I originally posted this in the Firmware forum as a follow on to another question, but thought it might help to put it out here under "Problems"...duh...so if you think you're reading this twice, you're probably right!

I have two nodes, a WRT54GS v1 and a WRT54G v3. I upgraded both from BBHN v1.0.0 to v1.1.2 using my home PC, and both of them come up on it and work just fine. However, the GS is used in my shack and is connected to a repurposed HP Compaq t5000 thin client running Windows CE .NET 4.2 as a dedicated terminal. With release 1.0.0 the GS and the t5000 worked together beautifully; now after the 1.1.2 upgrade, they won't talk to each other. But, if I connect the G to the thin client it works just fine on 1.1.2, so there's definitely something different in the GS that's keeping it from working exactly like the G, but I can't figure out what it is or if I can correct it in some way. I really would like to get this resolved; I want to take advantage of the extra memory in the GS to support applications, but maintain the direct access to it using the thin client.

There have been several of us finding issues with the latest upgrades, there is a ticket on the problem and we have been waiting to see 1.1.3 to show up in the downloads. Cameras and several specific type computer laptops don't see the updated nodes. There is coffee over against the wall in the Forum waiting area. :-) Bryant W7BDB

Hi Bryant, If this is keeping you from implementing a production mesh for a served agency, then please contact me off list and we'll come up with a suitable work around. Otherwise we appreciate your patience. We are all volunteers with paid jobs, families, and other priorities. Perhaps you would volunteer to help us with coding, testing, our some of the administrative work. Andre, K6AH

Andre Absolutely not a problem, its local group of us just getting active and setting up some gear. I'm sure I speak for many, we appreciate all your efforts and the efforts of the others that making this mode available to the amateur radio family. As far as being a help when it comes to networking and coding I'm almost clueless. If there is other opportunities to help, and something I can do within my skill level please let me know. Again, the effort you guys have put into this are really appreciated and amazing. 73 Bryant W7BDB

Perhaps a similar problem: I have a WRT54GS (CGN1) that I upgraded to 1.1.2 - successfully. After the upgrade, it could not see a DLink webcam I had attached. The webcam works as expected on other MESH (non-GS) nodes. The WRT54GS will not show a lease for the webcam but will _occasionally_ show a lease for a PC connected to the same LAN port (i.e., the PC _always_ successfully connects but a lease is not always displayed). I have reloaded the latest firmware to the GS. No change. Also, if it helps, the DLink webcam indicates that it has a connection. Unfortunately, this is the only GS node I have - all the others are Gs - otherwise I could test to see if the problem was possibly unique to the GS models... If this is a between the headphones type problem, please be gentle. WB5BKL

It's a known problem with most Linksys routers. See the bug report at http://ubnt.hsmm-mesh.org/products/BBHN/ticket/55. Solution is to use an Ethernet switch that supports VLANs. Andre. K6AH

If the solution is to use a switch that supports VLANs... I've collected a big box of off-model Linksys routers, WRT-54G versions 6, 8, WRT-300, -160, etc. They won't run BBHN, but I've successfully loaded DD-WRT on all of 'em. I usually use these for AP's attached to a node with pass-through DHCP. I believe they support VLAN tagging. My ratio of non-BBHN to BBHN routers is about 3 to 1, so this is an attractive work-around. I've been holding back from upgrading to 1.2 because of this bug. Do you think DD-WRT will do the job?

If the only solution right now is to add a separate switch to connect peripheral devices or to directly access the node for maintenance, then you're adding more hardware and increasing the power requirements for each node. While that probably isn't an issue in a ham shack or other building, it could be a problem if you're trying to deploy a node in the field in a weatherproof box running off the grid (i.e. battery pack/solar panels). I think I'll just wait patiently and see if the developers come up with a better solution. :)

At the moment the simple better solution is to go with Ubiquiti gear with those concerns mentioned.

I personally would not recommend using Linksys as part of an EMCOM deployment for numerous reasons including Power draw, Operating Condition support (temp and moisture), Performance of the hardware (cpu speed and packet forward ability), Performance of the RF Hardware (stronger RF output, no loss installation, higher quality receiver)

I've already seen multiple networks do full rip and replace on older generation Linksys gear to Ubiquiti as early as the 1.0.1 release.

A fix is in the repo but its holding because we are working much bigger tickets right now but if you have access to the backend and an unaffected device you can change it manually if need be, all details are in the code repo (note: we do not have the resources to walk users through this procedure at this time)

While UBNT is the preferred option... If you are deferring this cost, an alternative quick-and-dirty workaround, if you or a friend know ssh and vi, is to edit the /etc/config/network file and separate the ports to be in a unique vlan 0, 1, or 2 for your needs. This defect occurs when mixing vlans on same port--a desirable feature to plug any cable in any port. In my case, I had a UBNT AirCam that was completely ignored. I edited the file this way to get it working:

config switch eth0

    option vlan0 "2 3 4 5*"

    option vlan1 "0 5"

    option vlan2 "1t 5t "

vlan2 = DtD = port 1 (which may be port 4 label on the back depending on version)

vlan1 = WAN stays the same

vlan0 = LAN ports with the Aircam.

If you are not running this on a production (served agency) network a beta release of version 3.0.0 has been posted to the Software Downloads section of the website under "Experimental Builds".

3.0.0 uses a V3 protocol so it will not link with older networks.  It is believed to resolve a number of issues (including devices not working off a Linksys router)  however as a beta build it has not been fully tested so unknown issues may exist in it so if you have a few nodes you use for testing you may want to install it with those.
