On January 21, Volusia ARES will hold its monthly meeting at 3:00 p.m. at the Tiger Bay Fire Training Center.  The Central Florida D-Star Group will hold a workshop on D-Star Radio Communications.  The presentation on D-Star radio, DVAP, Dongle and D-RATS programming will be followed by separate sessions for Q & A and hands-on assistance to any ham needing help with their D-Star hardware. All hams are invited to attend.  For more information, please see the attached document.JAN-21-AGENDA http://volusiaares.org/

One hour prior to the meeting at 2:00, we're going to play around with HSMM-MESH nodes. We'll be playing with two HSMM-MESH nodes running with a webserver, a D-RATS Ratflector and FocusPhone P2P video chat.

All are welcome. Bring any WiFi capable device and you can play on the test MESH.

Volusia County Fire Training Center. 3889 Tiger Bay Rd., Daytona Beach, FL 32124

Talk in is 147.240 T123. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Any WiFi device? How about smartphones? Is there any security to keep non-hams out? Saturday's VolARES should be interesting between the HHMM-MESH demo and D-Star workshop. One wonders if there will be a connection between the D-Star system and the mesh net with D-RATS as the intermediary. I'll have a few questions to ask Saturday. 73, Frank KB4T

Hi, Frank, For the demo\test, we're using a closed network set up just for the demo. Ordinarily, only HSMM-MESH devices can connect to an HSMM-MESH node but for demo purposes, I'm hooking a open WiFi WAP to our 2 node test network. If your device can do WiFi with a browser, you can connect via one MESH node to a second one running a web browser. D-RATS software will run on the MESH and I'll also have a D-RATS Ratflector running on the demo MESH network. Looking forward to seeing you there and I'll bring your membership badge. 73 Mark KV4I

Frank, I posted a response to your D-RATS question in this forum at http://hsmm-mesh.org/index.php?option=com_ccboard&view=postlist&forum=15&topic=122&Itemid=67 It seems we'll likely have more discussion on this so I posted it as a new topic. Thanks, Mark KV4I

Mark, You just answered a question that I had today ... whether D-Rats would work over HSMM-Mesh (yes! ... good to know!). Can you make available your Hardware and Software setups and configurations so that I can duplicate it here in Atlanta? Thanks! Jerome WD4CWG

Jerome, I installed D-RATS (which includes the D-RATS Repeater AKA RatFlector) on my computer and started the RatFlector which uses port 9000. The only configuration I needed to do was to name the RatFlector, MESH-RAT On my HSSM-MESH node KV4I-100, I established a DHCP reservation for my RatFlector PC and advertised the service. I installed D-RATS on a second computer and configured the radio port to "net:172.27.0.106:9000", the address for my first computer. After both computers were connected to my MESH-NODE, KV4I-100, I was able to connect to the RatFlector MESH-RAT via the node. Saturday, I plan to test the connection from a second MESH node. We've already used D-RATS as an email gateway to forward to the Internet, emails received via RF and originated from a station without Internet access. I like the idea of testing D-RATS on the Mesh as D-RATS can interface with multiple transport mechanisms at the same time. It also provides real-time chat, file transfers, includes a Winlink 2000 telnet client and an Internet email client. 73 Mark KV4I

What would really be interesting is having the RAT-Flector running on the mesh hardware, but that would require a native Broadcom port of D-RATS, which doesn't exist. :(

N8OHU, You've got me at a disadvantage. I know that D-RATS runs on Linux. I've got it running on a Pentium 266MHz 128 MB pc on Puppy Linux and I see from http://www.d-rats.com/releases/ that there are APT, RPM and YUM installs. However, I'm not familiar with the requirements for running applications on a MESH router. 73 Mark KV4I

This afternoon we spent some time learning a bit more about HSMM-MESH. Marty W9OV flashed a WRT54GL creating a second node for our tests. Tim, K4KWQ also acquired a WRT54GL and is planning to flash that one too. KV4I-100 advertised services appeared on W9OV-100 and computers connected to the LAN ports on W9OV-100 were able to access the webserver on a laptop connected to KV4I-100. I learned the hard way something I should have learned by reading the HSMM-MESH.org website. "Your "target IP" will ALWAYS be the WLAN IP of the node that the target is connected to." I didn't have time to test D-RATs or FocusPhone from one node to another but I've had success so far in access the RatFlector on the KV4I-100 node by telling D-RATs on local node connected PCs to look for a RatFlector at KV4I-100:9000. I'm hoping that this will also work when accessed from a second node. Having fun and learning more. 73 Mark KV4I

Mike, Success with connecting my remote nodes wirelessly using D-Rats. I was able to use all the functions ( chat, file transfer, radiograms, etc.) of D-Rats. Thanks for your tips! 73, Jerome WD4CWG

Hi, Jerome. Do you mean Mark or Mike? I'm glad you got everything working. I'm looking forward to testing Focus VideoPhone next. It's free point to point video chat software from http://focusmedia.ru/prod_phone_en.htm Last night I found it uses TCP over port 4500 so it should be easy to set up port forwarding. 73 Mark KV4I

Sorry, Mark, thanks for all your help. I used port 8100 for the IP Cam, based on the instructions. Let me know how it works, I may try that next.

We haven't discussed that in Volusia yet, but I understand the Texas folks have done some work on that.
