I've tried this and I'm getting questions about changing the RF channel from 1 to something else in the amateur band. I'm sure this has come up before but I was not able to find any clear answers.

When I attempted the change the channel using the web interface my wifi software tells me that it's still on channel 1 even though the interface indicates something else.

You are likely hitting this issue that is noted in the release notes.

ALL Linksys WRT54G series devices (regardless of BBHN version) have a flaw in the on board RF module. This hardware module is closed source and not accessible to BBHN Developers.

Linksys nodes will hop from their assigned channel if they detect another node present running with the same SSID on a different channels at startup.

We we have also heard of it happening on roaming nodes so it may happen other times than just startup.

It is one of the many reasons I recomend Ubiquiti over Linksys

Hey Jesse, You can use channels 1 through 6 in 2.4 GHz band... although channels 1 and 6 are the only two non-overlapping channels in the ham band. Andre, K6AH

I made the change to channel 2 in web interface but it's not "sticking". The wifi scanner software I'm using says that all the units are still on channel 1. I'm looking at eBay now for Ubiquiti units. TNX ES 73e DE WB2IFS/3

The only way I've been able to do it with Linksys devices is to do them all at the same time. Which can be a tricky thing... you can't have any node running on channel 1 or they'll all go there. So you have to shut them all down and start changing them one at a time. Andre, K6AH

Got it. I've been able to do it in my own lab environment: But it's a pain in the butt.

  1. turn them all off.
  2. power on one router
  3. on the setup page, change the channel, save, and reboot the router
  4. power the router down again
  5. Repeat 2-4 for each radio in the mesh.
  6. Turn them all back on again!

WiFi Radar confirms that they are all on the same, new channel.
