I'm preparing to add POE to my Mesh node so I looked at HSMM-MESH.org to learn what HSMM-MESH standards, if any, were in place for POE.


Please forgive me if this has already been covered. I could not find any information at HSMM-MESH.org regarding any POE standards. Are there any?


It seems to me that 802.3af mode B (using the spare wires for DC) might be appropriate since the WRT54Gx family seems to be limited to 100BaseT.

POE is an IEEE standard. It is outlined in 802.3af-2003 and 802.3at-2009. Long story short it uses the 2 unused data pairs to transmit power using a single cable.

Hi, inuyasha Yes, I understand that POE is described in 802.3af and from what I've read there are two modes, A and B. Mode A delivers power on the data pairs (Phantom power) and mode B delivers on the 2 unused pairs. I was wondering if there was an HSMM-MESH standard specifying either A or B. Thanks, Mark KV4I

I've never heard of it referenced as mode "A" or mode "B" but I would imagine that's limited to which mode your hardware supports. Most consumer hardware isn't compatible with POE but I simply sliced a power adapter onto the unused pairs in a cat5. Its not a "true to spec" POE implementation but it works, and all of my "tech savvy" friends know how to hook it up at first sight.

TIA568B is the common standard used everywhere. I have yet to see anyone using TIA 568A in 25 years of IT. So your blue and brown pairs.
