On 1/24/12, Marty, W9OV and I used Focus VideoPhone (free from http://focusmedia.ru/prod_phone_en.htm) to conduct a Video Chat between two HSMM-MESH nodes.

Focus Video Phone is real time point to point video chat software. Unlike Skype, Focus Video Phone does not require a server or the Internet, only two points reachable over a network.

We installed Focus VideoPhone on one laptop connected to a LAN port on KV4I-100 and on one laptop connected to a LAN port on W9OV-100. On each MESH node, we enabled port forwarding for the WiFi interface using TCP on port 4500 (Outside port and LAN port) for the laptop IP address where we installed the Focus VideoPhone. No services were advertised.

We added the address W90V-100 to VideoPhone Address book on the computer connected to KV4I-100 and added KV4I-100 to the Address book on the computer connected to W9OV-100. We made video chat connections without any problems.

Along the way we discovered that computers connected to MESH nodes with port forwarding on port 4500 could not call computers connected to nodes that didn't have port forwarding enabled for port 4500.

However, computers connected to nodes which included port forwarding on port 4500 could receive calls from and communicate with nodes that did not have port 4500 forwarding enabled. After we enabled port forwarding on both nodes, each computer could initiate calls.

Hey Mark, This is great, I can't wait to try it out. I don't understand or know how to enable port forward, or using TCP. But I am sure someone will help me out along the way. 73 Mark KC9TYA

Hi, Mark. Glad you liked Focus Video Phone. This web site includes instructions for port forwarding at http://hsmm-mesh.org/documentation/70-how-to-use-the-web-interface.html#ports 73 Mark KV4I

Hi Mark, I am new to HSMM-MESH. I have six routers with the firmware installed but I cannot get Focus VideoPhone or D-RATS to connect to the computers. The setup for Focus Video Phone seemed very clear but when I call the other computer, after several seconds I get a message that it cannot connect suggesting an error in the address. Any thoughts on what I should try? Thanks. Dave Riddle KD9AC Charleston, IL

I found my problem. Reinstaled Windows and everything OK.

Hi Mark; I am playing around with Focus Video Phone. I have set up two mesh nodes at this QTH that see each other well. I have my laptop on one node (WA8ZLK-003) and my desk top on the other node WA8ZLK-002. Both computers are running Windows 7. I have local video at both nodes but like KD9AC in a previous posting here I can't connect and after a few seconds I get an on screen message confirming this. Both routers are in 5 Host Direct mode. In the Focus Video phone address books I actually entered the Node Names (WA8ZLK-002 in the computer connected toWA8ZLK-003 and vice-versa) rather than their IP addresses. I like you did not advertise any services. What am I missing? Note: I am relatively new to this stuff even though I am an EE nearing retirement and have programmed computers and control system for a lot of years. I just haven't done a lot of networking from scratch. Thanks for any help in advance and 73 DE Andy WA8ZLK

Hi Andy, I just today upgraded my first two nodes to BBHN 1.0.0 and it looks like 5 host Direct Mode is very different from the old NAT approach I used in the previous MESH set up. So far, I've set up DRATS and it's working but I can't ping a PC on one node from a PC on the other node and I can't access the webserver on one node from the other node. I haven't tried Focus Phone yet. The bottom line is that I really don't know the answer to your problem. Hopefully, as I learn more about the new BBHN 5 Direct setup, I'll know the answer. In the meantime, you might want to try setting the LAN back to the Nat option in your Basic Setup menu. 73 Mark KV4I

Andy, I enabled pinging by running the command "netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable". I also resolved my web server access issue by shutting off the Windows firewall on the PC running the webserver. I'm not sure if I'll want to do that on an ongoing basis but at least now I know the problem. I'm told that with 5 Direct, it's as if each PC is in the DMZ. You may want to test with the firewall shut off. I'll try to install FocusPhone next chance I get and we'll see what happens. 73 Mark KV4I

Andy,

This morning, I installed FocusPhone on a PC (Whitebox1) connected to KV4I-100 and then installed it on a PC (Whitebox2) connected to KV4I-200.

On Whitebox1, I entered "Whitebox2" in the "address book", clicked "connect" and immediately connected with no issues.

Perhaps, the following information may help you.

1) I installed and operated FocuPhone on Windows 7 using an account with Administrative rights.

2) I created a folder "c:\FocusPhone" and copied focusphone.exe into that folder

3) When Windows 7 firewall asked if I wanted to allow traffic through the firewall, I said yes.

If you still have a problem after duplicating these steps, let me know and I'll try to help.

Thanks Mark; I am still running the older HSMM-mesh firmware. Haven't attempted re-burning any of my nodes yet. Is the upgrade procedure the same as the original installation or is upgrading more of a patch like process. I haven't seen any instruction posted for the upgrade procedures, have you? Now back to Focus Phone: Both of my nodes were attached to browsers running in Windows 7 Mozilla Fire Fox to be exact. Both node were in 5 DIRECT mode. Should I have been in NAT? Focus phone is working I can see my own mug. You entered the actual node names into the Focus Phone address book correct? Not some related IP address. Focus phone here is running from the desktop on both machines rather than in an appropriate file on the C: drive. It doesn't appear that Focus phone modifies the Windows register ans so it should be portable. Windows 7 has not asked me whether or not I wanted to allow traffic through the wall. Does this happen when you initiate a video call? I appreciate you help on this Mark as I said I am an EE closer to retirement than to the beginning of my carreer but I don't have a lot of experience with Web, networking. Awaiting your reply. Thanks for your help so far. 73 de Andy WA8ZLK

Hi Andy. Here's the link to the upgrade instructions. http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/documentation/68-firmware-installation-instructions.html Yes, FocusPhone is "portable". There is no requirement for any specific file folder location and no registry entries. I didn't realize that the old firmware offered 5 direct host mode. I also don't know if the 5 direct host set up in the old firmware works the same as 5 direct host does in the new firmware. When I first used FocusPhone, my old firmware HSMM-MESH nodes were set for "NAT" and I used the port forwarding set up described in my 1/24/2012 post (eight posts up the list from this one.) If you're going to use the old firmware, try the setup in the 1/24/12 post using NAT and port forwarding. If you decide to upgrade to the BBHN 1.0.0 firmware, try the steps in my 1/5/2014 post (two up from this one.) Good luck, Mark KV4I

Hi Mark: Still no luck. Turned off firewalls at both the laptop connected to WA8ZLK-003 and the desktop connected to WA8ZLK-002. Set both mesh nodes to NAT mode and rebooted. Got new DHCP leases at both ends and reconnected each machine to their http:/localnode:8080 Both nodes see each other well they should they're only 20 ft apart. I can log on to either node from either computer so the mesh appears to be working AOK. Port forwarding rules at both nodes look like this: Interface = WiFi ~ Type = TCP ~ Outside Port = 4500 ~ Lan IP = Localnode, LAN port = 4500 At WA8ZLK-003 The focus Phone Address Book Entry looks like this: Name = Andy-2 ~ Address = WA8ZLK-002 ~ Info = blank or empty At WA8ZLK- 002 it looks like this: Name = Andy-3 ~ Address = WA8ZLK-003 ~ Info = blank or empty After a few seconds I get a cannot connect message with suggesting of wrong address. I have not enabled pinging per your reply of 1-5-14 "netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable". Where is this to be run? In Windows or on a mesh-node? Thanks again in advance for you help Mark. 73 De Andy WA8ZLK

Hi again Mark; This is a follow on to my post from minutes ago. Forgot one thing. Instructions for use of the Focus phone say that the connection is made when the receiving end acknowledges the call. I haven't been running between them but if WA8ZLK-003 is calling WA8ZLK-002 does WA8ZLK -002 have to answer the call? I've been sitting on my duff waiting for a call ...haven't visited the called node to see what things look like at the called end of the hook-up.

Mark,

thanks for the extra hits to the website ! :-) Saw the blurb in the E-letter this morning. Congrats and I wish you the best of luck when dealing with bureaucrats ! I get my hand at it tomorrow...lol

Ill be trying out the Focus thing soon, probably after the Big Bend 50K this weekend (we will have live streaming video from the middle of BB National Park on the front page starting either Friday or Saturday, and Ill be "the man behind the curtain").

It looks very interesting, and especially being a stand-alone app.
