I realize that the XW platform code is being worked on, but I am now stuck with two Nanostation M5 radios that I cannot use for BBHN. OpenWRT now has support for the XW platform version, so presumably the development work is done, and this is a packaging job? How soon are we likely to see a beta of a version supporting XW?
Thanks for any input - I don't really want to go down the road of installing OpenWRT plus all the other support needed for BBHM. Ted VE3TRQ Waterloo, Ontario

Good evening, I have been working on bootstrapping hamnet in my community for several weeks now. We are now engaged in purchasing and testing equipment and so I recently acquired this hardware from Ubiquiti: - RocketM5
- Sector Antenna
- NanostationM5
I was up to a good start with a flawless installation of the broadband-hamnet firmware on the RocketM5 equipment but the NanostationM5 (with the XW.v5.5.9 firmware) is giving me trouble with a message saying "Firmware image check failed. Error code: -6". The project is great and I thank you very much for the time you guys are putting into it. I am hitting what seems like a massive roadblock though and I too wonder if it would be possible to get an idea of when there might be support for the XW flashing. I would be happy to contribute too if you can point me to the most recent source code on git, svn or anywhere. Regards, Marc VA2MVC Montreal, QC, Canada

Can't speak to BBHN, but, this may be of interest:

Note, the NSM5 XW has an internal switch unlike the other NSMx devices, which have 2 physical ports off the cpu. What this translates to is good and bad... The good, it's the only XW hardware that is working in the openwrt community of users right now (probably due to this switch). The bad, well not so bad, just a little twist. The switch also has issues in that it can't do dual vlan tags and untagged packets on the same port. Consequently, be sure to use the ports configured for the following function only:
main: LAN devices
secondary: DtDlink or WAN (still may require 802.1q switch, won't work if connected to most home networks)
This means you can co-locate the device at a station dtdlink'd to another node-band, plug in an ipCam/lan device, and you don't need an external network hub.

No ETA. I've been working on XW support as well as other mesh-related programming things, and balancing that with research and my thesis. |

Thanks for the replies guys it is much appreciated! Do you know some of the key differences between the Broadband-Hamnet and the AREDN project? Do you know if nodes provisioned with either firmware are interoperable? I have seen people successfully connect AREDN nodes to a Broadband-Hamnet Mesh by changing the SSID to BroadbandHamnet but do you have first hand experience? sorry, Marc, I thought I replied yesterday... the system may have glitched.
I know from first hand experience, that you can change your SSID to AREDN (or anything else, for that matter), and they will interoperate. As long as the bandwidth settings, channel number, SSID, and version numbers (ie. V3), are the same.
Hope this helps. |

Will there ever be a way to use the secondary port without the 802.1q switch? I have a nanostation m2 and I can confirm the secondary port still ignores untagged traffic. |

Hi all Does anyone have any information on the firmware for the XW firmware? I'm relatively new to this but have enjoyed playing around with linksys routers but when I finally got my hands on a nano station it had XW firmware. I didn't realize that a lot of this information is several years old. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

The XW hardware is pretty well supported by the AREDN nightly builds now. They're pretty stable: https://www.arednmesh.org/content/nightly-builds |
