I want to welcome everyone to the River City Meshers. This is where we can talk and plan the Mesh network between Evansville In and Henderson Ky, and any others in the area. We are already off to a good start here! 73 Jim KC4BQK

Tested yesterday at St. Mary's Hospital parking garage. Was there for over an hour.
Saw 8 wifi-sites. Could not see the Red Cross. I was using the Omni-Directional. |

Glad to hear about the testing. Did you have LOS to the Red Cross? |

Hi all
This morning I got permission to place a node on top of the Braun building in down town Evansville just off the river next to WEVV's studio. This is a 10 story building (11 with the penthouse) I had a meeting with John Bennett N4XI who is the Chief Engeneer there and he was able to get the ok from his higher up's. We went up on the roof this morning and was able to see Reitz HS, Deaconess Hosp, The Health Dept. Also we did some checking on google earth and found that it looks like we may have a clear shot to the Read Cross so we may be able to connect thje two sites with Hi Gain Yagi's at each location. So it looks like this could be the corner stone of the net work here in Evansville.

Hey folks, Glad to see something going on with HSMM-Mesh in our area, even though we're a bit of distance apart. I'm involved with a very active ARES group here in Hardin County, and we're just beginning to look at the possibilities of meshed networks for emergency comms with and between some of our served agencies. I'm a network and Linux geek for a living, and have been using DD-WRT on a few routers for several years. Excited to know that the Ham community has jumped on this concept and is putting it to work! I have a couple test nodes set up to test with, and many others in our group are itching to get started and see how it can serve our ARES as well. Hope to have a quick "proof of concept" presentation to the whole group at our next meeting a week from tonight. I appreciate all the work that you guys and the rest of the folks here on the forum have done, and would love to have you guys the Henderson/Evansville group as a resource as far as finding out what works well and what may not work so great with implementing this. Take care, and keep up the good work! 73, Doug, K4EK

Doug,
I am a fellow long-time Linux guy.
Have you seen or tried rig control via HSMM-Mesh using a Linux app like flrig?
I have an emcomm app where such a setup for a Yaesu FT-450D would really be helpful.
WDYT?
Thanks! & 73, David KD4E |

Hey David,
Nope, I haven't tried the rig control yet, but definitely on the to-do list. Before now, my focus has been on UHF and below, but this has sure peaked my interest. A week or so ago I set up my first mesh network, and this evening I did a quick overview and demo for our ARES group. I set up a netbook with a camera server in my vehicle in the parking lot, connected to a node there. Another one in the building where we were meeting, and streamed the live video on a big screen. Tons of questions and thoughts for applications!
Another guy in the group brought in two more old WRT54Gs and we flashed them and had them up and meshing in a matter of minutes after the meeting. Several of the folks are excited about what we can do with the technology, and the fact that it's inexpensive and portable to set up stations is great. I frequently use fldigi (flawless on Linux), but haven't messed with flrig much. Very interested to know what you're doing with it. Thanks for the info
