Did you consider getting ther 2000mW product? It is just slightly more expensive and can do N speeds. If so, why did you decide to go with 1000mW? |

I have to admit I didn't properly research the possibilities before I pulled the trigger. I have an AWUS036NH arriving tomorrow. I'll try it then.
However, N will be useless until another N is nearby. I'll be very happy to detect any other node in my location, G or N.
We need a "backbone" of hams to have a 2watt node with a 12-15 dBi omnidirectional antenna on their rooftops. That way 10s of miles connections should be easily possible as long as they are line-of-sight. The less powerful 54Gs can then feed off the nearest backbone node. |

Tom,
I would love to see the configurations you are using for the Alfa and the Pi. There are some Ubiquity units here awaiting the new MESH firmware update, but twould be a good alternative.

I got a few units ubiquity stations waiting for firmware to. Based on the performance out of the Nanostation M2 and the lesser antenna on the nanostation loco m2 a "backbone" might be better suited to be a MIMO pair Nanostations. Whats the open open air range of a 12-15 dBi omnidirectional antenna, the Ive gotten excellent performance out the nanostation m2 that i installed on a roof top. Ive done some spectrum analizis of a WIMAX station located on campous and mapped the results in the red lines of the Gmap. wile dooing so ive noticed a lot of noise within the ISM band, this why await the ubiquity FW, in order to escape CH1 <-> CH 14. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=212143611967609195780.0004baed0aa2279d6128a&msa=0

David, so far I have tried two "distributions". One is by John GM8PBQ that copies files to the /root directory of the SD card right after you install the Raspbian "Wheezy" image (Debian for the Pi). This still needs some polish but it works. The second is by Scott KK6DCI and is cloned from a github. In worked initially, but now I seem to be having problems with the Alfa driver. More details are listed in posts on the Yahoo Amateur_Radio_Experimenters_Corner group. |

Got my AWUS036NH 2 watt unit and it is recognized immediately by KK6DCI's package (and probably by GM8PBQ's package but I haven't tested). I see my three Linksys nodes, but still waiting to detect a neighbor's signal! EDIT: flash my three Linksys routers to 1.0.0 bbhn. I'm looking foreword to KK6DCI updating his install to bbhn!

Tom, I plan to bring a node online in Averill Park in the near future. I will likely go with a Raspberry Pi as the platform. I'm wondering about the chances of establishing a link between our two locations. I am looking at some of the high gain antennas and 1-2W wireless adapters. At ~20mi, it might be a bit of a haul. Terrain may also come into play. I work in downtown Troy, and may be able to configure a node there as well. Perhaps you know of some closer nodes that aren't yet on the map.
Let me know your thoughts and experiences with BBHN so far, I'm interested to hear them. 73 Mike

Tom, Have you noticed the HSMM-MESH SSID 'going away' when using the AWUS036NH? I'm wondering if this is some power saving mode of the unit as there aren't any other mesh nodes for it to talk to at present. Restarting networking on the Pi (/etc/init.d/networking restart) seems to resolve the issue.
Maybe this issue will go away once I have another node online at home. Also: Have you had any luck configuring the kernel module to take advantage of the full 2W output?

All four of my nodes are operational on BroadbandHamnet-v1. Everything is running with OEM antennas and all units are on the 2nd floor of my house. However, I don't realistically expect to be able to receive a signal from the south of me, given the topology of my neighborhood. It's probably going to be a while before I can make any more investments to improve my situation at home, like a higher gain antenna outside. My AWUSO36NH node (AC2IE-N00) is broadcasting it's static position thanks to the new features in KK6DCI software. Mike, I haven't played around with the power yet.

This thread has done it. I can no longer not own a raspberry pi. Also shopping for high power usb wlan adapters it seems. |

Can you post a link or directions on installing/configuring BBHN on a RPi? I had it working a while ago with the old firmware. Sounds like you have it working with the new BBHN firmware v1.0. |
