Several hams in North Alabama are getting started with Broadband Hamnet. We requested this forum as much as anything to "be found" by the like minded...

Hi. This is Scott, N4JN. I found a reprogrammable WRT54G at a yard sale this past weekend and would love to start experimenting some. I'm down in south Huntsville and not exactly in a high spot so it may take some creativity for me to get involved. Hope to talk to you all soon.

John:

Hi! We are running a Google Group called hsv_bbhn.

Contact me at kv4pc (at) qsl (dot) net and I will make sure you get an invite.

We have so far only met once, but we do try to keep up with what everyone is doing.

P.S. These directions also apply to anyone else that stumbles onto this subforum. Go ahead and post a greeting here, but dont wait for a response before writing me to get invited to hsv_bbhn. It will save a little time.

Hi Bob. We are starting up a mesh group down here in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. I have created an "Alabama" forum on the AREDN website. So far, there are three of us hams who have mesh nodes up and running but none deployed at present. We're still playing with applications and learning how all this works. We have successfully set up a tunnel between two separate "mesh islands" and have used HamChat for keyboard to keyboard comms. Today, I should receive a couple VoIP phones that I ordered and will get that up and running on my local mesh. We are putting together demo nodes to take with us to club meetings and such in hope that we can get more hams interested in meshing. We are also presenting a demo to local E911 board and EOCs. We hope to soon get access to tall towers and robust sites where we can begin to deploy "backbone" mesh nodes and get this ball rolling in our area. Since HSV has been setting up mesh nodes for some time now, I'd be interested in your experience and any advice you might have for our newbie group just getting started. Thanks & 73, Ron N4RT Bromley, AL
