I have seen several references to VPN's on HSMM both here and elsewhere.  My question is, while it is technically feasible, and even with the right background trivial, is it strictly legal with our HAM licenses?  I was under the impression we were not able to encrypt communications, and I don't know how you get any more encrypted than on a VPN.

Any thoughts?

Technically it is possible to run a VPN on HSM-MESH(tm).  We can help with technical questions.

Only someone empowered to interpret and enforce the FCC rules could offer a definitive answer.  So people offering opinions with no legal standing, is of limited value.  Therefore we limit such discussions.  Please see  the message regarding legal issues on the home page of this web site.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Got it. No one wants a flame war. In other words, proceed at your own risk and understanding of the law, and leave others to do likewise.

I am not claiming to be an authority on the laws pertaining on all this, but with that said, tunneling on the MESH side would be subject to part 97 regulations, and the network side not... if you are using an internet connection via cable modem, DSL, ISDN etc... you can encrypt or tunnel the connection to the other node, that can be encrypted, but needs to be unencrypted on the RF side of that node as well... This is a non-issue with my solution. Please feel free to drop me an email and you will get detailed instructions on how to do.

At the same time I would like to try and establish tunneling between SM7 and anyone in the US. Are there anyone up for this ?

We are doing some really neat stuff on mesh, not just building a network without a use. We are actually running ATV and voice on our mesh. I will be starting a net soon. I will post my IP Address for those who may want to VPN into us. I have been told now how to do it. I have not tried it yet

Johan,

I sent you an email. Would be nice to see some of the mesh networks linked. Just not enough people interested in the local area. Unfortunately most around here are too busy talking about getting a D-Star repeater. I have a lead on some 900mhz radio's, I may try to find a way to bring a packet bridge to expand the network a bit.
