I did this exact thing a few days ago for a display table at Draper City Hall for the great shakeout. Interest was high, particularly with scout age kids. Some of their leaders kept asking, "but what would you do with it?" I don't think they get the fact that sometimes just seeing if you can do it is enough.
I believe that the RPi is made for Mesh applications. Their low power needs are perfect with a 12v router. A small cigarette lighter adapter, or some other small power supply for the RPi can allow the whole system to run for hours on just a 12v battery. Try that with your rack mount servers and see what it will cost you!

Question.... I was working on setting up TS at one point and we came across the issue that even with a non-profit licence it required internet in order to function.... this would defeat the purpose of using it in a disaster. |

So the I may be sure, is "TS" a TeamTalk Server?
Is "non-profit licence" meaning amateur radio licence?
In fact; the mesh is a kind of internet. Technacaly it is an intranet we are building; providing all of the functions and services that tcp/ip can manage. We regularly work TeamTalk without any commercial internet connection; relying only on the mesh to carry the traffic.
Instead of attempting load and load-up the limited resources directly on the node it's self by running TeamTalk directly from it, the RaspberryPi is providing the service as a server. It also allows other server functions from the RaspberryPi such as a Citadel Email server. Both work from a single RaspberryPi without connection to a commercial Internet connection; only utalizing the mesh as an intranet. For most people I call it a private internet that we are building.

Thanks for the heads up on TeamTalk! I had not heard of this one before, and I got the server loaded up on my Rpi tonight with two windows clients. I love how full featured but lightweight the clients are. The media streaming feature is especially cool.
I'm going to roll this one out for field day this weekend to the four nodes we'll have going, this will be fun.

TS in the circles i run stands for TeamSpeak. as in Teamspeak.com a voice chat software with built in file sharing. Multiple tabs so you can connect to different voice servers and you can run a server on one pc and have anyone else connect to it over the mesh. I've been using it for 10 years not while gaming. |

I currently use TeamSpeak in my personal testing, though TeamTalk's video capability is exciting.
Does anyone know if the TeamTalk server encrypts the communication? I encountered this issue with Mumble. TeamSpeak does not encrypt by default but also it does not have a Pi port.
Mumble encrypts by default and can not be unencrypted, however it has a Pi server.
What about TeamTalk? Encrypted or no? |
