Hello, All... I'm just getting started with HSMM-MESH. I have set up two nodes and on one set up IRC with the help of Rusty Haddock/AE5AE's instructions. The IRC chat server works great along with the nodes. I am able to open ports and make connections with windows share.
MY question is... is it possible to use the file transfer part of the IRC chat? I have ports 4990-5000 forwarded to the local host. I've spent a day here trying different preference setting with each computer on the network. No luck. I get notification that the file transfer is pending. I OK the transfer and the connection seems to time out.
Any suggestions? Thanks! Mike |

Hi Mike,
Yes, my neighbor KA5FZU and I have done file transfers via IRC (6.39MB in 56 seconds).
We both are using mIRC as the windoze client on each end.
And looking at my K5KTF-USB node where the ngircd is installed, I only have port 6667 opened to localnode on that node for IRC.
Give that a shot and see.

Thank you, Jim... I do have 6667 open as described above. I forgot to say that the first time. I tried having both computers on the same node via the LAN ports. I can transfer files this way. When I move the computer to a different node then it's a no go. Does each node need the IRC server? I'm missing something here.

No Mike, you only need 1 server, and both clients connect to it.
I would assume having both on one node would cause a problem because they woudl both use 6667, and one might jam up the other.
When you try and connect the one not on the server node, how do you initiate the connection? With me, I have an advertised service link that I just click (irc://k5ktf-ub:6667 in the services portion)and it opens mIRC and attempts to join the channel. If you are trying to connect by telling the client software directly, are you telling it the LAN IP or the Wireless IP? The 10.X.X.X WLAN is the one you should tell it. |

Hello, Jim... Thank you for the help. Yes, I've tried connecting with node name, node wifi IP, the "nodename".austin.tx.us.mesh... I am able to send the chat messages with no problems. However, nothing seems to work for the file transfer. I do have the port 6667 open on both nodes.(just to be sure) I can ping the node names, wifi IP's, and full names without a problem. I am using pidgin and xchat with same results. File transfer only work when the two computers are on the node with the IRC server installed. Once I move to the two separate nodes, I can chat fine but file transfer does not work. Port scan shows the port 6667 is open on both. Have a nice night! Mike

I'm still having problems with the file transfer section of IRC. I'm stuck and looking for some additional advice. Here is my debug log... I am using pidgin.

Thank you all for the help! I think I've solved the problem with the file transfers. I was trying to only use two nodes with one being the IRC server. I believe that was the problem with the point to point IRC file transfer. I've added an additional node to the mesh and that seem to have solved the issue. As long as I do not connect a computer to the IRC server node the file transfers work fine.

(Edited) Mike, were you ever able to make this function on the same node? It seems your experience implies n+1 nodes are needed, which is important to know in advance. Mesh is great but not so easy for non-IT administrators to actually use for all the subtleties and assumed knowledge the layman lacks.

Please help me understand, I am an IRC noobe. I have installed IRC on one of my mesh nodes and chat is working fine, but when I try to do a file transfer using /DCC SEND , all I get is "DCC Unknown command".
Is there some other way to do file transfers with IRC?
I am using leafChat as a client. |

Sounds like a client problem. When the client is given the command /DCC {whatever},
this is a command to the client program for it to issue the appropriate IRC protocol
commands to the server. Keep in mind that each client has it's own "peculiarities"
with regards to the /commands is understands and the options & their order.
Make sure you're "talking" to your client and not the server.
Some clients just don't like to talk to each other. :-\

OK, with leafChat the command is /dccsend nick
A slight variance with the "standard" syntax.
This command will bring up a file requester to select
the file to transfer.
For some reason, in the Linux version of leafChat, the program
wants to have ports 50631-50639 open, possibly knocking holes
in the firewall. This is under the 'Connection' option. You might
want to open those up and directed to your PC for /dccsend to work. |

Make sure that when you get into mIRC that you check to make sure you can send/receive all types of DCC files. The default is to ignore certain types of files transfered. To check it, in mIRC go to: Tools/Options/DCC/Ignore To the right you'll see "Method" - make sure that is disabled and it will accept all types of file transfers. If it is "Accept only", you could be sending a file type that is rejected by this setting.
