Hi,


Is there a way to "broadcast" or "multicast" traffic over the mesh network?


An idea I had was to create a gateway between APRS and HMSS. However, as APRS are basically broadcast-messages, this would mean that you would need to be to flood network over the mesh network.


Is there a way to do this natively inside the MESH protocol (is it possible to encapsulate user data insite the OLSR messages themselves), or should we need to build an application like olsrd itself and run this independantly of the OLSR routing?

There is an addon to OLSR protocol to allow multicast. And I strongly believe we should make use of it as it will allow talking one-to-many, same way we are used to in radio. However it takes a lot of effort to set it up and I don't think we'll have that soon. On the other hand, you could do VPN (or tunneling) over HSMM. Just make sure your tunnel does not encrypt the traffic. Once you do, you can connect to all your APRS nodes on the mesh and have broadcasts inside the VPN.

Hi, Thx! Do you have any more information on the support for multicast over OLSR. RFC3626 only mentions it very briefly and only says it can be added to the protocol later. I don't know if setting up VPNs is needed here as actually defeats the actual goal of having an ad-hoc unstructured meshed network. As APRS is a service at a relative low bitrate, perhaps it would be an option to look for some kind of "flooding" service, where you just flood user-data to all OLSR-nodes, which then broadcast (or multicast) it on their local non-OLSR interfaces. I'll look into the RFC if there is anything in the protocol that makes this possible. 73 kristoff - ON1ARF

I have also only read the RFC about multicast over OLSR and I am not sure if it is already implemented in olsrd plugin.

I haven't been working with APRS myself, but AFAIK if you are running APRS on the router itself, it will happily broadcast and re-broadcast APRS messages into wireless segment. And if the neighbouring node is also running APRS, they will hear each other and start talking.

Solution with the tunnels I proposed yesterday is for the case when you must cross several HSMM-only hops to reach your APRS partner or if you don't want to run APRS daemon on the node itself.

BTW, I can see it useful to have APRS relay as a part of HSMM distro. Even if you don't do APRS yourself, having APRS on your node will let you relay someone else's information. And Kristoff if you are into APRS over HSMM, maybe you could package it into a HSMM-MESH compatible plugin so everyone could benefit?
