I have been having issues with some of my equipment in the HMMWV, namely the mesh node, switch, DVR, etc.  THe radios are no problem, because they were designed for a mobile application, and their power supplies take that into account.


However, the WRT54G and other network electronics, although powered by 12v, are not expecting the voltage swings present in an automotive environment, ie. huge voltage drop during starting, and voltage peak up to 14v when driving, various other small drops during normal use.


After searching for a solution, and not wanting to spend $300 to filter my power, I found THIS.

It's a 12vdc voltage regulator that should fit the bill perfectly.  and only $65.  I will probably install it tomorrow, as it came this afternoon.   Hopefully it will fix my issues.

What I use is one of the Belkin 12v power supplies but plug it into a cheap 12vdc-to-120VAC inverter. The Belkins can be had cheaply or for free and the inverter can be found at Fry's or similiar places for $20-30. It doesn't have to be a huge megawatt :) inverter. While the car is running the Belkin gets its battery charged. When the car is off the '54G runs off of the Belkin's 12v battery and it'll be good for about 12-hours or so depending on the condition of the Belkin's battery.

I thought about using an inverter, but since some of the equipment ?MESH and DVR are up 24/7 I didn't want the current draw of an inverter.

How about one of the cheap 12 volt dc to dc converters that tke up to 48vdc and put out 12vdc? I think that would smooth the power to the unit. The car should put out at least 12dc. Let me know if my thinking is right.
