I am looking at aWRT54G v4. It has "speed boost". I'm not sure what speed boost is and wonder if they are OK to use.

I think you are looking at a WRT54GS v4, not a WRT54G v4. In any event it will work fine with HSMM-MESH. SpeedBoost was an all software technique to send more data ONLY to other Linksys SpeedBoost systems. There was no special hardware used to implement SpeedBoost. -Glenn KD5MFW
