Hi all:

I am new to networking and mesh.  I flashed 2 wrt54G routers sucessfully.  When I type in the IP address, I get my N7FV-1 page and can view who is on the mesh, setup pages, wireless scan ect.  What I cannot do is click on somebody (N7FV-2) in the mesh list and get into them.  I also cannot access the OLSR page.   I am using Windows 7 Home edition.   I have tried Google Chrome and Firefox both to no avail.   This is a new problem, I was able to access both right after I flashed the routers.  I Have tried connecting to both routers and used different cables also.  The fact that I get the same problem on both routers leads me to believe it is a PC/Browser issue.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

N7FV

Try http://NODENAME.austin.tx.us.mesh:8080 See if adding the fully qualified domain name (the .austin.tx.us.mesh) helps. Put the full nodename-ssid at NODENAME

If THAT works, then:

go into network settings, find your NIC adapter, right click-- properties.

scroll down to TCP/IP networking, again, go into its properties

go to Advanced settings, DNS tab

There should be a radio button that says Append these DNS suffixes (in order). Click it, then add "austin.tx.us.mesh" (without quotes), and then OK all the way out and try again with just NODENAME:8080.

I tried the K5KTF suggestion but to no avail. On the Mesh Status page, if I use their IP addresses, I can connect to stations under Current Neighbors but when clicking on the blue underlined links under Current Neighbors, I get the "Server Not Found" blurb. I am using 0.4.3 and Firefox on an XP-pro Service Pack 3 box. This is also true when clicking on OLSR Status button. I had to specify an IP address:1978 in Firefox. Just clicking on the button, again, gives me the "Server Not Found" blurb. What am I doing wrong? Help! Thanks es 73, Boyd Prestwood, K5YKG

OK, if access by IP works, but the names do not, then that means that SOMETHING is not letting the DNS work properly.

If it ALSO will not respond to NODENAME.austin.tx.us.mesh, then DNS is really not working.

Go into your PC's network settings, the Local Area Connection properties, IPv4 properties, and make the FIRST DNS SERVER entry 172.27.0.1 (or node's LAN IP), and move any regular internet DNS servers to secondary/tertiary (may have to click the ADVANCED tab to add more).

If you are both on the mesh AND on the internet, this will NOT affect internet access. It just forces the PC to check the node DNS first, which for regular stuff will fail and fallover to the secondary/tertiary and continue on.

Try that and let me know what happens.

Thank you Jim. That worked like a charm. The navigating like you indicated wasn't exact, but I did find my way though it all and make the changes you indicated. I tested all the links on the various Mesh Node pages and they all work! I have 4 nodes set up around the shack for testing. Now for some more fun! Thank you again es 73. Boyd K5YKG (near Houston)

Since your not that far away, come up to Summerfest Aug 2 & 3rd! We will have lots more toys and stuff. A workshop on Friday night 7-9pm, then 10-noon is mine and Glenn's presentations, and we will have stuff setup in the swapfest ballroom all day long.

Its only $8 to get in and that gets you a raffle ticket, advance reg gets you another ticket.

www.austinsummerfest.org (shameless plug... Im the webmaster for that too :-)  )

From what I hear, we might even have some guys selling a few spare nodes at cost (First come first snag!)

Thanks for this discussion. I set up my first mesh node tonight with no trouble using the step-by-step instructions; the only thing that didn't work right away was access via NODENAME:8080 although IPADDR:8080 did work. So I did a Google search for "hsmm dns not working" and found this topic, added the router's LAN IP address to my DNS list and now NODENAME:8080 works. Now to set up another node so they can find each other!
