I downloaded WRT54G V4 with no issue. It opens as a media audio file (VLC player). Should I save it as a different file type? Is it all done in an internet browser?

Do what is needed to keep the file name the same as it is on the web page. Some browsers insist on trying to change the name. The name of the file MUST be as it is on the web page to be properly accepted for down load into the router. All is done by making menu selections using a web browser. Down load the firmware file, go to the web page in the router, use the selection to update firmware. When it asks for what file to load into the router, point it at the HSMM-MESH firmware file you down loaded off the web page. It should be loaded into the router. Then do set up, all as described on the web page. -Glenn KD5MFW
