Hi -- I'm just starting to play with HamnetBroadband and was wondering what the structure is for assigning subnets to the LAN ports on a node.  I've configured two nodes so far (I"m planning to do five in all), and it seems there's some method of selecting the subnet, and I'm curious what that is.

Also, do I break anything (like interoperation with other nodes) if I use my own subnets for the LANs?  I already have a network plan mapped out in the 10.0.0.0 range that I use for all my other systems, and would prefer to use subnets in that space if it doesn't cause problems.  I'm aware of the possibility of address overlap which I can deal with if neccesary.

Thanks, 73, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Wont work... Trust me, been there.

My LAN used to be in the 10.27.X.X subnet.

It is now in the 192.168.X.X subnet BECAUSE the mesh WLAN IPs are in the 10.X.X.X and I couldnt route them with the gear that I had (commercial, not Cisco or higher-priced stuff).

To make my LAN talk to/be available from the mesh, I had to change my LAN to something other than 10.x.x.x (setting the gateway for 10.x.x.x was the hard part until I moved it all).

If you have Cisco/industrial gear that can be set to route properly, post it for others to use .

I'm guessing then that the radio-side routing uses a /8 netmask and routes the whole 10.0.0.0 network?  If so, that would certainly mess things up unless you use some magic that I don't know.

Thanks for the quick reply, and back to the drawing board for me!

yes, /8 it is. So I could not set a gateway node to forward only certain 10.x.x.x packets, as there could be nodes that would fall into the same subnet as my LAN was set to.

I went round and round for a few days/couple weeks off and on. Finally gave in and changed my whole LAN (about 15-20 units) to a different range.

But it is SO cool that I can be anywhere on my LAN, add the static route to the LAN device, and surf the mesh from it. I have helped a few others set this up and "go down the rabbit hole" as AD5OO calls it.:-)
