Ubiquiti M5 unit Question
Jim, any of the 5ghz hardware supported by firmware images will work. Problem is that manufacture's inventories are running out of the "XM" hardware that the available firmware supports. Chances are that most hardware you purchase will be the new "XW" hardware. Buying used 5ghz on ebay would increase the chance of firmware compatibility.
The NanoStation M5 XW has availability with beta images available over at www.aredn.org and would easily work for your needs--weighing in that beta images introduce some risk. (There's also ch -2 on 2.4ghz beta.)
The rest of the 5Ghz XW hardware will still take time to have firmware images available. The root cause is a hardware chip issue. The fix-workaround is in the linux kernel at the driver level to magically reset the the physical port (which locks up in hours).
Take a look in the "RACES/MOU News from around the county" section of this newsletter. We've been doing similar with video streams here in Orange County. We had 6 video streams feeding into the Orange County sheriff's mobile command center (think semi-tractor trailer with huge slide outs and a dozen HD screens). we had multiple video streams over both 5ghz and 2.4ghz links in a congested down town area--it works.

Welcome Mid-Michigan Meshers!
If your doing anything with mesh, (presentations, demonstrations, field exercises, etc.) in the Mid-Michigan area, we would love to hear about it. Even if your outside the Mid-Michigan area and want to get the word out about what your doing, please feel free to post about it here. Please add your nodes to the map, even if they are mobile/go-bag nodes or are not turned-on very often. This helps encourage people when they see a node relatively close to their location. If you would like to have someone talk to your club about Broadband-Hamnet, or want advice about giving a presentation, feel free to post that here as well. Please be aware the the less notice given, the less likely someone will be able to make a particular date. Better to ask first and set a date later. Good luck in your efforts and happy "meshing" Mike KE8AVJ |

Starting Mesh operations in Louisville Ky area
I would like to add my "vote" for a Louisville area sub group!
As KM8ICE noted, I run a mobile node in my vehicle. I am a delivery driver with a route that consists of the downtown, River road, Highlands, Clifton, and St. Mathews areas.
As KM8ICE noted I am currently running a Raspberry Pi B running HSMM-PI. I made a post in the HSMM-PI G+ group (which seems to be the most active source for HSMM-PI information) documenting my testing setup. I've changed a little since the post, but it represents my current setup well. Here is a link to the post: https://plus.google.com/+JoshuaBurton/posts/DCH1yzxzdg1
I also have a WRT54-G v3 and an Ubiquity M2 Bullet for Broadband Hamnet usage. --KM4DKF |

Ubiquiti M5 unit Question
All, I need to set up a link between a IP camera surveillance trailer's router back to a Mobile Command Vehicle's Laptop computer using 5 gig, as 2.4 will be over loaded at this event site. A 1/4 mile hop from one side of the event to the Mobile Command Vehicle. I can set things up to get a clear shot from point A to B. Looking for information on what Ubiquit 5 gig equipment that someone has experience in using for a link. This event occurs in less than 2 weeks so I need to get the correct equipment ordered ASAP the first time. Also want to be able to change the firmware to Broadband-Hamnet. Regards, Jim Duram, K8COP Muskegon County Sheriff EMD

Starting Mesh operations in Louisville Ky area
Sorry to resurrect an old post (and for my first ever post here, as well!), but I agree there should be a Louisville area sub group.
I just recently got a 2.4 node running in the Highlands of Louisville (near the intersection of Baxter and Broadway). I'm running a M2 on my third floor balcony, with a 19dB omni antenna (Hamfest find!). I've also got a M5 running and DtD linked to a WRT for 2.4 and 5.8 linking.
As of right now the only service I'm running (experimenting with) is ShoutCast Video which seems to be working well, at least between my own nodes.
Don't quite have the right antenna setup for the WRT and M5 yet (running a couple arbitrarily directed panel antennas at the moment) but the M2 is out there just waiting for a neighbor!
A buddy of mine, KM4DKF is working on a mobile 2.4 node since he is always driving around the downtown area. He's been running HSMM-Pi, but recently acquired an M2 and a 17dB omni (from the same guy at Hamfest) and is working on getting that beast mounted on the car :)
Figured it would be good to have a Louisville area group for anyone else in the area that is interested in trying to get some links up.
Added my nodes to the Google Map but they aren't showing up yet, but they are at the same location as my APRS digi: http://aprs.fi/#!mt=roadmap&z=11&call=a%2FKM8ICE-10

Router connect failure
Thanks everybody. Problem solved. Basically my bad. Not having used wired connections for a while, I forgot that I had set all my wired adapters to default to Google DNS. After I let them get DNS automatically, my connection problem disappeared! Sometimes you get so deep in the woods you can't see the trees!
Thanks again for the replies.

Bob I am guessing that you have followed the firmware installation instructions found at http://bbhn.org/documentation/68-firmware-installation-instructions.html. They are a little dated but the process for flashing a WRT has not changed since they were written. It sounds like you have flashed and setup your node but now cant get into it. I will throw out a couple ideas and see if these may help. Once the node is flashed you will need to use an Ethernet cable to connect to the node. WIFI access will require a separate access point. The cable connects between one of the four lan ports and the Ethernet port on your computer. You computer Ethernet port should be configured at this point to use DHCP for obtaining the IP Address and the Name server. The node is configured to be a DHCP server. On a windows computer in a command window you can run ipconfig to determine if your IP address. It should be somewhere in 10.x.x.x. I suspect you have a static address configured and this is what is causing your problems. Simply unplugging and reconnecting your Ethernet cable should give you a new IP address and reset the network. My computer takes a while to "identify the network" when I plug in to node that does not have internet access. Make sure you give your computer time to settle in on the network. Hopefully this will get you going. Clint, AE5CA

Router connect failure
I am just getting started with BBHN. I have a WRT54gs. I could not get anything to work, so I reflashed with bbhn-3.1.0-wrt54gs-2.4-squashfs.bin. That was the latest I could find. I was never able to use localnode:8080, and had to connect initally using 172.27.0.1:8080. That does not work now.
After entering the call sign and password, I got a page that basically said K4DJG is rebooting and I need to get new DHCP Lease and reconnect. I used ipconfig/renew which was all I knew to use. The two links on the re-booting page do not work, and I am not able to re-connect to the router. I have re-flashed the router twice using TFTP. What do I do now?

Did you get a GS as well so that you can tunnel? Or just the G models? |

How To Configure Mesh Nodes for N1MM and N3FJP Video
Thank you W4GHV for the quick response to my question. Sorry for the delay in responding the laptops are at the EOC and not easy to get to. I'm using two nodes and trying and trying to set up a N3FJP FD network. I tried setting up the static address on the laptop for the database. I set up the other the laptops, as you suggested using both Wi-Fi and wired connections. If I connected the laptops directly into the router then they were assigned IP addresses and worked. Laptops wired to the other node would not work. Wi-Fi does not appear to be issuing IP address. I hope someone has any other ideas. Again W4GHV thank you for your help. |

I just ordered 4 wrt54g v2.2's off ebay. I'm in an apartment with no ability to do HF, satellites or most anything else I'm interested in. I have a short range iGate running as well as an echolink proxy (both on raspberry pi) so I figured I'd try my hand at HSMM-MESH as well.

Yep, I conquered it! I set the logging computer with a FIXED address on the router.
Then on the other computers I set up the file share using the IP address and then it worked fine.
Kinda cool, but took tons of time for this slow learner. 73, W4GHV |
