From a cost perspective, an airplane may not be practical, but yet a fun experiment. I'd give it a try once or twice. Local 100LL is over $7/gal here. A 3 hour flight to support an incident @ ~8GPH in a c172 is ~$170 not to mention maintenance costs. Just need to figure out how to mount something like a 2-channel 19dB flatpanel-sector antenna pointing straight down. Clamp on a strut with the hurricane certified antenna? I have a node at 2600' with the homes below ~800' in the area with a range out 20+ miles. Somewhat comparable to flying over an incident. Being straight overhead in a holding pattern would probably be better as most home users point their antennas straight up and donut propagate outward.

My experience is, yes. I found that a ch1 filter made a big difference--more so than adding an amp. However, before buying such devices, the ubiquiti hardware is same or lower cost and accomplishes the same thing. The linksys hardware is many years old and the receiver sensitivity and ability to deal in a congested environment, let's just say, have room for improvement. There are also the usual techniques: 1) directional antennas vs. omni receiving signals from everywhere 2) act as neighborhood freq coordinator and delicately ask neighbors to move up to ch 6 or above. (many iphone/android apps to track signals down.) Just in case, ch1 and ch3 have overlap of bandwidth. ch3 has overlap from ch1 up to ch7--bigger potential for competing signals/noise in the middle, where as ch1 has overlap from ch1 to ch5. Manufactor's default on ch1, 6, and 11 for clear separation.

...unless it is an experimental, which mine would be.

Topic : Cannot reset Linksys modem

I have two Linksys WRT54G3G V1.1 modems with the beta ver 3.0 firmware.

I set one of them to Mesh Access Point. However, although I can connect to router via wi-fi, I cannot access it on that mode or ethernet. Doing IPconfig shows that it has an address of 169.253.133.2 !

Pressing the reset button does nothing, have tried the 30/30/30 trick but that will not work, presumably because of the Mesh firmware..Help!

interesting idea. My guess is that the FAA and the FCC might be bigger problems than the physics involved. One word of advice --- do NOT attach the mesh node and other equipment to the aircraft in any way that might be construed as permanent. Doing so would require a Supplementary Type Certificate for the aircraft.

Topic : Ubiquiti M2 HP conversion from DD-WRT to HSMM Mesh

Thanks for the tips! After a while I noticed a SSID of something like "Mesh Node" became available. I figured it must be done but still said it was waiting (this was after more than an hour). I had a static IP of 192.168.1.22 so I wasn't sure if unplug/replug the eth would do anything. I tried pointing firefox to localhost:8080 but it didn't work so I reset my NIC to DHCP and I saw I got an address and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1. Pointing Firefox to 192.168.1.1:8080 got me the landing page. I got the default password from one of the videos available on the site and need to track down where I wrote it down... Thanks again and 73.

I'm certain it is done after 30 mins. Pull the network cable out of your pc, plug it back in, and go to localhost:8080

Thanks. That got me past the error message.

The page changed to "System - Flashing..." and "waiting for changes to be applied"

It's been like that for over 30 minutes.

How long should it take?

Try the non-FACTORY version of the firmware. The factory version is only if you are upgrading from the native Ubiquiti firmware

Topic : Ubiquiti M2 HP conversion from DD-WRT to HSMM Mesh

Hi, I'm new to HSMM-mesh and would like to flash my Ubiquiti Bullet M2 HP with the HSMM firmware.  The M2 currently has this installed:

"OpenWrt | OpenWrt Attitude Adjustment 12.09-beta2 | Load: 0.34 0.16 0.06

I downloaded:

"bbhn-3.0.0-f5a9861700111e3cbbb3ed41a430bf1b6b786bea-ar71xx-generic-ubnt-bullet-m-squashfs-factory"

and when I try to load the file I get this error:

"The uploaded image file does not contain a supported format. Make sure that you choose the generic image format for your platform."

It looks like DD-WRT doesn't like the HSMM image file format.

Any ideas how I can get the firmware on there?

Will a high noise level effect a stable connectivity and through put ? We are testing a small network in a high wifi user enviorment where we encounter the loss of stable contact and yoyo-ing of the % readability even over short distances. Does anybody have a solution to this situation?

We have found that by shifting from say channel 1 to channel 3 an increase of 2 bd was noticed in the signal to noise ratio..

can this be overcome by increasing the power, or does one make things worse? We are using the linksys wrt54gs.

Please do not revive old dead threads.  This one has been inactive for over 4 months.  Since that time new versions of software name come out and old data may no longer be relevant.

Hmmm . . .same problem . . .on one particular machine, an Acer Aspire One netbook, running WinXP, I can't connect to the router. Firefox says "redirecting to the status page," but just sits there, saying "connecting." Other machines, XP, and Win 8.1, seem to have no problem. I can ping the router, but no status page. Help?

Like it or not tunnels are a necessity for some connections and they need to be secure. vtun seems to be the way to go. so that is were I will start testing. It would be nice if it is eventually the tunnel functions were build into the GUI.

Topic : Why dosn't my web page service show up on other nodes?

so I have miniweb hosting a simple web page on a netbook connected to my W6JWP-104 node. I set up a service on the node to link to the web page and when I rebooted and checked it shows up on the W6JWP-104 mesh status page. And when I click on the link it goes to the web page. The problem is when I try a different computer connected to my W6JWP-101 node and go to the mesh status page the W6JWP-104 node show up but the web page doesn't show up as a service.

Arrrgh! It won't allow me to attach the screen shots!

Help!

Topic : Can't Connect to IRC Server

I finally figured out how to get it to work with Mirc. I had to add my irc server to the list of servers in Mirc. I still haven't gotten Hirc to work. Which is too bad, I liked that it was very small and easy to install.

Topic : Can't Connect to IRC Server

Just an update. After being unable to get Hirc or Mirc to work I tried ChatZilla and was able to get into the chat room on the node with the IRC server using irc://w6jwp-104:6667. I've been able to access the chat room from 3 different computers and nodes using ChatZilla. I still don't know why I can get in using Hirc or Mirc.
