The Symantec description indicates that a virus "may have been detected" and doesn't identify it further.  It goes on to say there may be no virus at all.

Mike - KQ9P put on a great talk about mesh nodes, and what they're looking at doing in Charlottesville.

I was also able to record it and I posted it to youtube.

hmmm?? I did a scan right after and it found nothing and verified my AV was up to date. Delete my post about the warning. I just ran a quick scan and found 2 low concern tracking cookies and they were removed. Mike

Hmm...That's interesting since my computer is pretty much locked down all the time and has always had a kernel wrapper to prevent stuff like that from happening.

As for where the picture was sourced...cloudfront is definitely not the location. This is the raw permalink to the meshlink picture: http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/components/com_ccboard/assets/uploads/15208_584496bea403de62b362fe58d6e0fa85.jpg

No cloudfront there. Your computer could have very well have been infected before you tried to open the picture.

Paul, Thanks for that information. It clears up my confusion. I should have thought to post a screen shot with my post. Dick

OK, that was a really dumb question, I just realized there is a note at the top of the download pages explaining the two.

The answer is:

FACTORY - flashing from inside AirOS or by TFTP
SYSUPGRADE - upgrade a unit already flashed as a mesh node

I'm confused about the difference in the Factory Image and Sys Upgrade versions of the firmware. If I have a brand new unit, still running UBNT software, it seems logical to do a Sys Upgrade, but then when would you use the Factory Image?

Please help with the difference between these two sets of binaries.

I was only on this site this morning ( Right NOW) I pulled up an attached picture and a virus tried to attach to my computer.

I opened the attachment meshlink.jpg from KF5JIM  . The picture was sourced from cloudfront.net

Virus : Trojan.ADH.2

Topic : Ubiquiti Bullet HP IRC server problems

When I packaged ngircd v20.2 for the WRT54G the post-install script basically does two edits on the default config file.

The first is to us the node's hostname as a server name within an IRC network, should you choose to connect multiple IRC servers. This is close to the beginning of the config file, in the [Global] section, of the form

        name = ae5ae-base2.mesh

This is NOT, nor should be confused with, a hostname for a WiFi or TCP/IP network -- it is strictly for IRC. **BUT** it is required.

The second edit is to insert the node's root password into the config file as the password for the IRC Operator login. This operator account is for managing the server, not individual channels (Channel Op). You should be able to read about these account in the manual Conrad pointed you to above. This edit is done in the first [Operator] section in the config file. The line will look like this:

        Password = AbraCadDabra

That's it.

I don't see how it would be any different from a repeater network.

Topic : Two antennas?

Thinking about my own question, it only makes sense that I would be connected to both neighbors, with the Linksys rapidly switching antennas to maintain that communication. After all, the dual-antenna configuration was designed to support multiple wi-fi devices communicating with one router.

[AA6FI 2014-06-05- 14:48:06]:

... will I be connected to both Node A and Node B, with the WRT54G rapidly switching to the appropriate antenna? Or will the WRT54G just lock into the antenna that gives me the stronger signal (e.g., the directional antenna pointed toward the farther node) and ignore the signal from the other neighbor, coming into the other antenna? That would be unfortunate, if the "losing" neighbor needs my node to connect to the mesh.

Suppose I have two neighboring nodes: Node A, several km away, and Node B, much closer but in a different direction. Now suppose I attach to one connector a parabolic antenna which can successfully communicate with Node A but not Node B, and attach to the other connector an omnidirectional, which can communicate with Node B but not Node A. In this scenario, will I be connected to both Node A and Node B, with the WRT54G rapidly switching to the appropriate antenna? Or will the WRT54G just lock into the antenna that gives me the stronger signal (e.g., the directional antenna pointed toward the farther node) and ignore the signal from the other neighbor, coming into the other antenna? That would be unfortunate, if the "losing" neighbor needs my node to connect to the mesh.

So, if I jump in my truck and get on the mesh with the right UBNT gear... I could be a 1x1 doing a 2x2 in my 4x4? Sorry Conrad... Just workin' on my post count ;-)

A slight correction

The using of two streams is specified in 802.11n and is not a Ubiquiti only feature,  it applies to all 802.11n devices that support data rates MCS8 and above.  This is often refered to as MIMO (multi in multi out). When using 1 stream it is 1x2 mimo (assuming 2 antennas) ,  when using 2 streams it is 2x2 mimo,  etc.  1x2 mimo is also known as "diversity"

TDMA (time division multiple access) is indeed used by Airmax as a proprietary addition to wifi to reduce collisions, this is not used by BBHN builds and has no direct relationship to the use of multiple streams.

[K6AH 2014-06-05- 06:00:08]:

Ubiquiti: Uses both antennas in an attempt to open two paths between compatible nodes.  This is how they implement their proprietary Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) airMAX protocol, using two 20MHz channels... one vertically polarized, the other horizontally polarized.  Check out the Rocket M for more info: http://www.ubnt.com/airmax#rocketm

I fixed it and I removed the 8080 to localnode entry. Everything's working well now. TNX es 73s de wb2ifs/3 e e

Why do some nodes appear as "Remote Nodes" while others are shown under "Current Neighbors?)  This morning another ham and I were working on some irc issues and his two nodes were showing under "Remote Nodes" and one of mine was showing under "Current Neighbors.)

Checking just now revealed that they are all showing under "Current Neihbors."  I'm curious to know why that happends.

Have you tried turning off your wifi connection?

Why have you assigned port 8080 to localnode? That's on by default in the firmware configuration. No need to have it twice.
