Northeastern Ohio Mesher
Good evening folks,
Nice to see an Ohio sub-forum here, even if it's not really for those of us in the northern part of the state. I'm trying to get some of the hams up here going on HSMM-Mesh, but at times I think cats would be easier to herd. :D Hopefully kr0siv will see this and respond, as he's one of the "cats" in question.

Assuming I make it to Dayton this time, I will probably have one or more of my nodes with me. |

OK, thanks, the initial information was confusing as to detachable antennas, memory available and so on. I just got two GLs from Amazon for $48 total, will be here by Monday. I hope to demonstrate that I can get a two to four node network running here on the desktop... |

Running a BBS on Raspberry PI
I have Asterisk running right now on my PI and got my phones all working on the network. My concern or question I guess is loading all these various programs onto the PI will it screw up my current set up with Asterisk or will it run all this stuff simultaneously? |

You CAN still buy WRT54G V4 and below from NewEgg, Amazon, even Craigslist. There are a ton of them still available in the world. They still work and I can see no shortage in the near future.
Last I checked, there is even a guy on Ebay selling them WITH OUR BBHN FW ALREADY LOADED. So they are STILL quite the usable and purchase-able piece of hardware. Once the SDWG gets the Ubiquiti FW done, currently in Beta test (no, they are not looking for any more help at this time), then UBNT hardware will be available. You could always follow others' posted instructions on building it on other hardware (Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone, etc). See Google for those instructions. KTF

I guess what I am asking is if there are routers that are currently in production that would be better choices than the WRT54 series (it isn't clear if these are still being produced). |

HSMM-MESH on Raspberry PI
I just got my Raspberry Pi ham net node up and inter-operating with my regular version 1 node. Some interesting things to note, if the node number is not in the same century as the others exp [n5ale-100 and n5ale-200 there is no connection given all other things are the same. Simple change to N5ale-101 and all works very well. I am using a Rosewill RNX-N150HG wireless adapter [not sure about the chipset], which seems quite stable. Yes I did have to change the SSID to see the other node but thats to be expected. I do have a question about other features, has anyone added a second wireless interface and configured it as an access point? Along that same line has anyone added a usb Ethernet adapter and confiured it for Wan support? I am in the Beaumont area of Texas and the small group here is planing on having a demonstration network setup for the Orange ham-fest in February. Some cameras, some push to talk voip applications [Team Talk ] have been successfully tested so far on regular nodes, but I want to add a Raspberry Pi node to the mix as well so of to work I go. So much to do. So much to do. Rich Hudgins N5ALE |

How we used HSMM-MESH™
Topic :
Airborne Nodes - Your thoughts?
My initial interest with HSMM radio is to provide a datalink from an aircraft to the ground, or to take a node (or nodes) up in an airplane to provide wide area broadband access in an emergency. I wonder if I could get any ideas from others about whether is is feasible and what any issues might be. What about using 5 GHz and ODFM where we don't have a power limitation? In a Civil Air Patrol (or other emergency service) type of mission it could be highly useful to be able to downlink images and video in real time - what kind of range might we sensibly be able to get? Your thoughts? John, N9CNM

New to HSMM-MESH - what hardware to start with and where to buy?
Hello all, I am new to HSMM having started yesterday. I want to go buy some routers and am confused as to which to buy and which will work. I think I want: 1) Works with the current BBHN firmware 2) Has detachable antennas 3) High power option and I need to know where to buy from. I see the list of supported hardware but do not know how to determine which has a detachable antenna. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks John, N9CNM |

Where to find firmware V0.4.3
Thanks Gentlemen for your input. Before I proceed further, I just wanted to clarify what I meant to say was that I was told the tunnel is unstable on V1.0.0 and not that V1.0.0 is unstable. Sorry, for that.
I've been using Johan's instructions on our downgraded V0.4.3. and finally got it working. I didn't 100% the first time around when I used V1.0.0, However, now that I have the tunnel running, I will upgrade back to V1.0.0. and see how that works out. I really don't want to use the older version so I'm glad to hear that it's been working fine on the latest. 73 de ron |

You can use Raspberry PI with HAMServerPI to create one local HamNET Server with following services for your local BBHN users: - WWW page use NGINX and CMS Get Simple - VoIP server with MUMBLE (multiplatform server and client) - Video streaming server with ICECAST (users use VLC Media Player and NSVCap tool) - SMTP/IMAP Server with Webmail interface and BBS system use CITADEL - Jabber Server use POROSODY for client multiplaform PIDGIN „Instant messaging” - DXCluster use DXSPider and web access - Local forum with MYBB
- APRS iGate with DVB-T stcik it is all working on small computer Raspberry PI Model B 512MB. You can see how working VIdeo QSO you can use VLC Media Player and connect to stream one with server: http://www.db0tv.de/live.m3u 73 Waldek SP2ONG

Dual interfaces
I have a Toughbook (W7Pro) mounted in the HMMWV that is setup like so:
WiFi to home network when at home, otherwise connected to Autonet mobile router(4G) Wired connection to the BBHN Node. BBHN Node is wired (WAN port) to the Autonet router and is enabled as a Gateway. If the Autonet router is off, and the mesh node has a link to the mesh, then internet traffic *should* route thru mesh out the mesh GW in the house. If mesh node has no internet connection, traffic should route thru wifi.
Seemed to work before, I could turn wifi off and traffic wd route thru wired, turn off wired/turn on Wifi and traffic would route that way. Just automagically switch depending on which interface is available. Now, IF I have both interfaces up, I get NO internet access. The network and sharing center shows one or the other interface WITH internet connectivity yet no internet traffic passes. (yet I can navigate the LAN between!!) If i disable one interface then internet works.
odd...............

Where to find firmware V0.4.3
I personally have rebuilt our old developer tunnel host here at my QTH, and it is WAY more stable than what it was on 0.4.3. The problem with 0.4.3 and tunneling was that the older OLSR did NOT like talking to multiple interfaces, and would crash every so often, requiring the watchdog to restart it. That was fixed in the OLSR included in 1.0.0. I have had our tunnel back up for about a month now, and it has yet to crash. We are using a different tunnel mechanism that what Johan is supplying info for. The GRE protocol is a bear to get to pass home routers, which most of us use here in the US, so we went back to our old scheme, which requires more flash and ram due to its bigger payload than SM7I's. I Myself and 2 others tried connecting using his info with little success, unless we out the nodes right out on the open internet (brrrr, gives me chills just thinking about it :-) )
We have a guy in the dev group that is sure he can recompile the original down to get rid of unneeded dependencies to let it fit onto regular WRT's, and I hope by the end of the year Ill have time to write up on its install. I have every version going back to 0.4.0 in my vault (I host the web site and do weekly backups :-) ). But I strongly suggest staying with 1.0.0. KTF

I read it in the VPN forum. If you know of anyone using V1.0.0. and IP tunneling with it, could you direct me to them? I would sure be interested in learning from them as well.
However, if someone would want to flash with the V0.4.3, like me, where would I find it. Is there a BBHN/HSMM firmware archive directory. I was a good boy so Sanata should be nice to me. Happy Holidays to everyone de ron |

If I may ask, where did you read that garbage of it being unstable? The NW-Mesh guys??? lol 1.0.0 is AS stable as 0.4.3 was, plus a few fixes added in. Whoever is spouting that crap, send over to me and Ill straighten them out :-) 73 and Merry Christmas! Jim K5KTF
