Topic : HSMM-MESH in Utah

I am up in Logan UT with AG1T, and will be working with him and others to get some things going in the Northern most part of the state. Steve KE7WAQ and I were able to get our mesh nodes up and running and talking to each other mode today. That was cool to see. Now working on supporting hardware to get them in the air.

I was one of those that attended and it was a great presentation. Thanks Gerald and Chuck. Today we were able to see some nodes talk to each other. Now making plans to get them in the air and see what we can do from there. Kevin N7RXE

Wow, beautiful! OK re. regs and bandwidth - what an awesome resource! I am looking for a WRT54GL and am trying to sort out the best antenna and amp for mobile. I've forwarded the Mesh info to some locals in Statesboro and Savannah to see if there is interest here. Thanks!

Topic : IP Cam over HSMM-Mesh

http://www.hsmm-mesh.org/applications-for-the-mesh/123-tower-cam-via-mesh.html

If you look at the bottom picture, I have done just that.
The top 2 pictures are of the setup, the 3rd picture is a recorded video of me spinning the rotor 360 degrees, and the 4th picture is LIVE from that camera (right now at 9:21pm CDT, it may be a bit dark, but watch the tower beacon off in the distance). You will probably have to allow the Java permissions for your browser, for it to show up.

As to your questions:
1: Part 97 Rulez.
2: 54MB on the bestest of connections, slower as the connection gets weaker
3: with such bandwidth, EmComm would have free space and could play alongside non-EmComm.

I can't tell for sure, but the pictures seem to show an RG-58 sized cable on that antenna. The loss of the cable may well nullify the gain of the antenna. While an amp would improve your transmit power, it won't improve the power of the mesh nodes transmitting back to you. If I'm deploying amps, I've always put amps on both sides of a link. -Brian/KY9K

What ports did you get it to work on?

Topic : IP Cam over HSMM-Mesh

Are you saying that within a HSMM-Mesh local system (node?) you could connect from one location and view your home IP camera?

What about if the HSMM-Mesh has a participant linked to the Internet - would it work - coming in wireless then out to the Internet?

So, if we can solve the backbone to interconnect HSMM-Mesh systems/nodes then we could in-theory have a nationwide wireless network?

Can someone address:

1.  Limits as to content?

2.  Limits as to bandwidth?

3. Emcomm priority access to HSMM-Mesh?

Never knew you could do this. Much easier than other tools. Do you know how accurate the data is? I seem to get different profiles from every site.

Topic : Amplifier Question

Would you recommend this antenna w/ mag mount for mobile use? http://www.amazon.com/Booster-OMNI-Directional-High-Gain-Screw-On-magnetic/dp/B0039ORBLK/ref=pd_cp_e_3 I did not see another one that came with a mag mount. I do have a mag mount with an N-connector, so I could use something with more gain that is larger and uses that type of connector. It will be on top of a rented van for the trip so it needs to be a tilt-over, or somewhat short, to avoid being damaged by hotel overhangs, branches, etc. Thanks!

We plan a trip that could take us through as many as 10 Mesh-equipped cities. The amp you listed is no longer available via Amazon (I'd actually prefer a different source). I spotted this b/g (not n) 2w model (half the power) for $99. http://www.amazon.com/Alfa-Outdoor-802-11b-Booster-Amplifier/dp/B002R1FXU2/ref=pd_sim_misc_1/177-6404116-6697846 Is that price about what one should expect? What are the minimum specs I should search for, please? Perhaps MCMelectronics or Electronic Goldmine or one of the other surplus houses might have something suitable? Thanks!

Would you consider any of these reasonably-equal Linux alternatives?

I do plan to further document the services that we had.  But it will be a while yet.  First off I need to put the services back on line.  Then I can do a write up.

Gerald, Sounds like an excellent presentation, demo, and I especially like the theme. I hope we can all see any slides or how-tos from the presentation soon. Any thoughts on how to coordinate phone numbering across large areas or in a DMATs environment? Brian/KY9K

Topic : Utah Ham Fest for the Rocky Mountain Division Conference

Last night, July 29, from 8:30 PM through 10:00 PM we enthralled twenty five to thirty amateur radio people at the Utah Ham Fest for the Rocky Mountain Division Conference; taking place at Ruby's Inn at the gateway to Bryce Canyon

In keeping with the conference theme "Continuing the Pioneer Spirit of Amateur Radio" Chuck Killian, WB6YOK and Gerald Hasty AD7QF explained and demonstrated HSMM-MESH as another tool in our box for extending the capabilities for Amateur Radio.  A short listing of the mesh services witnessed:

Telephone calls were made and received through ASTERISK, the open source telephony projects.

Video over IP.

A web page serving SPLAT!, terrestrial RF path analysis, optimized for mesh usage.

SquirrelMail, to provide web eMail services for nuts over the mesh.

Desktop VNC control from one machine to another, again through the mesh.

Audience access to the mesh through an in the room bridge.

New interest was definitely created through the presentation and this continues the success of HSMM-MESH's utilization as another tool in the amateur radio operator’s tool kit.

The "L" in WRT54GL stands for "Linux". When Linksys neutered the WRT54G (v5+) with half the RAM/Flash there was great uproar. The WRT54GL was released in response to that. I guess somebody at Cisco realized they could still sell boatloads of the WRT54GL to the various alternative firmware groups. WRT54GL = works without problems. It is the WRT54G and WRT54GS that you have to worry about. -Brian/KY9K
