Topic : K5KTF TOWERCAM VIA THE MESH

Is it possible, once one gets their node onto the mesh to see the k5ktf towercam live not via the web server, just to check the mesh latency? also is there a mesh speedtest function built in to the HSSM-MESH firmware.

Thanks

Zach

p.s. just put my first node on air last night, still haven't linked up with anything. I think I will try to find out where the SAMC node is and get a directional antenna and see if i can make it uphill to it.

Topic : Internet connectivity issue

I can ping the IP ok from a pc connected to the host or gateway node. I tried bypassing my WIFI router and connected the output of the Clear modem directly to the gateway. Still no luck at node 2. I'll try a different ISP tomorrow. Since my setup used to work, I don't think I have a configuration issue. And, since it worked yesterday on a different ISP, I don't think the IP addresses in the script are the issue. I'm still leaning towards Clear being the culprit. I'm hoping that any other users with Clear will chime in with their results. Have a great Memorial day weekend. Robert

might try pinging the addresses from one of your internet connected computers. If they ping ok I would look at the router your connecting the node to, if you are connecting the node to the internet connected router and not the modem its self. I just put the Wan port of the node on to the lan port of the internet connected router. And after changing the IP's everything seems to be working good. I am using a dedicated MESH computer and node to post this. :-) 73

Andrew, thanks for you prompt response. I was able to follow your directions and get the two new IP address subtituted for the first two Yahoo IPs in the script. I saved and exited and went back in and checked to make sure the saved o.k. which they did. I didn't change the text description that said "Yahoo" because I didn't see that it would matter. Unfortunately, I still don't get internet passed to Node 2 like I used to when using my home ISP, which is Clear. I won't be able to check it with a different ISP until tomorrow. So, I'm back to thinking there is an issue with Clear. Thanks again, Robert

[KC5PRG 2012-05-27- 05:27:32]:

Jim, I went try your suggestion and discovered I don't know to "SSH in". I found a ssh key in the admin section, but I don't what do from there. Is there a description on the site on how to do what you are suggesting? Thanks, Robert

Robert,
under the download area there is a file called putty that will be your SSH tool,  open the program and put in "localnode" and port 2222.  then read the article on setting up the IRC server found under "applications for the mesh"  it tells you some of what you will need to open the "vi" editor.  Then go find a webpage that list the "vi" commands.  to modify the setup of the node you will need to put the "vi" into insert mode to make any changes.  I found a good 'vi' page at www.cs.colostate.edu/helpdocs/vi.html

hope this helps.

Sorry for the delay responding. It works now after changing the node setup file. Thanks for the quick and accurate response. KC5PRG....I'm am using ATT U-Verse, but it was not working from the start. I wonder if one ISP is blocking ICMP traffic for one reason or another. Could always do a tracert too and see where the ping dies.

Jim, I'll give that a try as well, tomorrow I hope. I'm still not sure why it works for me on one ISP (Skybeam) and not another (Clear Wireless). Seems like it would fail on both. I used to run on Clear with no issues, but something has obviously change. Thanks again, and I'll post my results as soon as I can. Robert

Jim, That did the trick for me. Had to refresh myself with VI commands (again) since I had to tell it to go into insert mode. I put in the IP's you suggested along with the new Google IP and the ip's of my clubs website (w5elk.org) and Ham Radio Nation. Works fine now. And you were right I tried pinging all the IP's that were listed in the node-setup and none of them replied all timed out almost right away. As always Thanks for your help!!!! Andrew NT5LA

Steve, I've had a working setup for some time that has recently stopped passing internet. I believe I have narrowed to problem do the one ISP, which is Clear Wireless. My MESH setup works fine other ISP's, but when I switch to Clear, the internet fails to pass to the remote nodes. May I ask what ISP you are attempting to use? Thanks, Robert

Hi Steve,

Here is the issue:

In the firmware, when you check the GATEWAY box, the firmware then tries to ping a few DNS servers  out on the internet (google/yahoo/etc), and once it gets a reply, it tells the whole mesh "WE HAVE INTERNET THROUGH HERE !" . The problem is, for some reason not under our control, those IP's do not ping back anymore.

What we will be doing is setting some new IPs in the next release of the firmware (I dont have an ETA), two being the IPs of this website, 71.42.236.90 and 71.42.236.91 , because if those IP's are not working, I need to fix something ASAP (or my other paying clients will be calling.... eeek!).

You can add those 2 IP's to your gateway node, if you SSH in and edit '/usr/local/bin/node-setup' and replace the IPs in there with the 2 above. Then run the script and/or reboot. That should fix it. If it doesnt, reply back and we can diag some more. Sorry for making you the guinea pig :-)

Topic : Internet connectivity issue

Hi all,

I completely lost with the internet connectivity option. I have 2 wrt54gl routers. Node1 has the WAN port connected to my home network (192.168.1.x) which in turn is connected to the internet. Node2 is connected to my laptop via a lan port. The version of the firmware is 0.4.2. I tried to use the default settings on both nodes and simply clicking Mesh Gateway but I was unable to connect to the internet. So I tried the following settings Node1 "Mesh Type" . WIFI default settings. Lan settings: Mode NAT; ip 192.168.1.100; netmask 255.255.255.0; DHCP server is disabled. WAN: DHCP; DNS 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4.

NODE2:

WIFI default settings; LAN NAT 192.168.1.101; netmask 255.255.255.0; gateway: (blank or i tried 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.100) DHCP enabled; 200-250 WAN; Disabled; 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 or i node1's wifi address.

Any help would be appreciated

Lost,

Steve

I had the same problem. I use Clear wireless for my ISP... I'm wondering if they may have changed something on their network that might have caused the problem. KC5PRG

I do not understand what just did. I had a 3cx soft phone configured on two separate laptops and working fine on one mesh router. I then took one and plugged it into a second mesh router and without changing anything I could call from one to the other. I thought I would have to change some settings to make this happen. I did setup the port forwarding in both routers. I am looking for a logical explanation.

I am working on  it right now. I am working on the ports now. Did you open all those ports one by one for 3cx?

I have been playing with 3CX. It is very interesting. Anyone else playing VOIP?

I have been able to get Asterisk running behind a single node, but have not been able to get it running across the mesh using SIP. I have not tried IAX yet, but it is supposed to be able to traverse a NAT without all of the problems that you get with SIP. Are you running in DMZ mode on the node in front of Asterisk? I would definitely be interested in an offline conversation with you some time about how you got it working. You can email me at my callsign @ arrl.net.

SIP. I don;t know if it matters, are you having trouble with IAX? AFAIK it should all be transparent. It is bridging after all.

What protocol is the server using SIP or IAX/IAX2?

Thank you for the fast reply! I figured that transmission would be limited to what the routers can handle but I didn't know if the antenna or OSLR or firmware or something would also limit the bandwidth in some way. 54 Mb/s is more than enough for any IRC client or IM application that allows for direct file transfer. So the traffic shouldn't be encrypted? Interesting, I'll keep it in mind. I'm sure short or infrequent bursts won't catch any flak. I think that getting the entire hardware kit under $100 would be a great price point for home-users and under $50 would make building a mesh network in rural or third-world locations extremely attractive. Under $50 though is probably only doable with bulk purchasing, with a DIY antenna, or from super-cheap router purchases but achieving that would be an awesome selling point for the project. I'll definitely look into ways to keep the hardware cost low.
