Hello from an aspiring new user. I have a Linksys WRT54G V1 router and would like to install HSMM-Mesh.  I downloaded hsmm-mesh-0.4.2-wrt54g.bin.  I did a 30/30/30 reset then connected an CAT-5 cable to port 1. When I logged into the router firmware and went through the prompts to upgrade the firmware I got the message "Incorrect Image File".

I have tried this with several different machines running XP, Vista, Windows 7, Linux Mint 9, and a Mac.  I have used browsers including Chrome, Firefox, IETester, Netscape, and Safari.  I tried the recommended Linksys BIN, DD-WRT, and even a couple that weren't reccomended.  I even tried to do this over wireless.  I still get the same error message.  I've found limited information when I searched and followed the suggestions which basically said the issue was due to the browser or that I needed to update the Linksys firmware first.

I'm stumped and would greatly appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks, Michael N4MJR

Hi Michael,

I would go ahead and re-download the file from our site. It may have gotten corrumpted on the first download.

And double check you are getting the correct file: http://hsmm-mesh.org/download/firmware/hsmm-mesh-0.4.2-wrt54g.bin

Browser flavor shouldnt matter, as long as it can do the selection and upload, which is all of them.

Jim, Thank you for your reply.  I downloaded again (actually I had downloaded at least 5 times already, once for each OS).  No change, I still get the error message "Incorrect Image File".  Michael N4MJR

Couldn't you do an initial tftp install?  another thought, what if you installed the latest linksys firmware, rebooted, then tried it?

W5LMM, Thanks for your reply, I've tried the Linksys file and get the same error. I'm not familiar with TFTP, so I'll look into it. I did find something on the DD-WRT forum which mentioned plugging the router and computer into an ethernet hub and trying to flash. I'll give that a try and then look at TFTP if it doesn't work. Thanks again. Michael N4MJR

I tried TFTP2 as the router booted and just after, both failed.  I tried this: http://download.modem-help.co.uk/mfcs-L/LinkSys/WRT54G/Firmware/v3/r3-03-6/WRT54GV3.0-3.03.6-US-code.exe.php but it couldn't find the router.  I tried this http://www.dd-wrt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26776&sid=6345e03a438aa7a04a464413779408db but no luck. This is starting to look futile.

Thanks, Michael N4MJR

Depending upon the firmware presently in the router, you may be able to upgrade it if you change the firmware filename from xxx.bin to xxx.trx (that is, change the filename extension) and use the router's interface in the normal way to do the upgrade. There are some peculiarities in some of the CFEs and firmwares. This may not work either, but it's easy to try and has worked for me sometimes.
