Topic : Have need for custom LAN ip

All,

What I am trying to do is set up a Bullet M2HP such that I can specify the LAN IP rather than have the firmware do it for me.

I am integrating the thing into a comm van and I don't want to have to re-engineer the network.

I did try NAT mode which let's me do what I want in terms of the LAN IP but pretty well cripples everything else (show services, etc).

I do have a Cisco router and a Cisco Switch in the van but that really seems like overkill.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

BTW, the receiver in that Bullet M2 is hot!  Goodness.

So if I went with the rocket m2, I would then need antennas, and a poe solution.

The PoE solution has been talked about before, but what antennas are folks running with these?

I see some really nice, but pricey, sector antennas on Amazon.... or are people throwing an omni on these?

Topic : Raspberry Pi & HSMM Mesh

The Pi is still limited by its Graphics driver (I have the old 256mb model which makes it worse)

Using them as much as you might think as interactive systems is hard. I use mine mainly as remote console and a Command Line coding system. Even running Wireshark takes a long time on my node.

With a combination of a remote server and my node I do however do most of the Ubiquiti programing from a Pi.

Pi's are great, one just has to evaluate how you use them.  I bought mine hoping they would be more flexible, but for user interaction its not been so great (in my opinion). For the cost of a full pi setup with monitor, keyboard, mouse, sd card, etc, I would recommend grabbing a cheap laptop it is likely to perform better at similar cost  and more portable.

Pi's do however work great if you just need to play MPEG2 video using hardware accelerated playback and beat some of my large systems in this regard because of the GPU in the chip.

Pi's can make decent remote servers to host files (as long as you don't need super performance), store operations plans, host remote information, access some basic websites (JavaScript is a resource killer), be distribution systems, BBS servers, etc. (The biggest limitation is the Graphics support --- which I know is getting better but will take time)

So yep, love my Pi, but not as great as I had hopped --- Eventually ill make one into a repeater controller and data logger, etc.

Linksys gear is still made and sold as the WRT54GL (see Amazon) however for similar cost you can get Ubiquiti ( -30c to 75c OR -40c to 80c (depending upon model)  OUTDOOR rated as compared to Linksys  0 to 40c INDOOR only)

We are starting to see networks replace their Linksys nodes with Ubiquiti now that we have a working release.

The Ubiquiti gear has an up to 10dbm extra receive sensitivity and up to 10dbm extra transmit power meaning you can have another 20dbm across an RF link with Ubiquiti compared to Linksys.

I've heard of a story where 2 directional antennas were needed because the Linksys gear couldn't see an Omni at a remote site, replacing the remote side with a NanoStation it was able to connect reliably to the Omni because of its better receiver so the directional was re-purposed to work on a backbone uplink to another site.

Ubiquiti Hardware Samples:

http://www.ubnt.com/airmax#airMaxHardware

Some are meant to be put on an antenna (bullet and rocket) with no/very little feedline loss.  some even have an antenna built in (AirGrid and NanoStation) meaning you take a node put it on a pole, zero feedline loss, run a cat5 cable for power and internet, and you are setup.

All good points. I do not have any nodes up..but now have several wrtg54gs version 3 routers coming my way. Ubiquiti is less known to me, and the Linksys is now discontinued... so seeing a Pi pop up sounded interesting. Perhaps we should add to the profiles here a list of what hardware who has actually run... a pie chart of success makes newcomers easily gravitate to what works well. The other thing that got my interest: a pi running with 512 meg of Ram, a display, keyboard and mouse on a USB hub could also run as a local platform for things like a wordpress sight and a BBS. So for one box to deploy into a go box, it seems attractive, though I have not tried all this yet. Truely playing around with all of this will help with options. Seems if one was not going to use the pi, a chromebook might be a handy thing to consume the network that just got set up.

Got it fixed. The I had left the Ethernet cable plugged into the "internet" plug. The directions seemed to forget to tell you that you need to move it to the "port" plugs to access the node after you set it up. Thanks Bob

The Scarborough Amateur Radio Club is active in the HSMM-MESH, We currently have 5 members with active nodes and some that will be installed this spring 2014. We cover the East end of Toronto and Scarborough, Lake Ontario north to 401 and east to 401 and Hwy2. We also have a RasPBX VIOP system installed at one location. We are looking at other projects also including the installation of Ubiquiti NanoBridgeM2 equipment. The SARClub meets on the 2nd Monday of each month. www.ve3we.org "everyone is welcome"

Should help.  The part starting with "Go to network connections" but the guid as a whole should help you see the setup portion.

Please describe what you mean by disabling and re-enabling the interface. I am pretty computer savvy but not sure what you are talking about.

The page you are seeing is the confirmation screen. It sounds like your computer has not received a new IP address from the node. Try disabling and re-enabling the interface. You should have a 10.something IP address on your computer if you didn't make any other changes.

Very new to MESH. Just got the above router. Was following N7RXE youtube video and your instruction PDF when setting up the node.

Everything was going great. Uploaded the firmware. Installed the firmware. Got into the Node Setup section. Changed the name of the node to W8RID-One and entered the passwords. Hit Save Changes.

Here is where thing went south. I never got what I thought was a confirming screen that the changes were made.

A Screen came up with a bunch of stuff on it and these were the things I wrote down:

http://localnode.local.mesh:8080

or

http://W8RID-One.local.mesh:8080

At this point I was not sure what to do so I selected the http://localnode.local.mesh:8080

Could not access the address errors.

Tried the other one with same results. Even typed in the IP address per the video: 172.27.0.1
Same errors.

I can see the node on my laptop. The SSID="Broadbandhamnet-1" I did not change this in the setup area.

Last resort I reset the router/node. Tried all the above again with the same results.

What have I done wrong and can it be fixed?? If it can how do I do that??

I have been doing this all via Ethernet cable.

Thanks

For a mobile node for ARES I would recomend looking at the Ubiquiti gear. Pi's are great devices but USB based wifi cards are often limited in capability (power and options for installation) USB distance is max of 30m with repeaters every 5 meters. Take an ethernet cable on the other hand and without any repeaters you can go 100m distance from the wifi point (think about getting to RF outside the building, etc) You could use the pi and run a network cable like Ubiquiti Them we get into weather and voltage issues A Pi If installed outside would need weatherproofing. In addition a pi needs 5v of power at 500ma you would need a power supply with the node and a method to bring power. A Ubiquiti could actually be fed from your main setup area along the ethernet cable. Has a wide voltage range (12v battery direct is fine) Not to say not to experiment with Pi, just saying keep an eye on the other variables when thinking deployment and portable nodes.

Please do post results. It seems like this setup could be very useful.... especially as a mobile type node. It seems like putting kits together for ARES teams to deploy could be very useful.

Here's the output from a Nanostation M365.  I'm traveling for work but should be able to have rocket and a rocket titanium in the 365 variety in a couple of weeks.

board.sysid=0xe003
board.cpurevision=0x00000101
board.name=NanoStation M365
board.shortname=N36
board.subtype=
board.netmodes=7
board.hwaddr=00272284C602
board.reboot=30
board.upgrade=150
board.phycount=2
board.phy.1.maxmtu=2024
board.phy.2.maxmtu=2024
radio.1.name=
radio.1.shortname=
radio.1.bus=pci
radio.1.subsystemid=0xe003
radio.1.subvendorid=0x0777
radio.1.txpower.max=25
radio.1.txpower.offset=3
radio.1.antennas=1
radio.1.def_antenna=4
radio.1.antenna.1.id=4
radio.1.antenna.1.name=Combined
radio.1.antenna.1.gain=12

Is there any work being done on any of the 900MHz UBNT units?

Sorry about not replying sooner but been busy with school and work.

I operate at 10Ghz with only 250mw on voice and can get from Sterling State Park to Cleveland even on a bad day :) Granted, I use an old discarded DirecTV dish with a decent homemade feed.

But each band and mode is different in how it works for distance. At 2m, I can get down to the Southwest area of Pennsylvania with 50watts and a 4 element beam from the same location and just make it most days. At 2.4Ghz Wifi, we would have to work with a wide bandwidth signal, so the rf energy is spread out more than it would be for a voice or cw signal. We could be able to work 200 miles one day and the next hour not be able to get across the parking lot. Example(s): 6m and 10m

I think its worth testing out at least to see what could be done. I look at it this way, you won't know til you at least try. Theory is one thing, reality is totally different :)

Good day all!

Was wondering if it is possible to use these over a mesh network?

Make: ACN  IRIS Video phone

Model: WG4K

They have a WAN port, LAN port and a phone port and i can access settings for networking on both phones!

I picked these up at the local Goodwill and thought it would be a cool addition to the mesh network here.

I am new to all of this but have seen allot of smart people here and figured someone could guide me if this is even possible.

Thanks in advance!

You have the older style of bullets. It needs to be the "m" series

I just made an attempt to flash my recently purchased 'bullet 2hp'. After logging into the factory installed menu and attempting to flash with "bbhn-1.0.1-ar71xx-ubnt-bullet-m-squashfs-factory.bin", I get an error "Bad firmware update image"? I have downloaded the image a couple of times but there is no corrupted download that I can tell? How did I break it? Don KF5WSM
