Up and running... Now looking for people to tunnel with...
Many thanks to Bill for the tunnel connection, and to the developers who made tunneling possible! I'm working on an RF connection that will bring me into the local mesh network here in Las Vegas, but until then, I'm on one of those "RF islands". Awesome stuff!

HamChat.ipk
In order to make it MUCH more convenient to install Hamchat onto your node, I have created a .ipk file from Nicholia's original .zip file. No longer does one need to mess with the shell to create directories and files hoping that you haven't forgotten something. My .ipk is just like what would come from our respositories when you download a package on the Administration webpage on your node. To install: - Click on this link, http://www.bbhn.org/download/applications/hamchat_0.1_all.ipk , and download to your PC.
- Go to the Administration page on your node, click on [Choose File] in the PACKAGE MANAGEMENT section, and select the file you just downloaded.
- Click [Open] in the file selector window (hitting <RETURN> usually works too).
- The file name will appear next to the [Choose file] button.
- Press [Upload].
After the HamChat package has been installed the following message will appear on the webpage:
Installing hamchat (0.1) to root...
Configuring hamchat
hamchat has been installed.
For modifications see the file /www/hamchat/README
To use, browse to http://localnode:8080/cgi-bin/hamchat.pl
Have phun!
de AE5AE
Done.
Everything is installed per Nickolia's instructions and you're now ready to go. This same package should install and run on WRT54G's and Ubiquiti hardware alike but, due to a lacking of UBNT hardware I haven't tested it on such; only WRT54G's. Please let me know of any issues and I'll try to get them squared away. |

oops. Was just called to my attention... I didn't properly register your posting.
You are using 900Mhz.
sorry, the M900 is only available in the Loco version. My bad. |

Thanks James. I am an OTer, me and a fellow ham are attempting to start a mesh network. We chose 900 because we felt it had better propagation. We are approximately 3 miles apart (maybe not line of site - trees) but have been unable to establish a link. Where could we get some assistance? |

can't comment on that. I do know that the NS Loco M2 are rated 23dBm (around 200mW) The NS M2's are rated at 27dBm (around 500mW) (8db difference) And FWIW, from my reading...
WRT54G = 15 dBm = 32 mW WRT54GS = 18 dBm = 63 mW |

Since I see comments only on Linksys hardware, I want to ask if you have all the details regarding the upcoming Linksys End of Support (no new firmware images for Linksys) date (April 30th) and that there will not be any surprises for anyone just starting to get involved. http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/index.php?view=article&id=197:linksys-end-of-support

When: Wednesday, March 11, 2015 @ 7:30 PM Where: HacDC, St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church, 1525 Newton St NW, Washington, DC Need help getting started with HSMM-Mesh (http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/)? Want to find out about applications of HSMM-Mesh? Wanna find out if that old WRT54G router in the back of your closet can be reborn as a High Speed MultiMedia (hsmm-mesh) network node? Is your hsmm-mesh node lonely with no one to mesh with? (Awwwww) Have an extra node you want to sell/trade? http://www.meetup.com/hac-dc/events/219270026/ |

Bias to WiFi Scan
Honestly I have never seen that so don't know what to say of course I don't think I have looked that close now that you mention it.
All my scans seem to be pretty well distributed, or even better distributed away from the channel I am on. I suppose its possible though. I can say the data is gathered in two manners 1) A scan triggers a "Request all AP's send me their name" packet (hmm I just realized this actually might be a violation when used with high gain antennas and PtMP as it could be excessive power outside ham bands) (crud now I might have to write a new warning notice for the scan page)
2) It also to my knowledge passively listens for broadcasts from AP's saying "HERE I AM" This may be the reason you see the packets as a "HERE I AM" packet is more likely to been than the node's "Who is out there" packet+response as these would be seen by the kernel code even when not scanning I think.
The WIFI scan really shouldn't be used for a site survey. It is good for seeing quickly who is around but is far from scientific.
The AirOS Spectrum View utility might be a good tool when working with viewing sites. There is a feature in the new kernel that could use someone to write a program to take FFT data and generate similar graphs from inside BBHN build that might be nice in the future as well to give a good scan output but it needs someone to adopt it and take it under their wing to work on it.

Bias to WiFi Scan
In surveying local 2.4gHz activity I did a WiFi Scan with the radio (Rocket-M2) configured for channel 1. The result shows stations spread across the channels but the majority are on channel 1. Then, I set the Rocket to channel 6, re-booted and did another WiFi Scan. This time there was the same spread, but the majority of stations were now on channel 6. Switching to channel 11 produced similar results. So, my question... Is there a bias to the way the scan is conducted (iwinfo) that favors the currently selected channel? If so, is there a way to get an unbiased scan?

That makes sense. Perhaps someone with the right knowledge might revise the Setup Help page to clarify which changes can be "applied" and which require a save and reboot. The current wording implies that all changes in the Wi-Fi box can be applied.
