All fixed now. I had not exactly followed the instructions. :-( I had used my Linux experience to use the "passwd" command, instead of "setpasswd". The curious thing is that httpd.conf had "root/hsmm" in one, and "root/HSMM" in the other. Maybe whatever I did to the /etc/passwd file had stopped the hsmm system from working. John, KG4VHV: You do have to get into the safe mode. Power off; power on ; the power LED flickers, wait for the DMZ LED to come on then push the reset button in the back a few times.(Be ready to do this before you power up the WRT). The DMZ LED should pulse. Then set your PC IP address to 192.168.1.2, and Telnet (use Putty?) to connect to 192.168.1.1 . Type "setpasswd hsmm" and you are done. Power off; change your PC back to use DHCP on the WRT. 73, Graham

I'm eager to connect with anyone who has written a successful grant for a BBHN Implementation... from either a Public agency or Private company?

Topic : Connectors

I have a WRT54GL and a Bolo Brands N Wireless 18dbi High Gain Antenna.

Where can I obtain a connector-adaptor to connect the antenna to the router?

Thanks. ND9L

Just checking in.

I have just finished burning and testing my first MESH node using a wrt54gv2 router. Glad to see that there is a place to talk to interested locals.

I know you can't do much with one node, but I've got my eyes open for more hardware. I plan on using MESH in support of MARS ops and possibly as a gate to APRS.

With field day coming up, it might be a good opportunity to have one deployed as a demo.

Oh BTW. I was hoping to use the Mikrotik directly as is, as it does support MESH operation. However, their MESH implementation seems to be proprietary and not compatible with BroadbandHamnet?

Eric?

So as I understand it: 1. Flash the unit with OpenWrt 2. Install OLSRd I think that some clarification is needed from my part. I have several devices that are Mikrotik, but since it a software operating system, it also runs on other platforms. According to the openWrt website, the PC Engine hardware supports openWrt, and that is what I was going to use. It seems pretty straight forward. I assume there is nothing special in the BroadbandHamnet firmware other than the configuration? Eric

Topic : MESH node Antennas

I have 2 nodes ready to go into service.

They are the Linksys WRT54G dual antenna Nodes.

They came with the high gain antennas. (that is what is on them right now.)

I have ordered a vertical antenna and a directional Yagi.

Here is my question:

Can I leave one of the high gain verticals that came with it on and use the other antenna connection to feed both the Yagi and external vertical when I mount them to my outside tower?? (Just use a splitter on the tower)

Oops, I forgot to answer completely.  The BBHN source code is available.  I believe some of the device device drivers for some of the hardware is proprietary to the manufacturers.

Pay attention to what Conrad posted.

You're on your own for the install process.  It will take some configuration and installation.  Maybe even some coding and compilation.  Then you'll have a node that can talk to a BBHN mesh, but it won't have the user interface that BBHN has, unless you port that part of the code as well.

i.e. It won't be the full BBHN platform.

Most people won't have the skills to do the port themselves without a lot of learning.

There are lots of hardware platforms that CAN be made to talk to BBHN mesh, but you have to understand linux, networks, and software to figure out how to make it work.

There are also some hardware platforms that probably won't work because of different processors or hardware with proprietary device drivers that won't do what BBHN needs, such as ad hoc mode.

You could probably make it work. Flashing an operating system on MicroTik is actually fairly complicated compared to Ubiquiti hardware. Versatility and plug in modules may call for a re-write if the interface in some places as the GUI makes some assumptions about devices. If you wanted to experiment the basic instructions are: Flash OpenWrt Onto the device (made complicated by Microtik boot loader). This can't be made "easy" (as compared to Ubiquiti) so will always be an "Advanced Users" deployment. Install OLSRD (not do hard once you get this part) Configure OLSRD to match BBHN settings. This would get you a node that works on BBHN networks.

1). This actually sounds like it might be an issue more with the browser used and some of the html code and not the fact it is a titanium device.

The other option is there is a known bug in 1.0.1 if you hit apply on an unsupported device it Disables the RF until reboot.

2) 100% expected.  Ubiquiti devices have an RF amplifier chip on board.  It is like setting a ht at 5w with an amplifier. The radio thinks it is only putting out a low power but the amplifier is actually increasing the power and the radio doesn't know about it.  Same thing happens with Ubiquiti devices the software thinks the power is lower than it really is.  We have been programming this in when we make them "supported" devices.

Your device is likely putting out full power in this case.

1. could not mesh until in the setup screen i moved the text until the end of :broadbandhamnet-v1:  showed in the window and i saved it

2. power came up as 16db, when i change it to 27, apply and save it shows up as 27; however reboot or turn off and back on results in return to 16

thank you to the creators of this fun and useful software

Thanks, Jim. My next idea was to tftp the software again (with the [as yet still unknown, but expected difficulties]) of Window8.1, and not changing the paswrd. That still might not have worked; I seem to recall that it was compulsory to change the password. 73, Graham

Probably the fastest method would be to tftp the firmware back to the router:

You are probably not following the directions found here to the T. Instead of typing, "setpasswd abc", you will need to type, "cat /etc/httpd.conf".

Also, instead of waiting for the DMZ LED to illuminate before you hold the reset button to make the DMZ starts blinking, try a continual press-and-release of the reset button. I have found that the second method works more reliably than the first one mentioned.

I found out another problem, I changed the SSID to VE7SML-1 too. Can't get back into setup to change it back to BroadbandHamnet-v1. Any help would be much appreciated.

Topic : Can I share com port hube between nodes?

GOT IT!!!! All in the device drivers... Read the manual over and over and over till it sinks into that thick head. Seems that because it was running on this computer in mac mode i had to uninstall the driver software and reinstall then during configuration set up IP mode... So it wasnt a problem of the device working over different network branches, it was the driver configuration to make it cross branches... I may just get my head around this networking stuff after all. TNX KG6JEI for your input and also to those who viewed my post... Now I can use TNC's and any other serial devices across a BBHN-MESH... now were getting somewhere. NR1X

Still no joy... device has 10.69.94.154 assigned from DHCP at NR1X-2. Laptop I'm trying to access it from is 10.152.12.28 assigned from NR1X-1. PC connected to NR1X-2 (10.69.94.154) has no problem seeing the device. I'm not to clear on how it all works, but it seems that I would need to have 10.152.12.?? assigned from both nodes? or am I missing something? I will read over the device documentation again and again until I get it to work... I know it can be done.

I am a little loss as to why the Mikrotik Series of routers cannot be used?

Does the firmware on the routers have to be changed? If so, is the source code available?

Since the Mikrotik is such a versatile router series, and supports different frequency bands via plug-in wireless modules, it would seem an excellent choice?

I have several units and would be willing to do some experimentation.

Sounds easy enough. Exactly what am I logging into to reach this file? I am unable to put the router in SAFE MODE and unable to log into the router itself. Is there another way into the software? Thanks john
