Ok - can you give some hints on the configuration side. I left defaults on both WRT and PI and PI can see the IP of the WRT but when I click on it, it just times out. Recently changed the IP to the same 10.80.106.x subnet between the two - still same results. I also changed the Lan IP to 192. of the WRT - it defaulted to 10. which is not routeable - also checked the NAT function and that seems to have no effect on MESH as well. Again never have seen any Mesh reported on the WRT device - reflashed that to make sure too.
Sort of stuck - any thoughts?

Yes, I did indeed get it to work and all 3 routers, 2-WRT and the PI see each other. It took a little perseverance and trial and error, but once I got the right version of debian-pi installed it worked like a charm.

Did you ever get this to actually work? I did same and the PI can see the WRT node but can not (or does not) connect. On the WRT node side it does not detect the PI at all. Yes promising - just has a lan connect gateway for the mesh to have access to internet. Please post back with any suggestions on how to get PI on same mesh with WRT routers.

Dayton Hamvention Update
Instead of the Bullet on a mast I was initially planning, I will now have a WRT54 powered by a 4AH LiPo battery pack on top of the rental vehicle from flea market space 2833. We are flying and did not have the extra luggage space for a mast and mount. I will be up and running on Friday and Sat, of the Hamvention. Let's see if we can work some 2.4 GHz DX in the flea market!

Here is some inexpensive mesh networking hardware that might be interesting. They are working on a higher power version, also.

Hamilton
I have a WRT54-GS node operational on a rooftop near Rebecca and Ferguson in Hamilton. The noise level in the area is horrendous, so the node's in the middle of the roof, cutting out most of the ground level residential clutter. Height above ground is about 60'. Clear line of sight is difficult due to the taller buildings in the area, but there are several good lines from the escarpment. There are also several clear lines across the bay to Burlington, and I'd love some feedback if those lines work out.
Currently the active antenna is a 15db omni. There's a 24db mesh parabolic, in horizontal orientation, but it's gain was actually causing some grief. It's currently pointed at Sam Lawrence Park, link length about 2 km. Sometime in the next week or so, I'll turn it around and re-activate it towards Burlington.
I've had success linking with a stock WRT54 at Sam Lawrence park, with LQ better than 60%. The path between the two sites passes between two high-rise apartments, which are in the fresnel zone, and that causes some interesting affects. For example, from above, I can't tell the difference between horizontal and vertical polarization at the lower site, and there is very little difference in performance between the omni and the dish.
I"ve had much better success with a Nanostation. Link Quality with the NS is better than 80% both ways. It seems to get through the noise a lot better, despite it's greater sensitivity. Doing a 'wifi scan' from Sam Lawrence park, I was picking up 3 pages of AP's, more than a few operating on chan. 1.
The results I'm getting are consistent with the modelling I did using RadioMobile, with the exception of the effects caused by the buildings on either side of my path. The program generalizes built-up areas, and can't predict link viability for specific constructions. Good 'ol direct viewing with a pair of binoculars still works best.
If you're up on the Hamilton escarpment with a yagi, please give this a try, and leave a message on the built-in Hamchat message board. Please feel free to E-mail me with specific questions, or to schedule a test across a couple of nodes.

Thanks for the update Ian. The first node going up will be Fonthill VE3PLF-100 on a tower in Fonthill. That is scheduled for today, May 12, 2014 Port Weller will go up after Dayton so it will be somewhere around May 24, 2014 I suspect the people in Toronto should have a good shot at Fonthill as I can see Toronto from the Tower

New Node in Fremont - N3CKF-Mesh
Scott, KI6SEJ & I did a little war driving with his node today. We connected it to my node (N3CKF-Mesh-2a) and discovered that the "omni" range is actually not that long (basically i cover the condo complex i'm in and maybe the streets on either side) including a bit of Thornton Ave.
(this is omni-to-omni, if you have a directional antenna the range could be much longer).
We also wandered over to Terry, KW0RCA's place and messed around with his higly directional node as well. On the way back from doing that (after we pointed that node at the general Thornton Ave area, we could "hear" the node from the backyard of KI6SEJ's house (although with an omni antenna and a Linksys node, we couldnt quite get it to mesh. However, thats with the antenna at low elevation too. I loaned KI6SEJ an extra Bullet M2HP and Terry contributed a grid antenna so this may get worked on this week.
I think we might be able to "mesh" Fremont if we had a few people who lived up on the hill like Terry does and can push "lanes" of connectivity down to the flat-lands... I may get a directional as well and see if i can see Terry or Scott.

Hi Eric,
I have been in touch with some meshers in East York and Scarborough.
Let me know when you get the Port Weller node operational and I will ask them to aim their antennas toward it to check if they can see it.
I believe you know Arpad, va3vad, in East York, he can see the entrance to the Welland Canal from his balcony and has recently modified a dish antenna to 2.4 Ghz for use on mesh with a Linksys router.
You may also know Rod, ve3soy, who has a node to install in the next week or two on the edge of the Scarborough Bluffs, Warden and Kingston Roads.
I have mentioned to both of them that your node may be set up soon in Port Weller and they will try to see and or connect with it.
Cheers, Ian, va3igd, NPARC member also, ianvgg@gmail.com |

Meshing around in Wausau, WI
Yesterday KB9VBR, N9MEA, and I (W9HDG) played around with mesh nodes in Wausau WI. Our farthest successful link was 0.78 miles according to google earth. We almost had a 1.3 mile link to our first permanent node, but there were trees in the way (we could see it, occasionally we would get a brief link), and could see that same node 2.3 miles but just couldn't quite link up. The permanent node has a 16dbi Omni at 20' in the air. All the other antennas were home made.
You can see the pictures here:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/+TravisAugustine/albums/6011887173266604417
It was a good time and we look forward to playing mesh again soon.

New Node in Fremont - N3CKF-Mesh
So i have my node(s) installed and running. There are two: N3ckf-Mesh-1a = Ubiquiti Loco M2 - facing south west on the 2nd floor of my condo. You probably wont hear this node. N3ckf-Mesh-2a = Ubiquiti Bullet HP w/9db gain vertical omni antenna (HG-2409U) directly connected. This is in my attic (basically at the "3rd floor" level) and the attic roof is pretty transparent to RF. You *may* hear this one. (it hears about 80 other access points). N3ckf-Mesh-1a is on the map but they're both in the same location. My guess is you will need gain antennas to link to these (I dont "hear" any other nodes around). They're on 24x7 now. NOthing gatewayed to them yet. I'll be interested to see if i see anyone in the "previous neighbors" log especailly on the one in the attic which i believe is runnign legal limit power (36dbm with antenna gain factored in) Happy hunting! WRT54G-TM MMHC/SDHC Card Support
After a bit of exploration I have determined the instructions in "SDHC Instructions txt.zip" contain an error. Those instructions instruct users to copy the 'sdhc.o' and 'sdhcd.o' files into the '/etc/modules/2.4.34' directory on the WRT54G-TM unit.... when they should have gone into the '/lib/modules/2.4.34'. Once I relocated my files to the correct directory everything worked. I should have figured this out earlier as I had to create the '/etc/modules" and '/etc/modules/2.4.34' directories in order to follow the incorrect instruction, though I was not instructed to create these directories. I hope someone will correct the 'SDHC Instructions txt.zip' file. |

airgrid mhp and NanostationM2 Internet Gateway not working. ..
Thanks for your reply.. I figured out how to use two ports of my wrt54gl as vlan1 and vlan2. It works just fine. I used DD-WRT for this to work.
The router is acting as a smart switch providing internet to the nanostationm2 or airgridm2 setup as internet gateway. In case someone needs to use a spare wrt54gl as a managed switch, here is a simple setup: 1- do a hard reset. 2- go to SETUP-> VLANS
3- move the wan port to vlan 2 4- click apply.(wait 1 minute before continuing).
5- go to SETUP -> Networking page
6- change the "WAN Port Assignment" from "vlan1" to "vlan2". If there is no "vlan2", reboot the router and check again.
7- Press the apply button
8- go to SETUP -> VLANS
9- Move the desired ports from "vlan0" to "vlan1". I used ports 3 and 4 to provide vlans to ubiquiti routers. You can select two or one port to use as vlan, it is up to you. 10- Change Assigned to Bridge settings for vlan1 to LAN
11- Press the apply button and wait one minute before continuing. 12- go to SETUP -> Networking page and verify that the vlan1 interface is assigned to the br0
12- Click save and apply settings.
13- go to setup -> networking page and change "WAN port to Assignment " from "vlan1" to "vlan2" and press apply. 14- go to Administration -> commands and save the following script. nvram set wan_ifname=vlan2 startservice wan Wait two minutes and reboot the router... very important.
15 - go to SETUP -> VLANS 16- Scroll down to "Tagged" and select the ports you selected in step 9 as vlan1. For me I selected ports 3 and 4. 17- Press apply button and wait 2 minutes. After this I was able to assign ports 3 and 4 as vlans and ports 2 and 1 were still working as traditional LAN ports. I also tried the same setup by assigning just port 4 as vlan1 and the 3 other LAN ports were still working just fine. Port 4 provided internet to any Ubiquiti device with one or two LAN ports. Enjoy..
Credits to : DD-WRT tutorial on how to configure VLANS for 802.1q compability. web page: www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Reconfigure_VLANs_for_802.1q_Compability
that is it... now you can plug the nanostation, the bullet or the airgrid lan ethernet cable into port 3 or 4 and it will act as a vlan. Beware !!! I can ping my router ip from different nodes. I can access my router GUI from any node in my network.. I think this is a bit scary if you open your network to everybody in a given community network... Enjoy..
