He used to have his license back in the day when you had one year to upgrade from Novice, but he didnt, so it expired. I have sent him a link to the Sunnyvale VE group.

I sent him a link to this forum showing y'all were lighting things up out there, and he knows my (blonde) wife got hers last year, so HE should have no problems getting it again (shaming him into it :-) ) He just got and is playing around with a cheap SDR USB dongle (25-1700Mhz), so maybe it will help spark the bug.

If you look at the picture I attached to my last post, you can see the view (pic taken with my HTC phone i in panorama mode from his front porch, not even up on the roof). Milpitas to Alum Rock. I think I labeled the airport too far to the right though. If he were to put up a node or 2, I dont think he would have any problems linking into anyone (as long as they aim back). Next time I go out, (if he doesnt by then), Ill bring out one and a good ant to try again. Ill make sure to post here when I do so someone can try aiming up his way.

I just applied to the same yahoo group. Guess I will keep my fingers crossed and hope they accept me.

Sounds like your friend has an ideal location to set up a few nodes with directional antennas. I am doing the same thing on the other side of the valley and should have one up on a 21 foot mast with a directional antenna in a couple weeks.

If your friend is a ham you should talk him into setting up a few nodes and directional antennas up there and aim them down at the valley. If he is not a ham you should talk him into joining our ranks.

My buddy who I visit regularly, lives up on the hill above Berryessa, and with a good telescope, I can probably see all your antennas from his front porch Laughing

One time I was out there, about a year ago, I tried scanning the entire valley with a MFJ stamped yagi on a node, but with no one probably pointing up at us, I didnt see any other nodes.

Thanks Tyler! Yes thats the guts of a WRT54G in there.

I was looking at the ubiquity units as well. Another option is to add on a 2.4GHz RF amplifier between the antenna and router. There is a wide variety on amazon. I plan on getting a couple eventually.

We definitely need to work on spreading the word to more hams so we can get more nodes on the air in the bay area. If you happen to have any ham friends try talking them into it.

On another note, I installed a node in my car. That way I can try to track down unlisted nodes while I drive around town. I Haven't found any yet though.

I happened to be in your neck of the woods for work last week and decided to drive by and see if I could pick up your nodes signal. As luck would have it our nodes were able to connect. I thought you might be interested so I took a couple screen shots from my iPhone while our nodes were connected. The screen shots are attached to this message below.

Nice work James,  I presume that is a Wrt 54g in there?

I am tthinking I will have to buy a couple antennas to play around with my Wrt 54g more.  I figure an Omni and a directional would be enough for me to experiment and see if I can pick anyone up.  If I can then I'm thinking I might get one of the ubiquiti units...

I'm guessing we'll need a lot more nodes to get anything remotely connected well...

KG6JEI would be a better source of answers than I. However, just to clarify my statement: "it seems to be so" meant it seems to be so for a future release.
(I replied with a more detailed answer, but it didn't post and I lost my detailed answer, so the one you see is a shortened version of the original post)

Here are a few photos of the progress I have made with one of my nodes. This one will be installed on a 21 foot fiberglass mast that will be in my side yard in a week or two. It has a 8.5db gain omni antenna as well as a 16db gain directional antenna. I will be able to rotate it from the base of the pole to aim it in different directions. I will run an AC power cord up the center of the hollow fiberglass mast and the power supply for the node will be installed in the waterproof box. The box has been painted white to reduce heat build up internally. I also plan to install a DC input port on the box so the node can switch from grid power to solar/battery power.

If anyone has any suggestions or questions feel free to post.

Topic : Ubiquiti Picostation support?

Jim is close,

The table listed is NOT the list of supported devices (though it does show some of the support)

Currently the picostation M2 is NOT supported. Only the ones in BLUE are supported.

http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/hsmm-mesh-forums/view-postlist/forum-37-ubnt-firmware/topic-759-help-us-gather-info-on-ubnt-devices.html?start=20#ccbp3575

Shows we have been provided a copy of the board.info file (we need this to get some info about the device)

What this means is now that we have the file we will try and get it into a future release. We are looking to get as many of the M5's as we can into the next release (and the picostation would also hopefully make it into the release)

Two things have to come into play for it to be officially supported now that we have the board.info

1) We implement the changes needed to make the device work.

2) Users confirm it work during an alpha release, otherwise if we don't have confirmation it works we will decide what to do at that time (to release as unsupported but having a higher chance at working, or not to include at all)

Why both the steps?

Well the main reason is when we say it works, were standing behind it and expect it to work, we don't want to tell everyone it works only to find out it does not.

Would I have liked to see support out for M5 and Picostation by now?  Yes, but its taken a little longer than expected to get all the information.

Keep an eye on the site for news on new releases.  I am intending to release several times this year with new bands and devices and new features.

Make sure to ask the Seller to be sure,

To my knowledge they did not actually make a low power version of the M2  and all M2's are M2HP. However make sure with the seller.

Make sure it is an M series. (the older NON-M series [b2 and b2hp] are NOT supported)

The photo should show a M2 on a black background on the front if its an M series

From looking at this post, http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/hsmm-mesh-forums/view-postlist/forum-37-ubnt-firmware/topic-759-help-us-gather-info-on-ubnt-devices.html#ccbp3485, it seems to be so. And, from looking at the datasheet, it looks like it meets the basic memory requirements (http://dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/picostationm/picom2hp_DS.pdf)

Does anyone know if all Bullet M2 units are M2HP? the Ubiquiti literature seems to use the names interchangeably. Someone has some used M2 with POE's on ebay right now. Dave ke6bid

I'm more familiar with the Ubiquiti build than the Linksys build so I'm going to defer a lot of this to someone else for the exact specifics.

My guess is that your main node for whatever reason is not advertising the route.  You could look at the OLSR status screen and get some info about it.  Some information would have to be gleaned from the CLI.

A quick test would be to ping 8.8.8.8 from the command line and see if you get a response.  If not than that is why the node is not advertising the internet because it can't reach a test host.

I'm not aware of anyone off hand who is using one so will defer that.

Unless your running a lot of services on the node the extra ram may not be a need.

The question is what would the ram be used for ?  Answer that to give you the response to know if you need it or not.

BTW: The Ubiquiti Rocket has 64mb ram and IS supported for sure (though the Ubiquiti image does use a bit more ram in general on a fresh install you would have around 40ish mb of free ram) it also has a Faster CPU.

Topic : linksys wrt54 gs v3 enhanced MOD wireless router DD-WRT

I have found on ebay.  what seems to be a Linksys wrt64gs  v3  with a modified aspect that claims to increase the  RAM to 64MB  I  assume leaving the flash unmodified  they describe it as a new in box

only opened in order to install and test firmware

Linksys wrt54gs v3   enhanced MOD wireless router DD-WRT

RAM 64MB  MOD DD-WRT v.24-sp2(08/09/10)mega-build

I understand that the Linksys wrt54gs  was a desirable router which had a 32mb ram and an 8mb flash

this particular router seems to start with that and then add some sort of modification that increases the memory to 64 Mb and I assume leaves the flash at 8Mzb.

will this router work and idoes  the modification appear as one that will increase capabilities as it increases the Memory to 64Mb .  will the hsmm mesh firmware install the same and will it work properly as a node as the unmodified version of a Linksys wrt54GS v 3 ?

Has anyone heard of this or has it been tested or used by anyone ?

I am a newbie with the hsmm mesh and don't want to purchase something that will not work but if the 64mb memory would be useful  maybe its worth a little more money !

The nodes are not picking up the default. It works when I route add a default per node, but the default is not being advertised. Any ideas why?

Topic : Help us gather info on UBNT Devices

Here's where we stand with board.info files as of March 10, 2014.  Thanks to all those who have contributed to this effort.

We still need those in RED.  The others we don't need because we already have them (GREEN) or our BBHN firmware currently supports them (BLUE).  We are particularly eager to add to the M3 column.

M2 M3 M365 M5
Pico HP
Nano Station
Nano Bridge
Nano Loco
Bullet HP
Rocket HP
AirGrid HP
Bullet HP Titanium
Rocket HP Titanium

So, if you have any of the devices in red, we are asking for your help in running the following procedure:
1) It must be running the AirOS.
2) Telnet or Putty into the node (default user is ubnt; password ubnt; default ip 192.168.1.20)
3) Run "cat /etc/board.info"
4) Save the resultant file and post it in response to this post.
As responses come in I'll continue to post periodic updates to this chart.

Thanks and 73,

Andre, K6AH
