How we used HSMM-MESH™
Topic :
HSMM-Mesh and AmprNet
Hi, I have attached picture with my IP addresses. NanoStation and AirGrid link it is outside Mesh Node and you must use different class IP for example 192.168.2.x for Access Point local users via NanoStation and for link PointToPoint via AirGrid 192.168.3.x . nanoStation and AirGrid in this example I have use when You want mix hamnet solutions. One is Mesh Nodes working on 10/8 Ip addresses use WRT54 and now NanoStation but with special firmware BBHN. and other solution Hamnet like exit in Europe were base on firmware Ubiquiti and hardware but working on ham radio bandplan. You can skip NnaoStation and AirGrid configuration.
Raspberry Pi have internal network IP like 192.168.1.2 and run AmprNet GW with IPIP tunnel where my amprnet ip is 44.165.32.1. WRT54 with BBHN firmware which I have connected via WAN to my local router use ip address 192.168.1.3 and I have run pointtopoint tunnel to my raspberry P for 44/8 network and WRT54 have 44.165.32.254 ip. I have setup masquerade ip adress10/8 via tun0 interface to 44/8 network. and add to OLSRD config that my WRT54 is router for 44/8 network. For this all users from Mesh Nodes can connect to Amprent and my Raspberry PI server which have many services for local users. I have show part my config amprnet GW on post: http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/hsmm-mesh-forums/view-postlist/forum-4-applications/topic-775-nntp-network-news-transport-protocol.html#ccbp3486

Thanks for info Tim! I am new to this system and still have a lot to learn. I was hoping to connect one of my nodes to my internet router so I could then access the internet via the mesh from a computer plugged into a second node at a different location? Is there a step by step walkthrough/guide, youtube video, or website that can assist me with that? |

James There are a number of people in Santa Clara County working on and learning about BBHN. A couple of us have nodes up in Milpitas. There is active work being done in Cupertino and a few other cities in the southbay. The county ARES/RACES group has just started a web page and yahoo group for those interested.
http://www.scc-ares-races.org/mesh/index.html We plan to demonstrate Mesh at the County wide ARES/RACES drill in April in an attempt to generate more interest. Tim KE6TIM

Interesting Waldek, I'll look into doing AMPR gateway, would be interesting to see if I can get connectivity to 44.x.x.x ip space. |

Help us gather info on UBNT Devices
Thanks Tom! That's a big help. It means the AirGrid will be in our upcoming M5 release.
We still need those in RED. The others we don't need because we already have them (GREEN) or our BBHN firmware currently supports them (BLUE), or we already have commitments from hams to provide them (YELLOW):

So, if you have any of the devices in red, we are asking for your help in running the following procedure:
1) It must be running the AirOS.
2) Telnet or Putty into the node (default user is ubnt; password ubnt; default ip 192.168.1.20)
4) Save the resultant file and post it in response to this post.
As responses come in I'll continue to post periodic updates to this chart.
Thanks and 73,

Link Quality Number
Hello Mark, The LQ (Link Quality) number is provided by the OLSR routing daemon (which makes the decisions of what is the best way to get to each node in the mesh) The LQ variable is the measure of the quality of the link from the remote node TO your node. It is basically based on how likely a packet sent from the remote node is to make it to you. If it shows 70% you have a 30% chance that any packet sent from that node to you will need to be resent because it was lost being sent to you. Signal Strength has a lot of impact on LQ, local noise on your side from other wifi devices etc will have an impact as well (Wifi is a Carrier Sense Multiple Access protocol -- However most indoor nodes will NOT hear your far away remote sender so they will NOT sense the channel is in use and as such they can double on top of the packet you are trying to receive) As far as I know the signal levels are fairly accurate. They are not a spectrum analyzer so I wouldn't use it to say "this device transmits at X watts" but it should be close enough for discussion of figuring out how strong a receive signal you have.

Did you guys every get some nodes up and running in Cupertino and San Jose? Any chance you could post the locations on the map?
I am planning to do the same in Saratoga & Fremont.

Saratoga, Fremont, San Jose Mesh network plans
Hi, KH2SR here. I am planning to have my first Mesh node installed near downtown Saratoga in the next couple weeks. I have successfully flashed one wireless router already and will be doing more in the coming days/weeks. I also plan to eventually help other ham friends set up nodes around Saratoga, Fremont, and possibly West San Jose after that. With any luck we will be able to create a usable network. Does anyone know of any other active nodes in any South Bay Area towns? Such as Saratoga, Los Gatos, Campbell, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, or San Jose? If so how can we get these nodes listed on the map for this website. I found this map online and was hoping it was a map of Broadband-Hamnet node locations in the South Bay: ( http://comopview.org/scewn/ ) Is there any chance this network is linked to Broadband-Hamnet? Could anyone shed some light on this please?
Also how do I add services other then internet access to my nodes? Such as File Sharing, Web Cam, VOIP, Instant Messaging, Email, or APRS? What kind of access will other hams connected to my node have to the data/files on my computers?
Any feedback at all would be much appreciated.
Thanks and 73!

Signal strength, distance, and obstructions
Hello, The situation is connection of 6.9 miles. My current elevation is 932 feet on a 35 foot tower with a parabolic dish 24 db gain a 2 watt amplifier with the node on the tower 6 feet of feed line to the dish. The other amateur is at 725 feet of elevation on a 30 foot tower with either a 13 element yagi. Sounds simple at that point but 2.5 from me is an obstruction either a hill, woods or both showing twenty feet above our direct path. The question is will this work or should we use a third node? Thanks |

Thanks Conrad. After reading your post I realized I had wireless on at the same time I was on the wired connection. I turned that off, and I also did the Network Manager changes that were in that link you gave me. I rebooted everything and now it works. I can telnet to raspberrypi, no need for IP address or appended .local.mesh. Thanks again for the help. |

Give "cat /etc/resolv.conf" and see if the local.mesh is in the list if not (for example you are connected via dhcp to a wifi and via wire to the mesh node ) Try reading http://askubuntu.com/questions/52001/adding-additional-dns-search-domains-when-using-dhcp for how to setup. Main thing is to get it to have a search line with "local.mesh" on it (see man resolv.conf in Linux for more info on this file). You can just edit this file and out it in but often it is overwritten so it won't stick for long. |

First post, dns question
Hi all. Just got two nodes talking to each other, one end has a Raspberry Pi attached, the other has a Ubuntu laptop. I can see the RPi from the laptop, but only if I use its name, raspberrypi, with .local.mesh appended, or if I use its IP address. The quickstart says this situation is because my dns is messed up. I've tried a number of fixes to the dns on the Ubuntu machine but have had no success. My question is, can I modify something so I don't have to append .local.mesh? Or do I use raspberrypi.local.mesh? Thank for any suggestions, and a big thanks to the developers! Broadband Hamnet is cool! Art KB0TRK New Hope, Minnesota |
