Topic : New HSMM-MESH Node in Hillsboro

Hey Dan, Sorry for the lack of a reply! I have the node up, but unfortunately the range is not very good, only about 0.5 miles in open space. With the official Ubiquiti support, they do plan on supporting the 3 GHz radios (the M3). We have a pretty good amateur allocation there, so I'll be focusing on making a high-power outdoor installation with that gear. --Chris

Topic : WRT54G conversion from Tomato

I picked up a WRT54G V3 the other day at a garage sale. When I got it home and fired up it worked just fine but when I tried to access the interface, it would not let me in and it kept saying that the router says "tomato". I did a hard reset and it still said tomato, but it did let me in with the admin access code. Once in I realized that the software in the router was not DD-wrt but rather something called Tomato! I did a search on the Internet and found out what it was and how it worked. I tried a direct conversion from tomato to the first BBHN iteration for MESH. This did not work and, fortunately, did not brick the router. The router just would not accept it and did a reboot back to tomato. After reading some more, I decided to try and bring the firmware back to the original Linksys software. This worked! I went through a complete process and restarted the router and all was fine. I then did the upgrade to the first level of MESH, followed all the steps, including the new password etc. Turned it off and on and it booted up just fine. I then did the final upgrade to BBHN Ver 1. All went well. I now have another MESH router.

I included this in the forum in case anyone comes across a WRT54G router that has Tomato running on it.

Happy MESHING

X-Host Direct is DMZ mode. No port forwarding is required as your computer gains a unique address reservation. If you want to use port forwarding, change X-Host Direct to NAT.

Topic : V1.0.0 and moving data across the mesh

We are trying to setup a net to allow one computer to access a shared directory on another computer.  I have seen the examples on here relative to setting up port forwarding and the DMZ setting but I do not see the same thing in the 1.0.0 setup pages.  I'm thinking that the examples were written for 0.4.3.  Basically the examples no longer seem relevant in the respect of entering the setup data.

I have been known to miss stuff sitting right in front of me so could someone help me with this problem. Laughing  Where is the DMZ setting or is it still used?  I've logged in so I have permission to make changes.

As I said I want to be able to access a shared directory on computer A on node n6sxr-100 from computer B on node n6sxr-101.

Is there a change document for the migration from 0.4.3 to 1.0.0?

Okay, we'll be getting after M5 next followed directly by M3. Can't exactly predict release dates, but you won't have too long to wait. Andre , K6AH

A few of us here in the Portland area have been waiting for non-2.4 alternative. We've been experimenting with the M3 series as the frequencies are a lot more appropriate (and with a lot less interference) for amateur radio use.

I absolutely love the M3 as well! Any news about BBHN firmware for the Ubiquiti 3 GHz line?

Topic : WRT54G or WRT54GS is the extra expense worth it?

I'm just getting started into MESH.  I've looked over the forums and haven't found my answer so I hope I haven't overlooked it.  I have found used WRT54G V2 to V3 and WRT54GS V2 online.  I have noticed the WRT54G V2 to V3 list for quite a bit cheaper than the WRT54GS V2.  Looking at the list of workable routers, the difference I see between the two are that the WRT54GS V2 has more RAM and flash memory than the WRT54G V2 to V3.  The CPU speed listed is the same.  My main question is; is it worth the extra money to get the WRT54GS?  I can see how you would want a fast processor to route the information where it needs to go as quickly as possible, but as long as the firmware fits in the flash memory of the WRT54G, is it worth the extra expense for the WRT54GS just to get more RAM and more flash memory?  Will the added RAM and flash memory make it worth it?  I hope that makes sense.

Hello neighbors,

I just wanted to let you know that I will be doing a presentation about HSMM at Mississauga Amateur Radio Club (location: http://www.marc.on.ca/marc/club/club_map.asp ) on Thursday, February 13, 2014

I am planing to spend half of the time on the introduction to the technology, while other half of the time will be dedicated to what has already been tried and achieved, and the plans for the 2014 followed by a discussion. You are all welcome to show up and take part. HSMM is a big project and it takes everyone's effort to build the net in our region.

See you there,

Anthony VA3IDL

The M3 line KICKS BUTT!

You can set up to a 40Mhz channel, and I have seen 108MB/s form the built in speed test.

(I have a NS3 and my friend has a NB3 on a dish aimed at me)

And yes, you can set anywhere from like 3.0 to 3.8, so it will definitely work for the Ham band!

These are great switches and the price is reasonable ($129). Thanks for the update. I'm happy to see they work on BBHN.

Hi all,

My background is in RF engineering, I wanting to find out if the Rocket M3 units are able to operate within the 9cm band from 3.3 to 3.4GHz? if so we are planning all our data links here in Auckland between Mesh networks on 13cm (2.4Ghz) to be on 3.3GHz. The approach we are taking is to build a high speed data pipe to carry Packet radio packets, Mesh data and video over IP.

This why I'm doing this engineering for both this high speed data network and the DATV repeater at the same time.  I have tested Rocket M5 units and I'm working on the bases that the M3 will provide the same amount of data through put. At this stage we only require point to point linking on 3.3GHz with the Mesh operating on 2.4 and 5.6GHz.  I would be interested in finding out all I can about this Ubiquiti product.

Well, now I'm a bit more confused. I plugged an Apple extreme base station into node 2 (not the internet gateway), with the base station set as a bridge. Then, I disconnected the mac from node 1 and turned on wi-fi, connecting to HamLink (name I gave the base station). Now, typing buckspc into the browser takes me right there! Moreover, my ipad can logon to buckspc and send email via webmail, paclink, node 2 to node 1, and the net. This is great, just what I want. I'm curious, though, as to why I can use buckspc as the browser address when I'm connected via the Apple bridge, but not ethernet directly to a node.

Thanks for the prompt reply. The gateway box was not checked on either node; that was the problem. Now it is checked on node 1, connected to the Belkin router. My idea for hamnet is EMCOMM at served agencies (I'm in PPARES). I have WAMP server, AfterLogic Webmail, and paclink installed on the laptop. Just now, I logged onto webmail from the mac to the PC via node 1 to node 2, and wrote a message. Then, I used paclink to connect via telnet, node 2 to node 1 and hence the internet, to send that message. It worked. One thing that puzzles me is the address needed to logon to webmail. On node 2, DHCP 10.33.28.179 is reserved for buckspc, and that is shown under current leases on the port forwarding page in setup. From the mac, I can logon to webmail using http://10.33.28.179, but http://buckspc gives me the error that "the server where this page is located isn't responding." What am I missing here? I'm using 5 Host direct with DHCP checked on each node.

Is The one with the Internet connection the only one with the wan gateway box checked? What os? Check if it is trying to use a proxy, DNS address are obtained automatically.

Did some research on mesh nets after the AV-ARES meeting last Saturday 1/25/14. Figure getting into your net from Lancaster and the Antelope Valley area would be a long shot, at best, but, I'd like to be included in your discussions. Thx. 73 de kc6uvm George Becker Lancaster, CA
