Topic : HSMM talk at Mississauga ARC on May 28

Hello Anthony, I was just wondering how the talk went? I just joined the list here the other day so I missed it sad to say. Here in Toronto I have a node all set up and boxed ready to go up when the wx improves. I intend to try voip among other things and there are a few others who are going to try as well to do something. This project has a bit of potential I think, we just need to get more upgraded routers in the right hands and let natural Ham curiosity take over HI HI. As for the voip by the way I have a 4 jack gateway from Grandstream on order, should be here this week. I figure if I don't use it in TO I'll use it out at our farm for remote rig control with Ham Radio Deluxe. I'll only be at 40 feet HAT so its a bit of a long haul for us but maybe some day....

Topic : use of Ubiquity M2 bullet systems

Ok, I ordered from Amazon: 1) ubiquity bullet M2 HP 2) two port POE hub built for the ubiquity 3) eNgenious EAG-2407 8 dB gain antenna Total cost about $120. It took about 15 minutes to configure the ubiquity unit. Download the firmware to a laptop or equivalent. Turn off wireless and set a fixed ip address in the 192.168.1.xxx space which is not the address 192.168.1.20. The ubiquity bullet M2 HP is on 192.168.1.20. You may get a certificate error, but click through it. Now download the firmware. Reset the laptop or equivalent to dhcp ip address assignment and go for it. The eNgenious EAG-2407 antenna attaches perfectly with the connector on the ubiquity M2 bullet HP BUT the antenna mounting sleeve is too long and you will have to play with the mounting approach. It is running 20 dB or so stronger than my Linksys system in the same spot. My thanks to the HSMM team for producing this firmware package!!! It is a great breakthrough. I plan on mounting the ubiquity unit outside with no network connection to connect the mesh and a Linksys inside for use with client systems and potentially internet connections.

Thought about putting up a router here in Elyria Ohio , but there is nothing even remotely close to my location that it would connect to. So my question is would it even be of any value to set something up. If so what would the benefits be ?

Hi Waldek

I'm Kevin G7UXW. i've been testing my pi,beagleboard and routers to great effect and all is looking good. I copied your HamNET-mesh-server.png file and added some questions in red with regard to IP addressing for attached devices.. I've posted the page at www.qsl.net/g7uxw/44network.png .. This mite seem a strange way of doing things but it will put a picture in my head of what things should look like

This is the fastest learning curve i've been on

Is it normal behaviour for HamChat to retain data from previous sessions?  Can that be easily deleted? Each time I open it, past discussions are still there.

Minor nit in the help.html file under the section of "Installing firmware with tftp".   The IP address of the Bullet you want to 'tftp' the firmware to will be 192.168.1.20 according to Ubiquiti's website.  This is also the address I used when tftp'ing the latest firmware into the Bullet I have.

The 192.168.1.1 IP address is that used by a WRT54G in the same circumstances at power up.  Maybe not always the case but I seem to recall this is what a number of Atheros-based wireless routers use. Naturally, your mileage may vary.  :)

Yeah, the black injector/outjector(?) pairs will work great when used together but since the Bullet has the outjector built in yer gonna hafta to make sure the voltages are on the right pairs.

Topic : Newbie Quandary...

I am thinking of getting started.  What I would find of most value to justify getting a couple of routers and experimenting, is the ability to build a D-Rats-like environment for chat and BBS.  My interest is in supporting events like airshows [noisy environments], marathons and EmComm [rapid deployment].  Initially I wouldn't be much interested in phone.  IP camera would be quite valuable!  I did get 'the book', I've even got a hard copy on order from Amazon.  A LOT to take in for a lowly, hard-core, end user!

Any information about applications or how others are using BB-Hamnet for event support is GREATLY appreciated,

Charles
