For those who swear they cant find any WRT's at reasonable prices... http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000BTL0OA/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used&qid=1371790647&sr=8-1 WRT54GL's $24.82 and up. Now quit whining and get meshing !!!

Besides, the serial port in the WRT54G is NOT RS-232 but TTL (0-3.3v) serial. You'd need a TTL-to-RS232 adapter if you'd want to connect it to a PC's serial/RS232 port. |

Thank you! That is exactly what I was asking! I was beating my head against the wall.
[KF5JIM 2013-06-20- 20:48:38]: There is a serial port on the WRT54G router board...
There is an easier way via a network adapter. What you do is plug an Ethernet cord between your computer and router and with putty open, ssh into the node with your host set as localnode and your port set as 2222. username is root, and your password is what you set it to be in the initial setup.
Is this what you are asking about? |

I just finished installing the firmware on my WRT54G v2.2 and my mesh node is set up. Now on to Putty (and other software). Do I have to have a COM connection to the router via the serial port> DB9 to RJ45 to make the connection? ..or is there a way via the Network Adapter?
Thanks,
Jim |

What to install on a permanent node?
I've got two nodes loaded with the latest updates but as both my home and office are in rural and relatively flat Florida I don't hold much hope for setting any distance records between my nodes. What I'd like to do is install a node at home and work with an internet connection and hope to get someone else in the area interested. Besides setting the nodes as internet gateways what else should be installed to make them as useful as possible to someone else looking to setup a mesh connection? I plan to install either one node or both outside with a 5' long Alfa wifi antenna. |

New node in San Francisco (Bernal Heights)
Hi Rob, I had pulled my node down since there was no local activity. I've been thinking about reflashing and putting it back up. I'll have some time this upcoming weekend and will give it a go, I'll try to give you a call.

Hi Jack,
Its been a while since you posted, but if you are interested I just flashed a WRT54GL, and from my QTH (550ft on the slopes of Mt Tam) can see Berkeley. If you want to sked, call me on the Mt Tam repeater 146.700 pl 179, or call 415 225 9170

Hi Jeff, I just got a WRT54GL flashed and looking for neighbors! I am on the slopes of Mt Tam so might make it to your QTH from there - I might drive around with it in my car over Field Day weekend. You can call me on 415 225 9170 if you want to set up a sked.

I was able to recover the mesh node using the static ip/tftp method right after powering up the AP. Running and meshed again. |

TeamTalk 4 Server on Raspberry Pi over HSMM-Mesh
AD7QF,
Thanks for the heads up on TeamTalk! I had not heard of this one before, and I got the server loaded up on my Rpi tonight with two windows clients. I love how full featured but lightweight the clients are. The media streaming feature is especially cool.
I'm going to roll this one out for field day this weekend to the four nodes we'll have going, this will be fun.
Thanks again!

Gents, if you would want to write up a small document and take pictures, we would be glad to make up an article on the main site under FD.Just email them directly to me and Ill format the articles.
Id like to get as many notes as possible from around the country/world on how everyone's mesh logging network did this year, good things and/or gotchas.
Thanks and Happy Meshing! Jim K5KTF

PARC Field Day and HSMM-MESH
This year the Portland Amateur Radio Club will be deploying five HSMM nodes primarily for network logging. This is the first year we've tried it at field day, so we'll see how it goes. We operate QRP, battery powered with four stations. Maybe five this year. A Raspberry Pi will provide SMB file sharing, IRC services, Web Services and will have a few movies loaded for helping keep us up in the late of the night. Mesh nodes will have internet connectivity via 4G - - Thank you PDAnet+. Swing by Kelly Butte in SE Portland anytime saturday - Feel free to bring your node, your radio, or both!! |

Field Day HSMM-MESH test
The Albany Amateur Radio Association will be operating Field Day this year from its usual location at the Hailes Cave Area of Thatcher State Park in Voorheesville NY. We plan to have an HSMM-MESH node at the site operating throughout the FD operation. From this site on the edge of the Helderbergs we can see most of the Capital Region to the north. If you can see the Helderbergs and want to try putting a node on for FD take a look for us. The node call will either be KM2O or K2CT. This test will be our first true deployment of a network and will be useful as we start to plan permanent nodes and applications. Thanks Dave KM2O

Node access and OLSR questions ?
OK, first, lets fix Firefox from adding the www and .com:
-
In the Location/URL bar (where you would type in www.somewebsite.com), type about:config and press "Enter"
- The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. "Click I'll > be careful, I promise!", to continue to the about:config page.
-
In the Search field, type "browser.fixup.alternate.enabled"
-
Double-click the "browser.fixup.alternate.enabled" preference to set its value to false.
There may also be entries related to browser.fixup to add www and com. Watch and be careful, or you may have to reinstall Firefox
Next, the DNS issue. Under the menu (to the left) User Documentation, Using the Mesh ( http://www.hsmm-mesh.org/documentation/96-using-the-mesh.html ) at the bottom you will find some useful things to do in Windoze to help work around the DNS problems. (scroll to the last black box/command prompt screenshot, and the paragraphs under that). Another "trick" to see if its the DNS buggering you is see if you can find the IP address of the target node, and use it in the URL with :8080. If that works, then its the DNS on the machine you are on, and the webpage given above should fix it.
Hope this helps. KTF

Node access and OLSR questions ?
I am just getting started with Mesh nodes myself, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt. I too had something similar happen. It all revolves around proper DNS resolution. If you try http://nodename.austin.tx.us.mesh:8080, I bet it will work. Just replace the "nodename" portion of that URL with the real node name you configured it with. If your wired LAN connection is trying to use a different DNS server than the node or domain search suffix other than austin.tx.us.mesh, you will have issues. Hope you get it worked out. Please let me know if I was any help.
Thanks Jesse |
