Has anyone used a WRT54GC (C="compact")?  My neighbor gave me one, but unfortunately without the wall wart, and this one is a real oddball:  3.3V @ 2A.  Haven't found any of the wall warts at the local Phoenix Goodwill stores but I do see them on Ebay.  This one has one antenna ("7dbi") whip with a reverse SMA Male.

Tnx,

Chuck

Topic : Is there a way to NOT subscribe?

By default, the forum system sets me to "subscribe" whenever I post.

There's a "no" subscribe option when I post, but I seem to get subscribed even if I check that.

Then I have to go back and manually unsubscribe if I don't want to be subscribed.

Then it e-mails me a confirmation that I've been unsubscribed.

I don't want e-mail, I'll look at the forum when I want to read it.

Is there some way to avoid subscribing by default?

It would probably be best to wait for the Broadband-Hamnet version of the WRT-54G software before trying to do Pi.

Due to bigendian issues, it might not be possible to do a Pi version compatible to the current HSMM.   It might work now, but Broadband-hamnet should remove the bigendian compatability issue.

Our mesh is based on OpenWRT.  OpenWRT on the Pi systems is "in the very early stage."

http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/raspberry_pi

Mesh on the Pi is a very exciting possibility.

Close enough Mickey :-)

And this should be out in June for the manual-on-other-hardware, then whenever Dave can tear himself away from that J-O-B to do fun stuff and rework it again to make all hardware GUI compatible and easy again,

Disclaimer: I'm not on the development team, so this may not be exactly correct.

I believe Ubiquiti won't talk to HSMM at all due to some of the software components being incompatible.  It's a bug in the open source components used in HSMM.  The processor in the Ubiquiti devices won't run the same software in the WRT-54G and interoperate.

In order to connect a router (or computer) to the current HSMM, you have to load and configure OpenWRT, OLSR, and a few other things.  With the current HSMM software, you CAN connect some other kinds of wifi devices to an HSMM node and communicate.  Because of the software bugs in some of the open source components we use, this fails with Ubiquiti and many other kinds of equipment.   It's a "big endian" problem if that means anything to you.

The Broadband-HamnetV1 should remove or fix these particular bad components.

After that, any sufficiently capable router or network device can connect to Broadband-Hamnet if you can figure out how to load and configure OpenWRT, OLSR, and any other pieces.  Ubiquiti should work, but YOU have to figure out how to do the configuration yourself.  It's not "easy," but a few people have figured out how to do it already.

HSMM and Broadband-Hamnet do the hard part of this for you on WRT54G routers.

Hopefully, in the future, we will produce an automatic configuration process for Ubiquiti that's as simple to use as the current WRT54G process.  The same sort of tools for other routers/hardware may follow.  This will probably not be in the first release of Broadband-Hamnet.

Other than the fact that some hardware is not compatible with HSMM, there is nothing preventing anyone from writing their own process to connect XYZ model 1234 router to the current HSMM.   When Broadband-Hamnet is released, the list of compatible hardware will grow immediately.

The WRT-54G Wikipedia article lists this.

The article calls it a "reverse polarity TNC" connector.   I've also heard it called "reverse TNC."

It's not really reverse "polarity," but that's what it's called.  The "polarity" isn't switched, the pins and sockets are moved from one housing to the other.

Be careful when buying a connector or cable.  The male connector is often labeled as female.  I've even seen the same connector labeled as male and female in different places on the same web page for an online seller.

The router has a pin on the center conductor and male threads on the outer shell.

The antennas has a socket on the center conductor and female threads on the outer shell.

"Male" should mean the connector with the pin on center conductor, but many people call this a "female" connector for reverse TNC plugs.  You pretty much have to find a picture to be sure which one you're getting.

I could bring our two - not sure if I can get them updated before then with the most recent apps I've seen posted elsewhere on this Forum. Would be neat if there were a Broadband-Hamnet/HSMM-Mesh table where someone would update & test routers. David KD4E

Dave,

I can bring a Dayton as well.  I'll have one in my vehicle.  See if you can spot it with your node(s).

I am in the research phase of building a MESH'able Asterisk using DUNDi Module for installation on OpenWRT/HSMM-MESH. The purpose of this is to provide a MESH'able Tel-Net that is able to connect any extension on any node to one another as long as the target extensions node is connected.

Latest word is that there will be a FW update around June (see the news/main page).

In that update, lotsa things will change.

It will work on WRT's as usual, with the GUI setup and all.

An other thing, for those wanting to work on other hardware, you will be able to use the FW on other hardware, and still mesh up to WRT's. etc, but it will need to be manually setup for anything other than a WRT.

Then in a subsequent release down the road, there should be the easy GUI support for the other hardware.

Topic : WRT54G-RG/TM Flashing Process

This is a cut and paste from the guides that I used. I have omitted some parts, edited, and added others. I take no credit for the process its self, just for putting it together for the HSMM-MESH users. Credit goes to the DD-WRT Wiki, and the HSMM-MESH Firmware installation guide.

  1. Download the CFE_Updater-WRT54G-RG.bin from here: ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/tornado/CFE_Updater/
  2. For the RG Router double check that you got the file with RG in the filename!
  3. Download the TFTP.exe file from here: ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/tornado/Windows-TFTP
  4. Download the svn 12548 NEWD_Mini.bin (NOT NEWD2!) file from here: ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24_TNG/svn12548/
  5. Read the peacock announcement here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=51486
  6. Do a proper hard reset on your router, according to the instructions at note 1 of the peacock announcement. Because you do not have dd-wrt firmware on the router at this point, you will not be prompted for a password.
  7. Connect your computer to your router with a lan cable, connecting to a LAN port on the router.
  8. Set your computer to a static IP address of 192.168.0.17 and a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask.
  9. Open your browser window to 192.168.0.1. You should see the linksys webgui. If you don't power cycle your router.
  10. Go to administration, firmware upgrade
  11. Select the file CFE_Updater-WRT54G-RG.bin (the one you downloaded in the first step) and click upgrade.
  12. GO FOR A WALK for at least 5 minutes. IF YOU TOUCH YOUR ROUTER YOU WILL LIKELY BRICK IT!
  13. Change your computer to a static IP of 192.168.1.17. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
  14. Open a command window and try to ping 192.168.1.1. with the "ping 192.168.1.1. -t" command. You should get some timeouts. When you get a ttl=100, wait two more minutes. Keep this window open.
  15. Open up tftp.exe
  16. Select the address of 192.168.1.1. Leave the password blank. Set it to 99 retries and pick the file dd-wrt.v24-12548_NEWD_mini.bin that you previously downloaded.
  17. Hit upgrade.
  18. GO FOR ANOTHER WALK. WAIT AT LEAST 5 MINUTES. Watch the ping window. You should see ttl=64. When you do, wait two more minutes.
  19. Set your web browser to 192.168.1.1. You should see the dd-wrt password page.
  20. Power cycle your router.
  21. Navigate to http://hsmm-mesh.org/download/firmware/index.html and download the appropriate firmware for your node hardware.
  22. Set your browser to 192.168.1.1, and navigate to Administration, Firmware Upgrade.
  23. click Browse, select the hsmm-mesh firmware you downloaded.
  24. Click Upgrade.
  25. The first time mesh firmware is installed on a router it will take about two minutes for the first reboot to complete.
  26. The installation is now complete, you can now proceed with the node setup.

I hope this helps.

I finally got the grid delivered. What type of connector is on the back of the 54g? Looks like I'll need an adapter.
