Thanks for the quick reply.  That was in fact the problem.  The router is working great now.

Question.... I was working on setting up TS at one point and we came across the issue that even with a non-profit licence it required internet in order to function.... this would defeat the purpose of using it in a disaster.

The WRT54G (original) that runs on 5 VDC only, has the radio on a plug in card module. Check and reseat the radio card as the connection may be poor. Glenn,KD5MFW

Topic : No Broadcom interface found

Hello,

I have a WRT54G v1 router.  For some reason, it cannot find the wireless interface wl0.  In the GUI, I see the following error:

ifconfig: wl0: error fetching interface information: Device not found ifconfig: wl0: error fetching interface information: Device not found wl0 No such device

From a console, I see the following if I restart the network:

root@AC7BR-1:~# /etc/init.d/network restart

udhcpc (v1.4.2) started

Sending discover..

ifconfig: SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device

ifconfig: SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

No Broadcom wl interface found!

No Broadcom wl interface found!

ifconfig: SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device

ifconfig: SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

Sending discover...

No Broadcom wl interface found!

wl0(broadcom): enable failed

The wireless settings in /etc/config/network are:

#### WIFI configuration

ifname   "wl0"config interface wifi

option ifname "wl0"

option proto static

option ipaddr 10.250.120.255

option netmask 255.0.0.0

I am using firmware version 0.4.3.

Any thoughts on why the wireless interface will not start?

Thanks,

Brad

Attached is a drawing of the node stand with all the parts identified.  You'll also find a few photos.

I built this originally as a portability proof-of-concept for the San Diego HSMM-MESH Working Group initiative.  I've transported and deployed it 7-8 times at various ARC meetings around San Diego county drumming up interest in the project.  I wouldn't change it much.

If you decide to build one, I do have some other pointers:

  • About half a bag of Quickrete should be enough.  You can always add more if you find stability issues with wind and the amount of equipment you mount on the mast.  Adding too much concrete just makes it harder to transport.
  • The mast length should be limiited to what you can transport.  You can add a connector (1" galvanized female-female union) mid-way so it'll break-down to a small package.
  • Most antenna mounting hardware assumes 2" masts.  I have found that these mounts work good enough on 1" pipe and 2" pipe is overkill for these devices... only adding weight and inconvenience to deployment.

Got it figured out... I assigned an IP address from the home LAN to the router LAN port. With a router LAN port connected to the home network, the mesh web server is accessible from any PC on the home network. The article on Using the Mesh by Jim, K5KTF, was very helpful.

I have some more questions about the network setup. I would like to connect the router to my home network and be able to access it from a PC on my home network. I would also like to be able to access the internet from the mesh network. Should the home network be connected to one of the LAN ports or should it be connected to the WAN port on the router? The home network uses the standard home network subnet - 192.168.1.1 The WAN port should be able to get an IP address from the home network DHCP server if that is specified in the wrt54 router configuration. Correct? To connect one of the LAN ports to the home network the LAN port IP address needs to be changed to the 192.168.1.x subnet. Correct? Thanks in advance for the help. Ed

Good evening,

My name is Paul, K6GPZ, and I reside in Temple City. I know...not exactly the "High Desert", but this is the only group close enough for now.

Either way, I have a few routers and switches all uploaded with the MESH firmware. I've tested the system quite a bit, and was even successful on running two phones (VOIP) via 3CX, using my computer as the PBX server. System works flawlessly!

Well, just wanted to say HI!!

I found an app that appears to work more reliably than FocusPhone. It's a free SIP client called Linphone (http://www.linphone.org/). It's available on several platforms, but I only tested it on Windows. When the network connection drops for a couple of seconds Linphone automatically resumes the session when the network connection is restored. If the network connection drops for more than 5-10 seconds Linphone closes the session but doesn't crash. I used it in peer to peer mode, but it will also work as a client to a SIP PBX.

Andre, I would love to see a pic ! Also if you have a parts list that would great, I have toyed with the idea of making a portable node vs a static one simply as I do not have much for line of sight. I have also considered a mobile node as well and am looking at those options also. Adam KD5WEK

I've had success in potting 5' long, 1" dia galvanized pipe mast in a bucket partially filled with cement. For added stability I've screwed a tee fitting to the mast bottom to ensure it doesn't come out. You can also add a pipe union just above the level of the cement so the mast can be unscrewed from the bucket. Then I mount the MESH node, solar panel, battery, and charge controller, all to the mast. BTW, the solar panel mount is comprised of another 1” tee fitting screwed to the top of the mast with two more short pieces of the similar pipe forming a mounting cross-member. This allows you to rotate and tilt the panel for optimal sun exposure. All in all I have about $20 in it. Andre, K6AH

With regards to tripods I was searching of all places Home Depot and found the following.. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Pyle-6-ft-Tripod-Speaker-Stand-PSTND2/203346736#.Uaag0NjNm24 I can't imagine this being too bad a deal for 30 bucks this would be a pretty nice one to look at. I can see a way to increase stability by anchoring the tripod with a twist in leash anchor for a dog, the large screw in kind with say a short bungee. Any thoughts ?

The model number WRT54GL with SpeedBooster does not exist. If the unit has SpeedBoost it is a WRT54GS. The seller must give a real model number. There is no way to tell from the incorrect advertisment what the model number is. If it is a WRT54GL of any version it is good. WRT54GS is good up to version 4. Again the seller has combined two model numbers to creat a model number that does not exist. -Glenn, KD5MFW

Sorry for the newb question. Yell

I'm starting to get interested in HSMM-MESH so I started hunting for a router to tinker with.

I read on the starter page:

All hardware versions of the WRT54GL work fine.

I read in the hardware pdf:

WRT54GL 1.0 – 1.1

Higher numbered versions of each model are not compatible with HSMM firmware.

So are all WRT54GLs good or not? Shopping on Ebay I find this one :

Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GL 2.4GHz With SpeedBooster

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Linksys-Wireless-G-Broadband-Router-WRT54GL-2-4GHz-With-SpeedBooster-/261221632281?pt=COMP_EN_Routers&hash=item3cd205c919

Good or bad? Do I have to write each seller and ask for the version number?

Jim

Topic : TX/RX Antennas

I have a WRT54G v2 with the threaded portion of the left side (viewed from the front) RP-TNC connector pulled off from the the rest of the connector on the PCB.  This is the antenna port with the cable attached to the PCB.  I've cut the cable from what was left of the board-mounted connector and desoldered the cable from the PCB, then soldered a 47 ohm 1/2W resistor on the PCB as a dummy load.

I connected a 41' piece of LMR400 on the right (good) antenna port of the router with a RP-TNC to N adapter, and ran the cable outside to a 12dBi panel antenna.  I can change the TX/RX Antenna setting to have both going to either Right or Left antenna port, but the signal strength is the same when measured with a WiFi utility on a laptop near the antenna.

The "How to use the web interface" in the User Documentation says that "viewed from the front" is correct for the GL series but may be different for others.

How do I verify I have the proper antenna port selected?
