Could someone post in layman terms, how to post a picture to your profile.  Thank you in advance.

I am trying to be a computer software developer, but figured i better not quit my day job.

Thanks Again

OK Glenn,

Thanks for the info. I was hoping with the same chipset and flash that maybe there was a chance. I guess I will leave it running DD-WRT for now then.

I did notice that the supported hardware list does not seem to list all the routers that are covered in the firmware download page. Is there and updated list somewhere for the other firmwares listed??

Might want to look at 'nanobridge' options. They quote 35km I think, at full speed. They seem to be very freq agile (ham part of 5ghz vs consumer). I don't have any _yet_ but maybe soon. What I do have from ubnt is a B2 and bullet M2HP (600mw N)

Did you get anywhere with this? Asterisk can run on several of the wrt54 series. you _really_ want a GS though. They are faster and have more space. I have two, one runs asterisk and the other runs freeswitch. To be clear, NEITHER are going to have a GUI like PIAF.

The Buffalo WHR-54S is not on the supported hardware list.  We have regular requests to port the firmware to devices other than the Linksys routers.

We welcome new developers to help with the list of development tasks.  At this time we do not support the Buffalo WHR-54S.

Hello,

I have seen the numerous posts about using HSMM-MESH in other routers and the work being done there. Thanks to the developers for the incredible work so far.

I just acquired a Buffalo WHR-G54S router which has the same Broadcom 5352 chipset and 16mb memory with 4mb flash as the WRT54G. I am curious if the WRT54G firmware could be used in this Buffalo router to make another MESH unit. Any words of wisdom??? Thanks.

I used my WAP only to enable access to a single node (not connected to any other nodes) for testing. I probably wouldn't use it in a "production" environment either as it appears doing so creates a need to adjust routing tables in order to enable certain types of applications. Glenn's advice is spot on. I'd never use an standard WiFi WAP to provide access to any HSMM-MESH network without using the highest level of security. Mark KV4I

This actually a very useful thing to be able to do, for some situations.  But it needs to be supervised.

That is put a normal Part-15 Wi-FI Access Point into one of the LAN ports on a mesh node.  This provides a gateway for widely used wi-fi gear users into the mesh.  But - on the Part-15 AP, turn on some sort of entry code and only hand out the entry information to those you are supporting.  Consider changing the Part-15 entry code information regularly.  That way you keep track of who you are gatewaying into the system.

Hello Mark, Yep, that is what I did. I had one just sitting here, so I thought I would give it a try and it works. I just didn't give the details. This just makes getting into the nodes easier when I'm in the other room with my laptop. Now I can see a rush to get those WAP units..lol 73's de Eric...KD4MZM...

The only way I've accessed my HSMM-MESH node via WiFi on my PC was to plug a standard Wireless Access Point into one of the 4 LAN ports on my node.

Hello All,

Just wondering if you can access a HSMM-Mesh node with a normal built in WiFi card in a laptop? I know your not suppose to be able to do it, but I think I found a way to do it. I know it's working for me anyway. I'm using a HP Mini laptop and can access my Mesh nodes and then jump around to nodes it can see or hear. I also just tried this on my Dell B130 laptop and it works on this one to.

Before I post how I did it, I wanted to see comments on this before I post how I'm doing it in the open. Or you can send me an email in private for details. It was just an idea that worked, so now I can just use my laptop and not be plugged right into a router to get into the mesh network.

Again, just a crazy thought that finally worked out for the good.

I had to also reply via email. I can't see a way to attache a jpg to this: I tend to understand pictures better. Assume Mesh node KC5SII-101 sets 172.27.1.5 in it's DMZ and Mesh node FZU-101 sets 172.72.0.26. Then KA0ABY can access shared Files on N5UBY?

OK, try this: You have a PC on node-a, it gets DHCP'd to 172.27.0.5 (usually it does). On another node, node-b, you have your laptop. It too gets .0.5 (totally separate LAN behind each node, right?) So on each node, you add the .0.5 to the respective node's DMZ. On the laptop, to call the PC, you do \\node-a-name , and then a windows explorer box opens and you can see any shared files on the PC. Vice versa on the PC. Call \\node-b-name Once you have the DMZ set, dont worry about the 172.x.x.x addresses anymore. Just call the node name, or even the 10.x.x.x WLAN IP of the opposite node. The 1/5/13 DMZ thing is different. You could have 1, 5, or 13 devices EACH in their own virtual DMZ on each node. But dont worry about that until you get the NAT DMZ thing down :-) 73 Jim

That's what I can't seem to understand. If I use the device's (Host) IP in the DMZ field say 172.27.0.102. Then how does that allow someone from another MESH node to access computer IP 172.27.0.103? When I put the Host PC's address in the DMZ field it seems to completely cut it off from the net... But with only one PC on each HSMM node it's a little tough to get a full picture of what's going on. Reading the second half of your response, I see I'm missing a setting that tells the mesh how many Hosts are in the DMZ. And the options there are to change NAT to 1,5 or 15 hosts? Hmm… I don't see what NAT has to do with the DMZ but I'm still bouncing around in the dark again. I can tell I'm going to have a whole different view of proxies, firewalls and routers once I've got my arms around this. I shouldn't have wasted all that time memorizing the answers for a Net+ exam. 73, KC5SII

Hi Dave, You would use the 172.27.0.X IP that the router assigned to the device (on windows use IPCONFIG in a command prompt, in linux use IFCONFIG). Or look at the DHCP table on the node itself. If you statically assigned the IP, then use that in the DMZ. There IS the option (under SETUP-LAN SETTINGS) to change the node from NAT to 1, 5, or 13 HOST DMZ, which then creates multiple DMZ's. That works by assigning each Device a name that would be called directly across the mesh. I personally havent used that feature yet, so Im not all-knowing yet, but I know its there and basically how it works. 73 KTF

I'm told I can punch a giant hole in the router using th DMZ funciton.  Im not sure I understand exactly how that works.  I want every computer on every node to have the same acces it might have as if they were all on the same LAN.  I know that makes most IT people cringe but bare with me here, I'm learning.

What IP address do I put in the DMZ field to accomplish that?

A) The routers 10.xxx.xxx.xxx address?

B) the rounters Lan ADress 172.xxx.xxx.001

C) Can I only punch a hole for a single Host on an individual MESH node?

Thanks,
Dave, KC5SII

I see the same thing. The Refresh doesn't get rid of it that I can tell. Dave, KC5SII

Kudos to all of the new members in the learning curve. YOU are the people that move the organization forward. Developers at all levels are necessary but raw energy and curiosity are the driving force behind expanding the project. As you bring in others, show then how to get stuff done and begin using the mesh yourself, you are creating tools to place in your amateur radio tool box. 73, NG5V Rick
