Topic : WRT54GL problem?

Hi Doug, WA3DSP

Maybe try a different antenna and/or check the connections. You could also put one of the nodes in "AP mode" to see how it performs. Could try a different polarization. What kind of antenna are you using?

Hope that helps.

Edit: You could also try re-flashing the firmware and/or using an older version, namely the one you were using when you know it was working. As a computer guy(not a BBHN guy) it sounds like a hardware issue to me but the question is which node is the problem?

Disclaimer: I've never put a node in to AP mode. However, as I understand it, the node should act like a regular AP.

Topic : How did you get your nodes in the air?

Hi all,

I was wondering what other people did to get their nodes in the air. I found a post on a portable setup and that got me thinking about what others have done. I have practically no line of site at my house and on top of that, the area is lower then most of the surrounding area. I am a new ham so I don't have a tower or mast and won't have one for quite some time, if at all.

So, what have you done and what kind of range did you get?

Here is the post I mentioned and the link.

[K6AH 2013-05-30- 08:55:57]:

I've had success in potting 5' long, 1" dia galvanized pipe mast in a bucket partially filled with cement. For added stability I've screwed a tee fitting to the mast bottom to ensure it doesn't come out. You can also add a pipe union just above the level of the cement so the mast can be unscrewed from the bucket. Then I mount the MESH node, solar panel, battery, and charge controller, all to the mast. BTW, the solar panel mount is comprised of another 1” tee fitting screwed to the top of the mast with two more short pieces of the similar pipe forming a mounting cross-member. This allows you to rotate and tilt the panel for optimal sun exposure. All in all I have about $20 in it. Andre, K6AH

[K6AH 2013-06-02- 04:24:53]:

Attached is a drawing of the node stand with all the parts identified.  You'll also find a few photos.

I built this originally as a portability proof-of-concept for the San Diego HSMM-MESH Working Group initiative.  I've transported and deployed it 7-8 times at various ARC meetings around San Diego county drumming up interest in the project.  I wouldn't change it much.

If you decide to build one, I do have some other pointers:

  • About half a bag of Quickrete should be enough.  You can always add more if you find stability issues with wind and the amount of equipment you mount on the mast.  Adding too much concrete just makes it harder to transport.
  • The mast length should be limiited to what you can transport.  You can add a connector (1" galvanized female-female union) mid-way so it'll break-down to a small package.
  • Most antenna mounting hardware assumes 2" masts.  I have found that these mounts work good enough on 1" pipe and 2" pipe is overkill for these devices... only adding weight and inconvenience to deployment.

Thanks KE8AVJ... I will check and make sure that all of the ports are configured correctly. That might explain why I don't drop call when calling from one phone to another on the same node that the RasPBX is also connected to. It only seems to be an issue with other nodes. K5DLQ - I will see about loading third party software to trap a packet cluster for evaluation.... thanks for help from both of you. I'm convinced it is something simple and right under my nose but frustrating when you can't find it!!!!!

This seems to be the answer I've been looking for. We've been trying to get the new "PO" option to work with our Mesh system. We've been able to use the Telnet P2P over an internet router using addy's in the 192.168 realm. Can't figure out how to telnet over a mesh network, however. So, it's good to hear that RMS Relay will work on MESH. Now to figure out how. Dick W4RSS

Topic : Tunnel and port forwarding

I've recently tested FTP, POP3, IMAP, SMTP across the mesh and they all do work but I found you have to be really careful to make sure every ethernet port has the right IP ports opened, such as 21, 25, etc. I made my tests ONLY using LAN ports on the router. Also, in Windoze, for Filezilla to work, I had to open ports 21 AND 20. Port 21 alone would not work right. Using Filezilla I'd get a connection and then a timeout. Once I opened that second port I could use the ftp function in different browsers and navigate among any folders I saw, open them, read them, copy files... all of it worked. Also in Winodoze, turning off the Firewall made everything work immediately. Then by closing it and opening the ports one by one I found the port 21 quirk. Now the firewall is all closed tight and it all still works. Hope this helps.

Hello Patrick. I owe you an apology. The antennas I suggested are crap. Sorry about that but they are not my design. A much better yagi is the one sold by MFJ. Have a look at http://www.mfjenterprises.com/Product.php?productid=MFJ-1800. Also, since you have a GS model, have you considered tunneling yet? 73 - Wil.

I am noticing that when I enable WAN access, the mesh also has access to my LAN.

Isn't the a security and routing issue.  Multiple nodes could be using 192.168.0.x for example and create a IP conflict.

Thanks to AE6XE, it's all sorted out.

For those who will be attempting this soon as FD approaches.

In N1MM go to:

Network Status>Actions>Edit Computer Addresses

Enter the name of the computer and the IP address it has on the LAN of the node that it is on.

Give it a few seconds to resynch and all should be good to go.

Thank you to all who helped.  It was a little easier than I was trying to make it.  ;-)

Youbetcha!

Glenn KD5MFW will be giving his update on the project, and Im sure someone else will be doing an Intro talk (usually kip, but he may miss it this year).

And we will have a table where you can come chat with us.

Are there any BBHN discussions, demonstrations planned or booths recommended to visit during Ham-Com ?

I conquered the d*** thing! :) Got "Windows file sharing" done the hard way. Set up folder to be shared, and connected to \\10.x.x.x\file share. Locked in the dhcp addresses & Mac addresses of the computers. Now to sit back and see what I've actually done. There is a 40 second delay on log updates. Still lots to learn.

It works when both laptops are plugged into the same node.

I tested over my home wifi with the same two computers and everything worked just fine. they got 192.168.0.x addresses from my WLAN DHCP and instantly saw each other and shared files. I then disabled the WLAN adapter in the laptops and connected a node to each laptop and got nothing. I'll try again and see what I can do. I may take some screenshots of the config and you guys may hopefully be able to tell me where I've gone wrong.

The primary mode (and the default) is the direct lan mode. If you set up the nat mode, you have to determine all the ports, forward the ports and manage any changes that may occur because of differning subnets. The direct mode gives your LAN issued DHCP addresses a 10.x.x.x on the logging computer with a subnet containing all mesh addresses. Only those users in the NAT mode are restricted by the the above issues. Direct mode places every logging workstation on the same LAN in the same subnet. Most importantly, if your application won't work with the member computers plugged into the same wired router (test as wired network, not a mesh) it won't work over the mesh either.

Also, do you lose DHCP capability in adding additional connections on both router lan ports?
