That is fine. I know your intentions are good. I just feel morally obligated to inform people of this. |

The intent is to provide access to things like Winlink for accessing via telnet, etc not general browsing activities. The plan is to put a proxy server on the connection to only allow specific sites. I also found that it is easier to install packages if the radio has net access. It is not intended to replace WIFI access for home use. The Denton Co. group is looking at this for a fun project but also part of our EMCOMM plan.

While I agree with everything Clint said wrt your post, this question just bothers me wrt to BBHN: Has anyone used a Rocket or any Ubiquiti radio to provide internet access? All I ask is that you just keep this im mind as you do learn and become involved in mesh activities (from the homepage): Broadband-Hamnet™ is intended for amateur radio use and passing amateur radio traffic. It is NOT intended to replace your personal Internet connection. It is a “feature” that Broadband-Hamnet™ can be connected to the Internet. General Internet access is not its primary purpose. Use your personal Internet connection under Part-15 FCC rules, to serve that purpose. With that said, Mesh on! |

I have used a rocket as the main node at my qth now for several months. If you want to connect the internet to your rocket, you will need a managed switch. If all you want to do is connect a computer or other device to the rocket then you can either plug it into the lan port on the poe injector or if you need more ports use a regular lan switch. I am using a managed switch on mine. I am using a Netgear GS108E. It is working well for me. To use the internet pick the port you want to connect to the internet. Put it in VLAN 1 and leave it untagged. For the port that connects to your rocket Tag that port for VLAN 1. Create another VLAN label such as VLAN 10 and add the ports ouu want on you lan to it.
Another option with the 1.1.1 release. Plug the lan port of the Rocket POE into a lan port of a WRT54G. Plug the internet iinto the Wan Port of the WRT54G. Clint Anderson |

Hi Andre,
Thank you. I really do appreciate all of your responses.
As you speculated, it is the latter path that I am exploring.
And, the key is nothing more than 16 characters in a file. It doesn't get much easier than that.

I have installed ngircd on my Airgrid. I attempted to start it up but I am getting the following error: root@station-id:/etc/init.d# ngircd start ngircd: can't load library 'libnsl.so.0' I can not find a libnsl package in the download section. Do I need to look for another package? 73

See the post on DNS Propagation. Note that 2 issues are described there. We are still working on the NAT issue.

I am new to using HSMM-MESH. Has anyone used a Rocket or any Ubiquiti radio to provide internet access? I have been told I have to use VLANs to split off the WAN port but another told me to just plug in on the network supplying net and enable the gateway. I tried the VLAN config on my HP Procurve but never could get to the outside world.
Is there a good example of how to do this on a Ubiquiti radio since they are single port where the Linksys routers have a dedicated WAN port? 73 KC5GOI

OLSRd Secure Support Configuration
Hi Bob, Sorry for not addressing your last post specifically, by the time I got back to responding to posts I thought maybe I had addressed all of your questions... obviously not. The key file isn't generated, per se, it's there by default. It is simply a text file with the 16-character key. When you load the firmware to node K6AH-001, for example, you are also copying the default key file to that node. Since all nodes have the key file, all nodes use it. Since all nodes use it... it's really no different than no nodes having it... K6AH-001 plays on the mesh network with everyone else. Now, if you were to change the 16 character key on K6AH-001, it would not be able to play on the mesh network because the first node it connected to, say KO2F-001, would look at K6AH-001's key and see that it doesn't match its own key and as a result would not add K6AH-001 to its routing table. OLSR propagates entries in KO2F-001's routing table to other nodes in the mesh. If it's not in the routing table, it doesn't get propagated. Therefore, K6AH-001 will not be able to play on the mesh. Now the converse will likely be the use case you're interested in: You have a need to "secure" your mesh from unauthorized nodes. You establish a secret 16-character key and load (via PUTTY telnet or SSH) the file with that key. You share the key with other authorized users and they do the same. You now have an isolated mesh that will only route data with others using the same key. You should note: this doesn't stop malicious users from attacking individual nodes... it only stops attackers from using the mesh. When additional users are "qualified" to become nodes on your mesh you share the secret handshake (key) and away they go. I hope I answered your questions. Looks like to might be a pretty good FAQ for the masses as well. Andre, K6AH |

BBHN v.1.1 Release for Linksys Devices
I have the same issue to upgarde the firmware in a remote node AE6XE-10 in SoCal. It is 5 miles from my house and takes a half day trip to upgrade. I plan to configure a factory UBNT airOS image as a bridge on SSID "meshnode" with a 24dB grill dish. I'm assuming the airOS "AP-repeater" configuration will connect to a HamNet AP? I'll be testing "in the lab" tonight, unless anyone knows that this won't work? |

Thank you Andre,
I was surprised when I read the release notes and cam across the statement that OLSRd was ON by default. I wasn't sure I was interpreting the statement correctly and appreciate your clarifying the point again here.
Can you tell us how the key file is generated?
I have spent a couple hours looking for the answer to this question and haven't found it yet. This suggests that the answer is probably simple, but.. most answers are after you have them in hand.

BBHN v.1.1 Release for Linksys Devices
Jessie
I identified this to the development team months ago. They have tolde that remote update will be a feature added to the web interface in the future. For now there are few options. If you can setup an internet gateway on your network to have access to the firmware, and you can get close enough to connect to your node through wifi you can use the "meshnode" ssid to connect to your node to do the configuration after you do the basic update via the administration page. No Ethernet cable connection to the router.
The other option is to take your laptop to the node and plug in a cable.
I too am investigating options for a remote update. I will post if I come up with a working solution.
I feel your pain. I have over a dozen nodes scattered around town to get updated.

This raises a problem with the use case of upgrading distant nodes via the mesh connected to the Internet. You'd have to pull all nodes from the field and upgrade them with a direct wired connection.
I understand that there is a security issue with wireless upgrade, but...

Is there anyway to backup the settings of the old system before you upgrade? I noticed that the upgrade "blew away" my old configurations and I had to start from scratch. |

Asterisk on UBNT
Anyone here running Asterisk on a Bullet? Asterisk appears to be running; my Cisco IP phones grab the time and date from the NIST server via a Linksys node but I can't see the actual extension and calls do not place. I've gone through the Linksys instructions a few times and suspect I'm missing something obvious to an experienced hand. One potential: must I still configure port forwarding on BBHN as was necessary on HSMM-Mesh? I've taken a stab at port forwarding via the GUI but it didn't do anything in my case.

OLSRd is defaulted ON. All nodes will be running the default key unless changed.
