San Jose, Cupertino?
I am new, and not yet set up (am searching for a suitable Linksys router), but I would like to put a node on my rooftop in San Jose, near 880 and The Alameda (37deg 20'43" N, 121deg 55'46" W). There are lots of trees around me, and it would be difficult to get my antennas up very high, but it looks as if I have a fairly clear shot WNW from me, toward Mission Peak. Currently deciding whether to go omnidirectional, high-gain, or both. Peter AA6FI |

I have a Rocket M2 which does not have direct internet access. Is there a location that I can download the ngircd 20.2 package and then install it from a local copy. It looks like the package update GUI would support this. |

I'm surprised there's no "SoCal" subforum. I put up a router in San Diego as well. Given the range of 802.11, it's not clear how this works as a thin deployment, and only seems practical as a coordinated cluster for event or demo. I guess I put my WRT54G up (because I had one) and now I'm reading up on what it should do. :) |

Next Steps
For testing and learning, I have 2 NODES set up and running using Linksys routers. I hope to add a 3rd which will be solar powered for remote site or portable use. I am at the stage where I need to learn how to set up various clients or servers, etc. What software or programs need installed and where? Can I access a Node wirelessly? What is needed done to use VOIP telephone connections?
Is there a general guide publication or a set of "How To's"? I need help getting pointed in the right direction !! Ted WB2LOU.......an entry level nubee!

We may have an issue with that device. As we were running through all the board.info files we noticed that UBNT made a board change on the Bullet M5. We will need to research the change and what it's going to take to make them compatible.
To determine whether it's the new or old board, I need you to run the following:
While it's still running the Ubiquiti AirOS:
1) Telnet or PuTTY (SSH) into the device (default user is ubnt; password ubnt; default ip 192.168.1.20)
2) Run "cat /etc/board.info"
3) Copy the resultant output and submit it as in reply to this post.
I am pretty confident we will get them running... I have a few UBNT devices that fall into this same category (NanoBeam M5 for example). We just need the time to figure out what's different about them and code the firmware to deal with it.

Hi Andre,
I received my Titanium M5 HP devices today.
Did you send me a script? I haven't received anything off line from you.

Help us gather info on UBNT Devices
We are in final preparations for our UBNT M5 release (BBHN 1.1.0) and would like the following devices tested to confirm the power setting control works properly.
- AirGrid M2 HP (board.sysid=0x242)
- AirGrid M5 HP (board.sysid=0xe255)
- PicoStation M2 (board.sysid=0xe302)
We are hoping that someone among us owns one or more of them. Getting these tested now avoids the Yellow “UNTESTED DEVICE” banner from appearing and allows the firmware to properly control the device’s power levels.
So, if you own one and have a few minutes we would like you to load our beta release and run a couple quick tests.
Your help is really appreciated! But please get back to me as soon as possible… we don’t want to hold up the release.

Need help getting started with HSMM-Mesh? Just can't get the firmware to
"take"? Wanna find out if that old WRT54G router can be reborn as a High
Speed MultiMedia (hsmm-mesh) network node? Only have one node and no
one to mesh with? :( Have an extra node you want to sell/trade? Join

- 1 or more Linksys/Cisco WRT54G version 4 or less (please see the shopping guide on www.hsmm-mesh.org) routers with wall-wort(s), or bring a compatible Ubiquiti router.
- 1 cat-5 patch cable
- Optional:
- power-squid or power strip to make sharing power easier
- Windows machines should have a ssh/sftp client like PuTTY installed
- bring extra routers to share

Connection problem during installation
Refresh the DHCP'd IP either by ipconfig /release and /renew or just unplug the CAT5 from the NIC, wait 5 seconds and reinsert. We really do need to update the installation instructions under User Docs... With the release of BBHN 1.0, and later, the default behavior changes after you do the initial setup (callsign/password) to hand out 10.x.x.x IPs instead of 172.27.0.x from <0.4.x FW. If you have read up, you will not be able to use a Wifi connection to talk to a mesh node, as it is not a "Wifi" connection anymore. You must plug intot he node to talk to it from a PC. KTF

I have done the following install steps to a linksys router: 1. Loaded your flash program 2. Accesses the router using 172.27.0.1:8080 3. Made changes to the desktop. ie added my call sign to the name
4. Saved changes. I have not been able to access the router after the reboot. 5. I am using a separate nic card for the router it has an address of 172.27.0.2 6. I can see the Hammnet-Broadband-v1 ssid from a wireless connection on another system. I can connect to the wireless link but I am not able to access the router using either wireless or wired connections Windows firewall is disabled, do I need to disable any other security or anti virus programs?
comments please KK6IVW Peter

Can you please elaborate as to what you would be looking for in "basic security is needed." ?
Basic can have many different opinions (such as changing the olsrd code as noted above) or any other number of items so if you could provide a bit more details it would be appreciated.
[W8MRL 2014-05-28- 17:00:37]: Hi all. I just gained access to the forums and I'm trying to gain enough knowledge to see if pursuit of a mesh net is worth the time.
On the topic at hand though, so am I understanding by this discussion that there isn't an inherit security system in place in HSMM-MESH?
** back from reading another thread *** I just read the thread: www.broadband-hamnet.org/hsmm-mesh-forums/view-postlist/forum-1-general/topic-809-what-if-anything-keeps-the-bad-guys-out.html - which answers my own question. This is a show stopper for me, basic security is needed. Without it I don't even want to start down the MESH path.
Keep up the great work guys. Maybe a secure, scalable, network can be created and if anyone can do it - it will be from the amateur radio community.
