Tom, Please let us all know of your progress. We are still looking for some high spots in Albany to try to get some wider coverage relays and connect some of the local nodes. 73 Dave KM2O

The hop may be difficult, the Broward Club may have a node at the 110 tower.  With a little bit of amplification and reconfiguration of the antenna that hop may be viable.  Your hop to downtown should be viable now it the 110 nodes exists.

Let's ask the FCC about music on hold.

§ 97.113 Prohibited transmissions.
(a) No amateur station shall transmit:
(4) Music using a phone emission except as specifically provided elsewhere in this section; . . . [exception not relevant, here]

It looks like music on hold is legal if you are not using a phone emmission.

By the way,

§ 97.113 Prohibited transmissions.
(a) No amateur station shall transmit:
(4). . . obscene or indecent words or language; . . . [most rap fits here]

is not restricted to phone emmissions.

Topic : Question about antenna diversity and directional antennas

I have considered the possibility of actually building aircraft reflections into the the mesh plan. Here in southern Maryland, terrain and forests conspire to limit line-of-sight. However, there are two major airports and a joint Air Force/Navy airbase and a Naval Air station nearby. There are almost always aircraft visible somewhere. Two mesh nodes (hidden from each other) point directional antennas, not toward each other, but in the direction of one of the airports. Back scatter from several airplanes, a few seconds at a time from each might be enough to support a connection. I have not been able to test this, yet. Has anyone else tried this?

I take it that the Broadband-Hamnet v1 OS will execute a Perl script and that there are no missing dependencies. I can't find any entries for Perl in the packages list (on the administration page). I don't understand why many are getting this to install and run with no problems, while those who have tried here end up with the identical problem. 73

Tyler, do you or Tony have a directional antenna up on some elevation? let me know. I might be able to get a node up 400' on the Palmetto Club's site in Aventura at some future time, I plan to ask the members of the club if they would be interested in this, which i think they might since it won't interfere with any of their current equipment up there and I could perhaps throw it on a solar panel to make it completely independent. Let me know if this sounds like a worthwhile project. Ralph, what do you think the feasibility is to link the John Knox node with a 400' site in Aventura? I'm just wondering that given the line of sight is straight through Downtown Ft Lauderdale if it might be a bit challenging with all that noise? Gary -KI4WPI

Sounds great mike! The more nodes we get up on the air, the better! I see the value in this technology, however am still confused as how contacts are made/what we can do with it. Are we essentially building a large network like in a house that I can share files on between computers? I will probably start small as well due to being in an apartment, and not having real estate to put up a high powered node. Thinking though I could put one up on the back deck with a high gain antenna, and maybe get through all the buildings/trees to KD2DLL's node in Rotterdam.

I am glad to hear that fixed the problem! Your problem is in Windows. 5 Host Direct is nothing more than a 5 Host DMZ. So that rules out the mesh as it passes all traffic from point A to point B.

Look at setting up a Samba or FTP Server on a Linux machine if you want to share files between Windows PC's. It takes no more than 30 minutes.

Ok, that did fix the ping issue. So it is a problem in windows 7? I started with a ping as first line troubleshooting. I must not be doing something right. I am trying to share files using SMB (windows file share) by typing \\Ip-address\ it won't find it. From what I have read the PCs should be straight on the mesh and should be able to connect in the same way as if they are on the same node. Sorry still learning any thoughts?

So I just reproduced the same problem you had over here. Typing "netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable" in an elevated command prompt window on the computer fixed the problem.

If it helps I did a tracert and got this:

C:\Users\admin>tracert autolog-pc

Tracing route to autolog-pc.local.mesh [10.102.152.178]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms localnode.local.mesh [10.166.98.225]
2 2 ms 1 ms 2 ms kd8rbh-00.local.mesh [10.12.211.22]

Then it sounds like a firewall issue that could possibly be blocking the request. Let me try some things out over here and get back with you.

Thanks for the fast reply! I had disabled the firewall for testing and set them to windows "home network" type. If the Laptop and PC are connected to the same node they can ping each other. I should still be able to ping it through the other node. Right?

That is not a problem with BBHN. Windows 7, by default, blocks ICMP echo requests (which are needed for pings). Doing a quick search yields this:

Topic : Problem with v1.0.0

Hello all,

I am just getting started with Broadband-Hamnet. I have ran into a problem. I have two nodes flashed with v1.0.0, my topology is like this

Internet Router connected to Node1 WAN port --- Node1 set as gateway & with PC win7 --- Mesh --- Node2 with laptop win7

Both nodes are set to direct 5, PC and Laptop get a 10.X.X.X with 255.255.255.248 subnet. Both PC and Laptop can connect to the Internet with no problems. I have added them to there respected nodes with unique host names. When I ping one of the computers from the other one using the host name it resolves the proper IP address for it but will not allow pings to go through. It looks like the routing is not right but the Internet works.

Any help would be appreciated, trying to set this up for our ARES group.

Thanks
Eli

Jared,

I'm going to be setting up a node in the near future; I'll be happy to share any interesting information that comes my way.

QRZ puts us at about 16mi away from each other; perhaps if I could configure a node at my office in Troy (at some point down the road) we'd have a shot at establishing a link.

In the short term, however, I'm going to start small with a 1W node here at home.

I would recommend the class 10 SDHC cards over the cheap class 4 cards. The reason is that the class 10 cards are much faster than the class 4. I have had an RPi Asterisk solution on both class cards and have noticed a definite speed improvement with the 10's over the 4's.

You can find out the class of the card by either looking on the packaging or on the card itself. There will be an almost complete circle with a number inside...that's the class of the card.
