MESH node started in Broward County
One other location I had thought about, was seeing if we could do something along the FP&L right a ways where the high power lines are, given that they are open and flat for miles on end, there could be potential there in establishing directional nodes over distances easily. I am guessing that by using directional antennas, the power lines would be minimal in generating any noise interference.. |

That would be nice to learn if BARC has their node up and could make things easier getting people accessed along the eastern side of the county.
Just a thought I've been kicking around: One thing that is good about where we are at, is that the entire western side of Broward, Palm Beach and part of Miami-Dade Counties are all Everglades and flat with no tall obstacles I'm thinking that there could be locations (i.e. Holiday park, Markham Park, Air Boat tour building by Loxahatchee Rd (who I know), and I'm sure a few other places which we can set up nodes on solar and battery backup. If we linked them along the open part of the Everglades from north to south, we wouldn't need much for height and the Fresnel zone would be minimal for that area. |

Looking to setup a node
Guys,
What we have found out so far is that trees and terrain are the biggest enemy. Good antennas, altitude and some power will be key. However, big caveat, as you raise ERP be extremely careful. RF radiation becomes a big problem. NEVER operate a node at high power and/or using gain antennas before doing an RF evaluation to find out the safe controlled and uncontrolled distances from the antenna. These levels can severely injure someone too close to the RF source.

The hop may be difficult, the Broward Club may have a node at the 110 tower. With a little bit of amplification and reconfiguration of the antenna that hop may be viable. Your hop to downtown should be viable now it the 110 nodes exists. Ralph

Question about antenna diversity and directional antennas
I have considered the possibility of actually building aircraft reflections into the the mesh plan. Here in southern Maryland, terrain and forests conspire to limit line-of-sight. However, there are two major airports and a joint Air Force/Navy airbase and a Naval Air station nearby. There are almost always aircraft visible somewhere.
Two mesh nodes (hidden from each other) point directional antennas, not toward each other, but in the direction of one of the airports. Back scatter from several airplanes, a few seconds at a time from each might be enough to support a connection.
I have not been able to test this, yet. Has anyone else tried this? |

HamChat server problem
I take it that the Broadband-Hamnet v1 OS will execute a Perl script and that there are no missing dependencies. I can't find any entries for Perl in the packages list (on the administration page). I don't understand why many are getting this to install and run with no problems, while those who have tried here end up with the identical problem. 73 |

Tyler, do you or Tony have a directional antenna up on some elevation? let me know. I might be able to get a node up 400' on the Palmetto Club's site in Aventura at some future time, I plan to ask the members of the club if they would be interested in this, which i think they might since it won't interfere with any of their current equipment up there and I could perhaps throw it on a solar panel to make it completely independent. Let me know if this sounds like a worthwhile project.
Ralph, what do you think the feasibility is to link the John Knox node with a 400' site in Aventura? I'm just wondering that given the line of sight is straight through Downtown Ft Lauderdale if it might be a bit challenging with all that noise?

I am glad to hear that fixed the problem! Your problem is in Windows. 5 Host Direct is nothing more than a 5 Host DMZ. So that rules out the mesh as it passes all traffic from point A to point B.
Look at setting up a Samba or FTP Server on a Linux machine if you want to share files between Windows PC's. It takes no more than 30 minutes. |

If it helps I did a tracert and got this: C:\Users\admin>tracert autolog-pc Tracing route to autolog-pc.local.mesh [10.102.152.178] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms localnode.local.mesh [10.166.98.225]
2 2 ms 1 ms 2 ms kd8rbh-00.local.mesh [10.12.211.22]
