olsr-topologyview hack for MacOS
I have now made a few other changes: • Added an option to use "dig" instead of gethostbyaddr() for address-to-name resolution. Gethostbyaddr() was missing a lot of host lookups. • Suppressed links to 0.0.0.0/0 • Fixed a problem with the --linewidth option. They were sometimes so large they covered the entire page. • Add a timestamp. • Suppress duplicate edges (In a few cases I was seeing more than one path from a remote node to another.) • Cosmetic changes
I'd be glad to share the code if anyone is interested. |

Ah yes. the new "Network Post Office" session type. Got it. Loaded RMS Relay tonight and was able to send a message via RMS Express (Network Post Office) session! Cool stuff. Now, gotta load it on my server and make it work with Wine.
Thanks, K5DLQ

Not all "supported" ubiquiti devices work??
Of course this is only on 5GHz. The supported 2.4GHz(where a lot of the activity currently is) and 900MHz models are safe to our knowledge |

Hi Ron, Yes, there are two type of boards in a few models of Ubiquiti. They are distinguished as: - XM - the older version and the type supported by our current firmware
- XW - the newer version which they began manufacturing around 1/1/2014
I have had success in asking the distributor, before placing my order, to check the manufacture date... which is clearly listed on the box external label, to ensure it's prior to the beginning of 2014. Andre, K6AH

Node-Node Message Transfer and WL2K
OK Darryl, BTW, I still need to figure out how make my paragraphs remain intact. That said, I bet what I'm formatting here is going to appear as one big block. Sorry about that.
Just to clarify, as Mike Burton, xe2/n6kzb has explained in other forums, RMS Relay is the software that acts as the controller for various WinLink products. It is the interface with RMS Packet and RMS Trimode. RMS packet being the gateway for VHF FM users and RMS Trimode for handling the HF venues. For messaging, the Winlink tools have some incredible features to work with:
MPS radio-only (should internet fail over a large regional area)
Normal internet delivery
HF auto forwarding (should internet fail locally)
HF station forwarding selection via Matrix and propagation
SySop defined parameters
etc etc etc......................
Now, as I said previously, they have added a "Network Post Office" option. It differs from a stand alone radio-only set-up in that it is primarily for LAN use. PLUS, RMS Express has a simple user set-up and interface. Importantly, it also can be set up without prior registration and has nothing to do with Winlink servers - strictly for LAN messaging between nodes.
So, after all of that, the simple answer is YES. You don't need the Trimode - you'd have to set up with authorization to take full use of it. You might look a little deeper into Winlink as a value-added-asset to your own operations. It looks like a good fit for this little mesh I have running and hopefully for the county-wide mesh as it grows.

I am about to buy some ubiquity equipment using the approved list. However I seem to remember seeing a post that said that each device must be individually checked to verify compatibility. Something about differing versions of an internal circuit within the same model number. Am I confused? If a test is indeed required, how can one buy equipment if it needs to be physically tested for suitability? Ron, N1AHH

Node-Node Message Transfer and WL2K
Hey There Darryl!
I took this info from the Help file in RMS Relay. It seems that you CAN run Relay
without the full package if you're looking to VHF ops with RMS Packet. As you can see:
RMS Relay is a special program that provides local store and forward message handling, and it makes the station part of the Hybrid Radio Network that forwards messages via radio from RMS to RMS when no Internet access is available to connect to a CMS site. It is normally used in conjunction with one or more instances of RMS Packet or RMS Trimode located on the same computer or local area network. RMS Packet version 2.0.0.0 or later must be used and will need to be configured using the RMS Packet site properties dialog to access RMS Relay. RMS Trimode must be version 1.2.4.0 or later.
RMS Relay can alternatively be set up as a radio only message hub using its own local database. In such a configuration RMS Relay and the supported server are not part of the WL2K system and do not connect to any WL2K CMS. RMS Relay uses the B2F protocol that supports attachments, multiple addresses and tactical addresses.
Now, with that all said, I've got some other insight regarding the newest implementation of the "Post Office" mode. Need to dig that up; I'll post it separately for you. It's a neat option in that is focuses on Node Peer-Peer messaging on a LAN like the Mesh.

Has anyone found something like this for the BBHN?
Hi, A few ideas for you: - Setup an asterisk PABX server and connect SIP phones (hardware or software) Guide here
- Setup an FTP server so you can share files like radio manuals, howto docs etc Guide here
- Setup a text based packet style BBS. Some info on running FBB under Linux here You just telnet into it rather than use a radio.
- Run a web server with a content management system to run a notice board or blog
- xmmp/jabber instant messaging server. Gives text chat, audio and video calls. There is a Linux server program called prosody that works well.
- IP web cams
- Remote rig control
- Remote weather sensors. I have a wrt54g with a ds1820 temperature sensor attached to the serial port.
- Streaming audio. You could take the output of the local repeater (or any received signal) and stream it over the mesh
- DX cluster
- APRS IS server/igate
- Setup a d-rats reflector. not sure how this work as I have only just started looking at it
- Not sure if an echolink server could be setup
- email server - need to be very careful with this one!
As the mesh system is a way of providing the network layer that applications run over, the options are limitless. Anything you can do over the internet is technically possible over a BBHN mesh. Although, some of the stuff on the internet I am lost as to why you would want to do it at all :) Hopefully that gives you some ideas.

Noob questions about newly supported Ubiquiti devices
M2= 2.4GHz band M5= 5.8GHz band
M9= 915MHz band Just like a 2m radio can't talk to a 440 radio directly the same is true for mesh nodes, they only operate on the band they are designed for. What model you choose will depend a lot on your area and their setup. Inside of that each model has different TX Power and Antenna setups so you will want to look at that, some have antennas built in others require an add on antenna. MIMO (two antenna ports) may be better than a non MIMO (single antenna like the bullet)
At the moment my area (San Diego County) is looking at 2.4 for all users, 5.8 for the backbone which is a somewhat controlled network, and M9 hasn't been looked at too much yet but may help on some unique sites. As to what you can operate with, I believe all are acceptable for a Tech in the USA but suggest double checking the frequency allocation charts to be sure.

olsr-topologyview hack for MacOS
In olsr-topology-view (OTV) the ImageMagick program is only required to display the finish graphic on the screen. If you are running OTV on MacOS you can avoid installing ImageMagick and use the Preview application to display the images instead. Just replace the existing code around line 149 with the following: if ($SHOW) {
if ($^O == "darwin") {
system "/usr/bin/open -a preview $TOPPATH/$NAME.$EXT &";
} else {
if ($ROOTWIN) {
system "display -window root -backdrop $TOPPATH/$NAME.$EXT &";
} elsif ($start) {
system "display $FULLOPT -update 5 $TOPPATH/$NAME.$EXT &";
$start = 0;
}
}
}

Password recovery on Ubiquiti Bullet M2HP
I flashed and setup a node for a friend of mine using the v2 software. When I went over to install it on the tower and get everything online, he couldn't remember the password he gave me... I needed to upgrade the software to match everything around him which is now on Ver3!
I found the instructions for the LinkSys router and got that password fixed - but now I have his Bullet that I can't do anything with... No password, no config or upgrade... HELP!?! :) Anyone got any good ideas? I have tried the instructions that worked on the LinkSys, and couldn't get the v2 software to reset. I am stumped at this point...
Trying real hard to get all the local guys interested in this in Brenham, TX.!
Thanks! Bill - N5MBM
