VOIP service providers package and sell discounted Analog telephone Adapters (ATA). They recoup the actual cost of the device in the monthly service cost. For example Frys was selling a basic talk device for $5. The OEM of this device is grandstream and you can buy it for around ~$35 with original firmware.

However, these branded devices have firmware locked to the provider (meaning the "SIP" protocol is configured to use their servers over the internet). To use these devices on the bbhn mesh network requires that you hack or unlock the firmware (and then configure it to use your mesh SIP server--Astrisk--or direct IP# dial).

http://www.bauer-power.net/2010/05/how-to-hack-your-magicjack-to-make.html#.VK3G-SvF-NM

The "basic talk" device can only be hacked if you have never connected it to the internet. The default password is known to make setting changes, but is changed immediately after the device is put on the internet--then it's a brick only usable with that service provider.

I recommend only buying a VOIP device that is sold explicitly with an ability to configure your own SIP server or configurable to use any service provider.

Dahua IPC-HFW4300S. Amazon.com sells them. It is an active POE (48V) and requires an active POE injector. I have it connected to a Linksys 54GL router running BBHN firmware v3.0 I have the camera set to it's lowest resolution of 1280x720. The camera can go much higher in resolution, but the trade-off is the streaming bandwidth through the mesh. The low resolution runs around 400-500 Kilobits per second for a live video feed. If you are in the Atlanta area and can spare an evening, come on out and see a live demonstration.

Success!!  I was able to download NGIRCD.  I will call it a day.

Thanks Darryl and Conrad for your patience!

Thanks again Darryl. I'm looking for the wrt54g, not brcm, I believe.

Hi Richard, I'm interested in BBHN and live in Albany, just West of you. Do you currently have a node active? I'm a week or two away from testing mine. Jay - KJ6HSH

Downloads are under Downloads > (Linksys or Ubiquiti) > Experimental Builds. Though yes the link Darryl gave will work as well. The pages contain all the files with information rather than linking to a single direct file (not recommended as latest builds often change)

I don't want to get off topic here or hijack the thread so Ill make it quick, seeing that the OP is using a "basic talk" can magic jacks also be used on Linksys mesh networks?

Topic : Installation Instructions for Ubiquti Devices

Thanks Darryl and Conrad for your support and encouragement.

Interestingly enough I found the install instructions you mentioned Conrad after I had recovered from whatever the problem was.  I had seen them earlier, but didn't save the link.  And I noticed my screens were just a little different from those shown.  Must be version differences in AirOS from when the instructions were written until now.  I think I am going to go through the entire process and document my experience from having to reload the Ubiquiti OS, all the way to getting the mesh up and running.

And I do understand the 'delay' on producing up to date documentation, I used to be the world's worst on documenting the things I used to do in my IT days.

Meshing along just fine, although this wasn't my first involvement.  Just my first Ubiquiti unit.

Larry, Did you hack-flash this "basic talk" device (I'm assuming it's a grandstream HT701 device originally branded with basic talk firmware)? Can you provide a little more detail on what "node doesn't recognize" means? In the setup screen under port forwarding, it does not show a "current DHCP lease" for this device?

There have been a couple of times where I've not seen a lease when there should have been. This worked for me as a work around (and debug step)--maybe a long shot, but try to access the device by the IP address, "http://10.x.x.x" . Look at basic setup screen for the LAN IP address (and try the next 5 consecutive IP #s). If you plug other devices into the LAN ports on the Linksys, do they receive a lease and work correctly?

For nodes powered by solar, the charge controllers have low voltage disconnects. (Well, you might spend just enough to have this feature in a charge controller.) In my case, I'm using a ProStar. The load low voltage disconnect is at 11.4v (~15% remaining battery capacity) and the reconnect is at 12.6v (meaning sufficient sunlight to power load and charge the battery).

SARTRACK is Search and Rescue software for mapping and logistics.

I am just starting to try to run it over MESH.  Has anyone implemented SARTRACK on a MESH network?

I have not used vi. Am I comfortable? I have a spot to post pics of my successes, a trash can for my failures and an education from all of the above, along with a fire extinguisher. :) I would like to try. It is nice to have a graceful way to back out if things do not work. I have worked with many software adaptations with success. My knowledge of networks is a bit light, but have access to folks with extended knowledge.

If you are not doing anything on the 13th of January 2015 (Tuesday) and don't mind the drive time, come out to Carrollton and see a demonstration of the new video link. If you have a 2.4Ghz node flashed with the latest firmware (v3.0), bring it with you and participate!

Meeting address is the Ryan's Steak House on Hwy 61 just north of the city of Carrollton. Hwy 61 is exit 24 on Interstate 20. Starting time is 7 pm.

For short runs Ubiquiti devices should run fine off of 12v battery voltage.

By short I mean around 25 foot  for what I would personally want to take it to (you can use an Ethernet power drop calculator to see more results, you may be willing to take it further, it is just that is my comfort zone) anything else unless you already have a need for an inverter I would instead suggest a MeanWell DC/DC supply.

the SD-25a-12 ( stable 11-16v out run it at 16v, line loss will be less than battery voltage) or the sd-25a-24 (officially 23-30v out I have seen the adjustment pot let it go lower but  I avoid running out of spec) for those 100ft  or greater lengths (set to 23v -- remember thr boards start frying at 24v at the connector)

If you need several nodes they also come in a 50w version.

I've got my mountain top node running off of one plugged into a (grid charged) 79.2kwh battery bank (obviously the node isn't the only user of the batteries at that size of bank)

They have a wide input range (9-18vdc for the 12v model) meaning your battery will be the first to die (Hint: make sure you have a battery cutoff circuit in place, I've see the 12 to 5v converter take the battery down to 4.9v once)
