Topic : Reconfiguring a Polycom IP 601 SIP phone for Broadband-Hamnet use

I have 4 Polycom 501 phones and the menus are very similar if not exactly the same. My bootrom revision is 4.1.0.0219 and the SIP is 3.0.1.6032.

Do I really have to upgrade the SIP or will it just run as it is?

I have 2 hamnets setup with a phone plugged into each one but they seem to be just continually booting in circles?

I'm very new to broadband hamnet, and haven't even tried flashing a device yet.

However, you might be able to rope me in.

For an internet-enabled mesh system, you will need to plug an Ethernet cord from your home router into the WAN port (more than likely labeled "Internet") of one of your mesh nodes. Next, you need to login to that node, click on setup, enter the username and password, click on the check box labeled "Mesh Gateway," and then reboot that mesh node. Only one node needs this in the mesh network in order to get internet to all devices plugged into the mesh network.

Appreciate the help Smile

Need to ask for some more.

I cannot get the fake-hwclock to install.

With the windows computer normally connected by wifi, internet access is OK.

With the PC connected to the mesh network so that I can talk to the Rpi I can not get access to the internet, and thus the fake HWclock times out.

I have tried to connect my mesh network to the internet, but still do not get access to the www.

If you could give me some pointers to get over this hurdle it would be great.

Topic : LAN IP Mapping?

Wont work... Trust me, been there.

My LAN used to be in the 10.27.X.X subnet.

It is now in the 192.168.X.X subnet BECAUSE the mesh WLAN IPs are in the 10.X.X.X and I couldnt route them with the gear that I had (commercial, not Cisco or higher-priced stuff).

To make my LAN talk to/be available from the mesh, I had to change my LAN to something other than 10.x.x.x (setting the gateway for 10.x.x.x was the hard part until I moved it all).

If you have Cisco/industrial gear that can be set to route properly, post it for others to use .

Then I'd go with the JTAG route.

There are two I use. The first link is of the USB model (which is tons faster than the parallel port version), and the second one is the parallel port version I use if all else fails. Both gadgets do come with jumper cable.

As for the WRT54G2, at the time of writing this, the only supported devices are the WRT54G & WRT54GS v1-4 and WRT54GL's. If you can get it to work though, all the better!

Topic : Hello - Woodbridge

Hi Everyone,

Located in Woodbridge (27 & Rutherford) and getting into HSMM.  Sniffed around and no surprise that there are no other nodes in range.  If anyone is interested, nearby and looking to try and connect then please send me a note.  Still finishing the outdoor box so not permanently on the air yet.

I suspect many power up, see no one in range and move on to other challenges.  If we can all post our location and availability, then there may eventually be enough users to actually start the elusive mesh - or at least a bunch of point to point hops to link a couple of separated clusters together!

I wasn't able to get the shorting method to work, but I will try it again. However, that's why I was thinking I'd have to go the JTAG route. As a side question a WRT54G2 isn't going to work with this is it?

Topic : LAN IP Mapping?

Hi -- I'm just starting to play with HamnetBroadband and was wondering what the structure is for assigning subnets to the LAN ports on a node.  I've configured two nodes so far (I"m planning to do five in all), and it seems there's some method of selecting the subnet, and I'm curious what that is.

Also, do I break anything (like interoperation with other nodes) if I use my own subnets for the LANs?  I already have a network plan mapped out in the 10.0.0.0 range that I use for all my other systems, and would prefer to use subnets in that space if it doesn't cause problems.  I'm aware of the possibility of address overlap which I can deal with if neccesary.

Thanks, 73, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Just getting started in HSMM-MESH.Have a Linksys WRT54GS Ver 2 already reflashed into a MESH node. Will be getting another shortly so that I can put up another node and experiment with my MESH. Here's a couple questions I need answered. 1) The Linksys router needs 12VDC at 1 amp for power. If I run this from my Ham Radio power supply (13.6VDC), or a battery (also over 12VDC), will it smoke the router? I instend to run the one in my shack off the power supply, and the other node will be a remote with battery power. When I get the MESH up and running, I'm sure I will have more questions. 73 and thanks.

You should not have manually start asterisk. I take mine to demos where no internet connection is present and it works perfectly every time. I installed the fake hardware clock and properly shutdown the RPi after every use.

Is your RPi connected to an internet-enabled mesh? The asterisk server starts automatically after a script set the internal clock to the correct time. If no internet connection is present, the script does not move on to starting asterisk (like an if-then statement).

So there are four ways to go about fixing this:

  1. have an internet-enabled mesh system,
  2. take a look at this documentation,
  3. add a new file to the /etc/init.d/ directory that starts asterisk, or
  4. continue doing what you are doing.

I now have a working PBX with the Cisco SPA502G over the HSMM-MESH. Laughing

I got 4 surplus phones of a local web site.

Even though they were brand new I had to do a factory reset to get access to the setup menus.

What I have noticed that I have to restart the Asterisk server via putty after each power down, is there something else I should be doing ?

Hi Guy´s

Ron was right, it was switched to a static address, I have switched to DHCP and bingo shows up on my nodes, so now I have full access and my testing is ongoing.

It was the cheapest 12V monitor I could find it also has two switchable relays which also means some good options.

It has the option to send emails when items reach a certain threshold  which I like.

Topic : My home mesh node

Here is the setup that I'm using at the apartment that I rent in a residential neighborhood on the Pawtucket / Providence city line. I'm on great terms with the landlord so he doesn't mind me mounting a few small antennas on the side of the house. It is very unobtrusive and can be barely be noticed from the street. In the spring I would like to move the antennas a little higher up to the peak of the roof to get a better line of sight. I may also install a second unit on the north side to get coverage in that direction. The two attached photos were taken during installation.

The WRT54G hardware ver. 2 is running the new v1.0.0 firmware and is connected to a Linksys antenna stand with TNC connectors model AS2TNC which has a cable about 6' long. The stand is mounted outside next to a window frame on the second floor with the cable running inside to the WRT. The omni antenna is 16" long and claims to be 9 dBi gain. Similar antennas can be purchased on eBay for about $3.79 each with free shipping. The flat panel is a TRENDnet TEW-AO14D with a claimed 14 dBi gain. I've seen them sell for about $50 - $60 new. The coverage pattern is about 30 degrees and the antenna is designed for outdoor use. The omni will only cover east through south to west as the building blocks the signal to the north. The flat panel is aimed south towards my other node hosted at Ladd Observatory. There is a second WRT54G node in my basement which connects the MESH wireless network to my Sun Netra server.

Yes, I converted all three of my nodes to v1 and I'm recommending that others in RI do the same. Let us know if you are going to be in the Providence area and we can make plans to meet with you.

Hello,

I just got my first BBHN Node (WRT54GS v2.1) the other day.  I've got it all set-up and ready to go.  I'm thinking about taking it on a road-trip up and around Providence.  Has anyone in the Providence area upgraded their firmwares to v1.0.0?

My home QTH is in Preston, CT [FN41an].  So far only one other station in CT is on BBHN and he is all the way down in New Haven.

We are going to have a meeting to discuss the RI mesh project on Sat. Nov. 30 from about 1-3 pm at the Ladd Observatory on college hill in Providence. Click for directions and map. We'll be listening on the 145.350 repeater, 67.0 tone for access. Contact Myrton N1GKE or Mike W9GYR for details.

Newcomers are most welcome. Bring a Linksys and we'll flash the firmware for you. We'll also be discussing deployment of new nodes and planning some reception tests.

Hi, Glen;

The address you quoted, 192.168.1.2, is the default static admin address for the Teracom device. Connect to it directly with a cross-over cable, and using the admin page, change the IP configuration to DHCP. Then, when you connect it to the BBHN node, it'll be given an address in the 10.x.x.x range, and you'll be able to connect to it over the node's lan. It's new address should be visible on one of the node's setup pages. It should pop up on the 'dhcp leases' section of the nat/port forwarding page, but sometimes that's slow to appear for some reason. You can do a dhcp reservation and advertised service to make future connections across nodes more convenient.

I'm new at all this networking stuff too. Playing with BBHN has been a quick education for me.

And thanks for the link to Teracom; I've been looking for that device for a while. I haven't been able to find an inexpensive environmental monitor till now, and at less than $100 CDN this fits the bill quite nicely.

Are you running the current BBHN firmware version 1.0.0?

The 192.168.x.x IP address sounds like your router is in NAT mode.

Check LAN under the basic setup page and see if it says NAT or "5 host direct."  I think 5 Host Direct is the new default.

If you're in NAT mode, devices plugged into your router are not "visible" to other nodes unless you do port forwarding or other configuration.

If you use direct mode, your devices will be visible to all nodes.

If you use direct mode, you should get a 10.x.x.x IP address for the devices.

I'm not part of the development team, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm also easily confused.
