Topic : WRT150N - HELP!!!

Some wireless N (802.11n) devices may work on both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz.

I think the WRT150N is actually 2.4 GHz only in the factory configuration, and doesn't have 5.8 GHz hardware.

In any case, I would expect it to do 2.4 GHz only once BBHN is loaded on it.

What version of the firmware is loaded on your other routers? Are you using the Broadband Hamnet firmware on all of them, or are some of them still using HSMM firmware?  What IP address do you get for the other routers.

Was the IP actually 10.0.0.0, i.e. the last 3 octets were 0?  That's certainly not valid in any case.  10.x.x.x is valid, but they can't all be 0.

We don't have many people who have loaded the WRT150N.  Can anyone who's successfully loaded it post here to confirm it works?

Ok so during my Upgrade process i also got my hands on a Wrt54gl on ebay for cheap .. well it upgraded but during the upgrade it gave me an error of Upgrade failed. and now the unit just gives me like a flash code on the power light.. Now if this is what "Bricked" looks like i would appreciate help with the process of repairing it .. also i though it was a version 3 but it is a version .3 according to the label.. is this model compatible with HSMM Mesh?

Thanks !

Topic : WRT150N - HELP!!!

So I was working on upgrading a few of my routers to HSMM when I noticed that there was a firmware file for the WRT150N. Being in ownership of one of these units I decided to upload the firmware. So it upgraded Fine but now when I try to do the initial Setup where you put your call sign in it gives me an error saying invalid IP address.. the IP address is 10.0.0.0 which I am sure is wrong as it looks differently than my other 3 routers. Now i know that this unit works on the 5ghz band rather than the 2.4 so it wasn't going to work with my existing hardware but can someone with experience help me out? Thanks !

Topic : broadcast / multicast over the MESH

There is an addon to OLSR protocol to allow multicast. And I strongly believe we should make use of it as it will allow talking one-to-many, same way we are used to in radio. However it takes a lot of effort to set it up and I don't think we'll have that soon. On the other hand, you could do VPN (or tunneling) over HSMM. Just make sure your tunnel does not encrypt the traffic. Once you do, you can connect to all your APRS nodes on the mesh and have broadcasts inside the VPN.

Topic : broadcast / multicast over the MESH

Hi,

Is there a way to "broadcast" or "multicast" traffic over the mesh network?

An idea I had was to create a gateway between APRS and HMSS. However, as APRS are basically broadcast-messages, this would mean that you would need to be to flood network over the mesh network.

Is there a way to do this natively inside the MESH protocol (is it possible to encapsulate user data insite the OLSR messages themselves), or should we need to build an application like olsrd itself and run this independantly of the OLSR routing?

Hi, Thanks for your answer. I guess, to put your callsign in the air every 10 minutes, you can just use the olsrd_nameservice plugin to do that or put the callsign in the mac-address of the device. Concering announcing the services, I have not really found out how that is done. I created a test-service on a pi using hsmm-pi but when looking at the OLSR messages send by the node (using wireshark), I did not see anything that reallything addition being broadcasts. Anycase, this seams to correspond with what I tought before. It looks like there isn't that much difference in using BH or just native openwrt + olsr + plugins. Thanks for your answer. 73 kristoff - ON1ARF

Sorry for the slow response.

I'm not up to date on the deep technical details of that.  I do know several people have figured that out for Ubiquiti and other hardware, but I don't know if they started with the BBHN source or what.

The folks working on Ubiquiti have made an announcement on the main BBHN page or look here: http://hsmm-mesh.org/documentation/179-ubiquiti-support-now-in-beta-test

[IZ5FSA 2013-11-14- 00:40:30]:

When you said: "...OpenWRT, OLSR, and any other pieces..." is there a way to know what's inside the "other pieces" ???

Thanks!

[wx5u 2013-05-08- 17:45:22]:

Disclaimer: I'm not on the development team, so this may not be exactly correct.

I believe Ubiquiti won't talk to HSMM at all due to some of the software components being incompatible.  It's a bug in the open source components used in HSMM.  The processor in the Ubiquiti devices won't run the same software in the WRT-54G and interoperate.

In order to connect a router (or computer) to the current HSMM, you have to load and configure OpenWRT, OLSR, and a few other things.  With the current HSMM software, you CAN connect some other kinds of wifi devices to an HSMM node and communicate.  Because of the software bugs in some of the open source components we use, this fails with Ubiquiti and many other kinds of equipment.   It's a "big endian" problem if that means anything to you.

The Broadband-HamnetV1 should remove or fix these particular bad components.

After that, any sufficiently capable router or network device can connect to Broadband-Hamnet if you can figure out how to load and configure OpenWRT, OLSR, and any other pieces.  Ubiquiti should work, but YOU have to figure out how to do the configuration yourself.  It's not "easy," but a few people have figured out how to do it already.

BBHN  beacons your ham call at least every 10 minutes to meet FCC requirements for station ID.  You need this if you use an amplifier or gain antenna.

I think there are some other usability functions like advertising what services you provide, finding services on other nodes, etc, but I'm not familiar with the details and whether that's part of OLSR or unique to BBHN.

I don't know if there are "deeper" technical functions done by BBHN.  There are a lot of little pieces and configuration things stuffed into BBHN.

I think the bbhn-1.0.0-wrt54gs.bin software may simply install using the TFTP installation process listed lower down in this article: http://hsmm-mesh.org/documentation/68-firmware-installation-instructions.html

Hi,

I tried to load the correct firmware but got an "Upgrade Are Failed" message. Now the Power LED flashes rapidly and I can't ping it! I understand that I now have to connect a JTAG and reload the bootstrap. Is that correct? Lynksys doesn't have the firmware on their website anymore so instead can I load the hamnet software after I re-install the bootstrap?

Thanks for the help,

Paul

Topic : HELP with a WRT54GS V3.0

I've been meaning to write up a set of "unbrick" notes, but it still needs a lot of work.

There are a few things to try that might be easier to try with than JTAG.

Be sure to try the "unplug the power for a day or two" and see if that works.

Here are my notes so far.

Unbrick with TFTP – Install with TFTP...

http://hsmm-mesh.org/documentation/68-firmware-installation-instructions.html

Reset password with failsafe mode.

http://hsmm-mesh.org/documentation/71-using-safe-mode-to-reset-a-forgotten-password.html

What to do if your router doesn't work ("bricked") or you forget the password

There are several techniques to recover from a lost password on your router.

There are also techniques to recover a "bricked" router.  i.e., you flashed your router and it doesn't work now.  It's a "brick."

Step 1 – Be sure it's really broken

After you flash a router, IP addresses change.  Your PC may not be "talking" to the correct IP address.   Your router may be working fine, but your PC just isn't connecting.

Some things to try.

Power the router off and on.  Normally, a few seconds will do, but it's been reported that, sometimes, powering off overnight or longer will fix a router that appears to be bricked.
Unplug and replug the ethernet cable.
Turn the network off and on in your PC.
Reboot the PC.
Manually tinker with the network configuration.
Be sure you know how to put it back to "normal."
Try to connect to it from the WAN port
Plug the WAN port of the broken router into a working network that provides DHCP, for instance, into a LAN port of another router.
Look at the DHCP status of the working router to see if another DHCP lease shows up.  For instance, the Setup->Port Forwarding/DHCP and Services page at localnode:8080/cgi-bin/ports on another Broadband/Hamnet router.
Connect to that node with your browser, for instance, as 10.56.118.23:8080

Resetting passwords on a working router

Plug your PC into a LAN port on the router.  Connect to localnode:8080.  You should get a web page.  Try the "setup" button, and you should get a password prompt.  The userid is root.  The default password is "hsmm."

Hello all, my name is Howard, AC4FS, from Palm Coast, FL.  I recently started to play around with Broadband-Hamnet.  I have a two node mesh network running in my house right now, and plan on adding a WiFi node to the mix.

Node 1 has a Raspberry Pi IRC server connected to it, and Node 2 has an Internet gateway connection to my main home network switch.  So far all I'm doing is experimenting, but next year I plan on making two or three portable, amplified nodes for field use.

I'd like to discuss this with any of the local Volusia-Flagler hams that still have mesh nodes.

Johan,

I sent you an email. Would be nice to see some of the mesh networks linked. Just not enough people interested in the local area. Unfortunately most around here are too busy talking about getting a D-Star repeater. I have a lead on some 900mhz radio's, I may try to find a way to bring a packet bridge to expand the network a bit.

[SM7I 2013-08-12- 06:14:36]:

This is a non-issue with my solution. Please feel free to drop me an email and you will get detailed instructions on how to do.

At the same time I would like to try and establish tunneling between SM7 and anyone in the US. Are there anyone up for this ?

This is off the top of my head, but isn't there a way in the firmware to define an antenna as Tx only? What if you put an amp only on your Tx antenna? THat should boost your output without the negitive effect of also boosting the noise floor on your RX. I'd like to try this: Parabolics with amps for Tx Omni w/out amp for Rx of the para and Tx for local area coverage (so Tx/Rx on the omni)

Well, it took a bit of reading and messing about, but I am posting this to the forum via mesh! I set up a single node several days ago, and a second node today for experimenting with connectivity. First test once they were both up was a DD-WRT WiFi access point connected to the second node, from which I could then access both mesh nodes. Now in the interest of further testing I've temporarily connected my original node to the Internet. Assuming I can still click "Submit" it seems to be working well.

Now on to getting some decent antennas set up!

Ciao Mariano. Ciao.
