HELP with a WRT54GS V3.0
Hi, I tried to load the correct firmware but got an "Upgrade Are Failed" message. Now the Power LED flashes rapidly and I can't ping it! I understand that I now have to connect a JTAG and reload the bootstrap. Is that correct? Lynksys doesn't have the firmware on their website anymore so instead can I load the hamnet software after I re-install the bootstrap? Thanks for the help, Paul WB6IWT |

Re-flashing a WRT54GL
Anytime you already have our firmware loaded, use the generic TRX file to reflash/upgrade.
But hang on a second... I just realized that the 1.0.0 by default is in 5-host-direct, and below will only show WAN (just looked at my one node still in 5-host mode) You do not need to port forward when in this mode, as the device is essentially out on the mesh directly with a 10.x.x.x IP. So you wont need to port forward usually, when in this mode. This is equivalent of normal home-routers having the device on the "DMZ".
My mistake, as I am used to working in NAT mode (and usually change all of my nodes from the now-default 5-host-direct back to NAT).
You do not need to reflash, it should just work as is, if you call the 10.x.x.x IP or the name you assign in the DHCP address reservation.

Re-flashing a WRT54GL
I am having a problem when trying to setup port forwarding. When specifying the interface I am not given the option of "WIFI", only "WAN". I have been instructed to reflash the firmware. My question is should I use the .bin or the .trx upgrade file? The router currently has BBHN 1.0 on it and all appears to be working EXCEPT the option for the WIFI interface. |

Is there a writeup somewhere about setting up a basic version of asterisk on a mesh node?
[EDIT]
Never mind.. found it.

Mesh-Node link via Ethernet?
Hi Doug,
I'm still pretty new to OSLR but I did a quick test between a pi running hsmm-pi and a linux box running olsrd.
In /etc/olsrd.conf (or whatever your olsrd configuration file may be) just add your interface on which you want to reach the remote node. This will probably be "eth0", so you should add this:
Interface "eth0"
{
}
You should also make sure the ethernet interface have IP-addresses that match:
E.g.
- on device 1: "44.255.255.1 netmask 255.255.255.252 broadcast 44.255.255.3"
- on device 2: "44.244.244.2 netmask 255.255.255.252 broadcast 44.255.255.3"
As far as I understand the RFC of OLSR, the protocol does support devices with multiple OLSR-interfaces, so it can run on any interface, wireless, wired, .... or even virtual interfaces (like vpn tunnels).
Good luck

Can you post a link or directions on installing/configuring BBHN on a RPi? I had it working a while ago with the old firmware. Sounds like you have it working with the new BBHN firmware v1.0. |

Prove di HSMM-MESH a Scandicci (FI)
Ciao Leo,
I Lynksys li abbiamo acquistati usati tutti su ebay (comunmita' europea, per evitare spese doganali) all'estero pagandoli in media 30 euro sp comprese.

Broadband-Hamnet vs. openwrt+Olsrd
Hi,
I'm still new to HSMM-MESH so please excuse my (perhaps) stupid question: What is the exact functional difference between broadband-hamnet (using a WRT-56G and one of the official software) and -say- setting up a router with openwrt, olsrd + the "olsrd_nameservice" pluging?
I know that the BH-image also provides a webinterface but as I have a background in CLI-based linux system administratie, I don't need that. So, does broadband-hamnet add something else I haven't seen yet? (special kernel-builds, special olsrd versions?)

I am very interested in hearing from others in the area that have or plan to put a node on the air. Currently I have two nodes on the air(KD5CKP-1 & W5OBM-1) at my home. The second is primarily for testing. The intent is that W5OBM-1 goes somewhere else much higher than I can get it here with hopefully a much larger foot print.
I look forward to hearing from the interested parties in the area or anyone with wisdom to share with a new and growing mesh. |

Someone (David, AC0LV) recently posted information about a similar Android app (WalkieTalkie?) under the 'general' forum category. (I didn't discover this until after I posted my original question.) Apparently he managed to get it working over the mesh.
Thanks for the information. I'll try out Serval Mesh, as well as WalkieTalkie.

I found the NW-mesh group that has instructions on how to install the olsrd on ubiquity equipment. Is any one got plans on up daying to the olsrd 0.6.6.1 ? As seen in the Hsmm-pi project?
the NW-mesh group provides a how to on installing olsrd on open wrt.

David, sounds like a port-forwarding issue. Maybe some research into what ports the apps use, and then forward them accordingly. If you are attaching wifi AP's to mesh nodes, the ports would need to be forwarded in both the mesh node AND the AP. One possible scenario: Put the Wifi AP's IP into the DMZ of the mesh node, then have the wifi client (phone) in the DMZ of the AP. That would essentially put the phone directly on the mesh. If you are using the new FW (5-host direct mode by default), then the AP should have been DHCP'd a 10.x.x.x IP, and be on the mesh directly. Then you need to either put the phone into the AP DMZ or figure out the specific ports and have them forwarded in the AP to the phone. Interesting idea you guys are working on, and I would like to see how y'all get this working. 73 KTF

There is an Android application named the Serval Mesh that will allow Android phones to talk and text through a wifi router without any internet connection. I have connected 2 mesh nodes to routers and tried your idea without any success. All this works OK through a single router, but the mesh will not carry the data. I agree that the Androids would be more efficient than VOIP adapters. There may be a simple solution to this and I may be missing something. |

Bill, AC0LV, has already answered my question. See his "WalkieTalkie and Android" post in the 'General' forum section. He has already found an Android App and done 'proof of concept' testing on it. Please consider this thread closed.

I think this is would be very important thing for the mesh to offer in the immediate aftermath of a major disaster, when cellphones and landlines are down. I think it's a killer app if non-ham responders are encouraged to have the WalkieTalkie software pre-loaded into their smartphones. I suspect that it would create a huge demand for hams to set up meshes with hotspots distributed over the disaster area because it allows non-hams to directly make us of the mesh. All responders need to do is get within range of a hotspot, and they can then direct-dial any other responder who is within range of any other hotspot. I would think that the Operations section would keep the hams in the Logistics section busy adding links to the mesh so that they could more easily communicate with personnel everywhere in the response area. Automobile-based, mobile hotspots could accompany teams on missions to provide communications capability among team members even when the automobile is temporarily disconnected from the general mesh. Allowing non-ham responders to use their personal smartphones to communicate sounds like a big win to me. Great idea!
