Topic : Let's build this in the Phila / Southern NJ area

Hi All!  I am very intrested in setting up a number of nodes in the Montgomery County / Bucks area and have a number of sites to setup maybe 4 nodes.  I am also part of Montgomery County Races, and with PEMA (Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency) out of the Eastern District Office that serves 20 county's including Philadlephia, Delaware Co, etc.  I am looking to establish nodes at these locations and hopping that I will be able to get them setup and working.  Also, each of the locations has dedicated internet that we can plug into the nodes so that the Mesh will have access.

Thanks!

Joe-AA3JC.

Thanks Mickey, the light has finally come on!  I actually own one of these routers and don't remember seeing that the 0.4.3 HSMM-MESH software was available for it.  Was it?  Now I'm going to have to add it to my growing collection of Broadband-Hamnet routers.  Don't use it for anything else since I gave up the account for it's AT&T PCMCIA 3G card.  Does the Broadband-Hamnet software connect to the 3G card if it is active?  Not that I'll probably ever reinstate it ever again.

Everything is done on the node. If I get the time tonight I will post my documentation here.

The WRT54G3G is an entirely different router.

Unfortunately, the WRT54G was so successful that Linksys made a whole lot of spinoffs and customized versions with confusingly similar names.

Some are compatible, some are slightly different, some might be compatible, but haven't been figured out yet, some can be used, but require a different process, and some are known to be unusable.

There might be a better way to document this on the web page, but that takes work, and you also run the risk of putting in so many words that it actually makes it more confusing.

[N4TTY 2013-08-07- 12:08:09]:

But I guess I am still confused by the bbhn-1.0.0-wrt54g3g.bin.  What is the "g3g?"  Could it mean model "G" but version 3.0 or greater (i.e. 3.0, 3.1, & 4.0)?  Maybe the text to the right could be updated to be a little more descriptive.

Topic : New Firmware 1.0.0: clarification of behavior

I updated my two devices yesterday and the behavior is as described by those kind enough to post and for the applications I am looking to support, this is a superior configuration. My thanks to the firmware developers as well as the documentation authors (now if I read the documentation more assiduously I would have saved my self half an hour but ... :-) ). I will finish testing and place them into service as well as on the HSMM map. Thanks for everyone's help!!! 73, AB1PH Don Rolph

Topic : Dstar Ops interest in HSMM-Mesh Dstar Net?

Maybe there already is a net, but I was just thinking since the Mesh community is fairly wide spread maybe we could start a Dstar net weekly.  We could meet each other, and create a closer community, share knowledge and learn more about the new firmware, things like that.

If there is interest we could, I'm sure, find a reflector to use and decide on a weeknight and time to meet up.

Anyone have Dstar and some interest in a net for HSMM-MESH/Broadband Hamnet?

I tried to load up the hsmm-pi to my Ubuntu laptop the other day just for the fun of it to see what might happen. Well, first up, this laptop needs a major update on the latest version of Ubuntu (still at 11.10). So I knew I might have a couple of 'minor issues' :) Loaded the software as the directins said and it loaded nicely. Tried to access it from firefox and just got a bunch of error messages and no actual page :( Like I said, I did this for the fun of it and knew I might have issues until I can do a fresh install here. Now to see what I can do with it once I get it loaded to my Pi.

Topic : BBHN Specs for People Developing Other Platform Nodes

Currently this document does not exist.  In fact, a "cookbook recipe" will never exist.  There are far too many considerations needed to cover the various Linux (or whatever) distributions.  All of the complexity that has been removed from using the network has not gone away, it has just been transferred into the software that the routers run, thus making any set of instructions necessarily high level and the details will have to be worked out by the person interested in making any given platform work.

That being said, a set of high level descriptions will be coming at some unspecified time in the future.  However, the firmware is open source and freely downloadable from the svn repository.  Examining the contents of the files that have been laid on top of the stock OpenWRT firmware, and logging in to a running node through ssh, will give the sufficiently motivated person all they need to know to bring some other platform on to the mesh.

Security through obscurity only works when the obscurity is obscure. Hiding the ssid in no way shape or form adds any form of security.

And to be perfectly clear, your link goes to a page with no scroll bar on the right, so you see all the files. While the link on the home page brings up a page with a scroll bar (in my browser anyway) and I somehow overlooked the scroll bar and didn't see the remaining files and all the descriptions to the right of each file.

The light has come on!

I said I was easily confused, but clicking on the link in your reply took me to a different "download page" than the one I came to that created my confusion. I retract my question about which version should be used for what model! Steve G./N4TTY

Mickey I guess I'm easily confused as well, because the bbhn-1.0.0-wrt54g.bin has this in the right column: "firmware for a non-mesh wrt54g and wrt54gl," so I guess that covers all version of the G and GL models. But should I just 'assume' the bbhn-1.0.0-wrt54g3g.bin is for the GS model? The right hand column for that bin file doesn't say anything about a GS model, it just mentions a wrt54g3g, but I'm not clear on what that really means. Confused, Steve G./N4TTY

Isn't it clear from the right column of the Firmware Download Page?

I just my WRT54GS from EBAY. Upgraded it to BBHM v1.0.0. Now I need to find someone to MESH with. My choices are driving up to Providence or down to New Haven. Anyone else in the CT or RI on BBHM??

How do you determine which of the two bin files (bbhn-1.0.0-wrt54g.bin and bbhn-1.0.0-wrt54g3g.bin) to use with each model of the WRT54 as shown in the "Shopping Guide?"  I had it figured out for the 0.4.3 files, but haven't discovered the secret for the bbhn files.

I'm trying to expand the "Simplified shopping list" to include the proper version of the bbhn.bin file with the listed model and version number of the WRT54.

Obviously if the WRT54 is already running 0.4.3 then it is best to just use the 'trx' file.
