Reset router to default password
Well, we have one who says 30/30/30 resets the password, one who says not. Maybe it varies on firmware version or something. I'll leave 30/30/30 as questionable in the writeup until I can do some testing on the final version of bbhn. There are reports 30/30/30 bricks some GS routers, so it's risky anyway.

Per all of our instructions, the default password just after you've done a complete load of the firmware is 'hsmm' -- all lowercase. Except for patches, all of the firmware obliterate FLASH memory so passwords can NOT be kept over a firmware load. |

I don't have a conclusion now because... apparently the password was HSMM all caps? Is that the default?
If so, then either the 30/30/30 worked, or I just imagined changing the password on this node.
I'll never know I guess... |

HamChat Server
I believe that I am experiencing the same issue as KC7NEC.
That is, we can enter our callsign, and then a chat page is displayed. However, typing text into the text box at the bottom of the screen doesn't appear to do anything.
I'm thinking that I may have missed a step.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

As I said before, the password for the web interface is stored in a file in flash memory so, unless you wipe out the flash or overwrite it, your password will stay the same. I was mixed up about only the callsign/nodename. I just checked on the OpenWrt forum website and the 30/30/30 has no effect with OpenWrt. See the article here: https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=34269 It works with DD-WRT but OpenWrt (and the BBHN) firmware is not setup to handle the reset button by default except for the failsafe mode that is discussed in the BBHN User Document for recovering a forgotten password. OK?? |

So, do we have a conclusion whether 30/30/30 should reset the password? I'm trying to make a FAQ about password reset/unbricking.

http://servalpaul.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/smaller-more-elegant-mesh-extender.html Any opinions? I know the Serval Project is going at mesh networking a little differently, but this idea of a router married to a transceiver has merit. The transceiver provides more power and frequency flexibility. How hard would it be to do that here? Thanks.

Thanks! I also have a WRT54G3G-AT, firmware version 2.02.02, that I'm planning to convert. Good to know it worked for you. |

My apologies, I misspoke/mistyped. :)
Just the nodename is stored in NVRAM and we highly recommend
that it contain your callsign. I s'pose I was thinking about
something else that requested just the callsign -- maybe a
much earlier version of the firmware. Sorry. |

Does that mean 30/30/30 can't be used to reset a lost password? What's the distinction between "callsign" and "nodename?" I don't recall ever entering a callsign other than as part of the nodename.
[ae5ae 2013-08-03- 09:59:52]: This is because your callsign is (was, prior to v1.0.0) stored in NVRAM.
The nodename and password are stored in files in flash memory.
The 30/30/30 resets NVRAM but does not do a selective erase on flash,
if it did, how it know what to wipe out??? :) |

OK really weird. its a WRT54GS v4. 30/30/30 reset worked ostensibly.
That is, HSMM firmware is set back to NOCALL and shows initial setup screen. However when I hit SETUP and enter u: root / p: hsmm it fails. How is that possible?? |

Raspberry Pi and Alfa 1 watt wireless USB up and running
Got my AWUS036NH 2 watt unit and it is recognized immediately by KK6DCI's package (and probably by GM8PBQ's package but I haven't tested). I see my three Linksys nodes, but still waiting to detect a neighbor's signal! EDIT: flash my three Linksys routers to 1.0.0 bbhn. I'm looking foreword to KK6DCI updating his install to bbhn!

Here's the 30/30/30 reset warning I found:
"Note: WRT54GS v1.1, GS v2, and GS2.1 models can brick after a hard reset no matter how it is done." From the DD-WRT "Peacock" thread.

Some further info here:
BTW, there is a "30/30/30 reset," but I think I've heard that can brick some routers, so try other solutions first. Edit: found the links to 30/30/30 reset problems. The DD-WRT "Peacock" thread.
Further DD-WRT info on 30/30/30 "bricking". The warning is "Note: WRT54GS v1.1, GS v2, and GS2.1 models can brick after a hard reset no matter how it is done." BTW, the DD-WRT "Peacock" thread has lots of good info, some of which is relevant to our stuff. The same can be said for the who DD-WRT forum.

If you forgot the SSH login and the http login, follow the steps in the link below to telnet into the node. From there, type mount_root and then take a look at the /etc/httpd.conf file (cat /etc/httpd.conf). Alternatively, you could TFTP or jtag the firmware back to the router or do some combination of the two.

I have run into this myself though I eventually remembered the password.
I figured the MESH firmware would following the solution the OEM did, but it doesn't
So is there solution using the RESET button out there, or is the only way to fix via a TFTP re-flash? |
