HamChat Server
Two of us in our group have tried the HamChat install on two separate v1.0.0 nodes following the detailed install instructions with poor results. All users see the HamChat page requesting the login; but after logging in, anything typed in the text entry box is lost on pressing SEND and does not appear in the chat portion of the screen.
During the install I did yesterday, I made sure I created the folders and used the chmod command exactly as in the instructions (using PuTTY). I did use WinSCP to transfer the two files and to verify the permissions on the files and folders after the install.
After attempting to send several lines of text, I checked the DATA folder with WinSCP and found it empty.
Any suggestions? 73 |

Setting up a city wide network. Logistics to consider?
My local ARES group will be setting up nodes around the city. Eventually covering it. We are in the talking stage to several local businesses that have some of the highest buildings in town. Also the hills [we're in a 2000 ft deep valley].
Our first deployments will probably be either in or next to where local repeaters are and use 2 directional antenna. One aimed in town at a particular quadrant. One aimed at the next node on the parimiter. In town, various hams will have omni directional antenna/node mounted at their home. I'm wondering if using a second antenna aimed at low coverage areas would be advantagious.
What issues or problems have others had that we might want to learn about in the planning stages rather later after a couple nodes are up in hard to get to places? Anything in regards from antenna polarization to cable length to software to remote node firmware upgrade, anything at all i'll listen to and read up on and take back to my group. I'd rather have a lot of small tips that were good then one large pile of mesh mess. Thanks. |

HSMM-MESH on Raspberry PI
I thought I'd posted there messages here, but obviously not!
The lower part (blue) is the original post, the upper bit (black) is an update.
I've uploaded an updated version of my HSMM-MESH system for the PI. The main changes are:
Fixed bug that interfered with setting firewall rules.
Renamed LAN port from eth0 to lan, and WAN port from eth0.1 to wan, to simplify configuring a system with the ethernet port used for a WAN link and a second wifi or ethernet dongle as LAN port.
Fixed some fields on status page.
Sets the linux hostname to the mesh Node Name.
The system sets the password for user pi to pi, and the root password to the value set in the setup screen.
Note this creates a Mesh node compatible with Mesh Verson 0.4.3. I will be producing one to work with the new release soon.

As there seems to be quite a bit of interest, I've put together some preliminary installation instructions. More technical info, build detaill, etc will follow.
Check that you have folders lib, proc, sys, dev, etc, bin, files, OpenWRTFiles, PIFiles. I've sometimes had problems with winzip not creating empty folders.
Open the boot partition of the SD card, and copy all the files and folders from meshautoconf0.4.3 into it.
Unmount the SD card, install in PI, and power up, If you have a monitor it is worth connecting it so you can see what is going on.
The PI should boot 3 times. The first time it uses the boot partition as the root partition, and copies a few files to the main partition on the PI. This takes a few seconds. The second time it uses the rc.local file just installed to install some packages (from the boot partition, so no internet is needed). and configure the node. This can take several minutes. It then boots again to activate the MESH configuration.
The files are set up to work the same as a WRT54 node - the LAN port is configured as 172.27.0.1, with DHCP enabled - so you can connect a PC and configire the node in the usual way (web browser to localnode:8080). Sometimes I've found the PC doesnt get an IP address the first time. If this happens, rebooting the PI should fix it.
I've found it easier to configure the LAN port with an address on my LAN, so I don't have to unplug the PC and connect it to the PI. You can edit file "interfaces" to set an address on your LAN instead of the 172.27 address. If you do this, remember to set the same address when you configure the Node. or you will loose access. You'll need to connect to the IP address:8080 to configure.
73,
John

You say that node 1 laptop with camera is 10.16.30.18 and you say that node 2 laptop with camera is 10.16.30.30.
Are you sure you set it up this way ?
This will not work.
If you have two clients with the same networksubnet, but behind different routers there will be no routing since the IP and mask on each of the laptops will search their local network and never go through the router.
This is why the packages will never go through the router, just as you write.
You need to have different subnets on each of your routers LAN sides. |

Port Forwarding in v1.0.0
This does not work as described for me:
node1 WiFI is x.x.x.x
node1 LAN is 10.16.30.17
node1 user ron-laptop is 10.16.30.18 running a webcam on port:8081
node2 WiFi is x.x.x.x
node2 LAN is 10.30.25
node2 user laptop is 10.16.30.30 running a webcam on port:8081
from the "Mesh Status" page I can click the link and view the webcam, that works fine. However, if I ping laptop on node2 from ron-laptop on node1 I resolve the name to the proper IP, but no packets are being passed through the router. The same happens in the reverse.
The webserver that serves all my webcams looks for the local-lan names and tries to serve the streams. No packets are being routed through.
How can I get around this on v1.0.0?
I cannot ping any LOCAL LAN IP address on any other node from any other node. |

The only thing to "configure" with MIRC is to tell it the IP address of the node running the IRC server along with the channel/room in order to make a connection. The channel #mesh is always present on the server. I would suggest you visit the website www.mirc.com where you can learn all about MIRC.

Raspberry Pi/Gumstix
Hi W8ISS, I have been developing the HSMM-Pi project on a Ubuntu 12.04 VM without any problems. The Ubuntu 11.10 release is a couple years old. I suggest testing with Ubuntu 12.04; or, even better, put is a Raspberry Pi and let me know how it goes :)

Help with node bridge
Unless you were running 0.3.3, I'm doubtful that could have worked. Are you sure they weren't actually bridging by wireless?
I did some digging in SVN, and what changed in 0.3.3 was that a checkbox was added, resulting in "eth0.0" being added to the interface declaration in the oslrd.conf file if checked. However, this setting was commented out in 0.4.0 with the note "disable for now" and has been hidden ever since. It sure would be helpful if the maintainers would chime in and explain why the setting was removed. If we understood, maybe we could help fix it.
[VA3WPN 2013-05-23- 12:04:13]: I have had mine bridge by simply plugging it into the master node then adding power. Have you tried that?? |

MESH node started in Broward County
I jumped in my car one night last week and drove to the John Knox site, as I was told there was a node up on there. I had no trouble pinging the Gold Coast club's wi-fi node without an external antenna from the west side of I-95, but with an external antenna, I couldn't even find the MESH node. Then again, I did update all my routers with the V.1 BBHN firmware before heading over there!!
Is there anyone between Davie and me in Western Tamarac that has a node up which I might be able to hit? I do have a Someone in Plantation which who I'm thinking might be persuaded to put a node up at his place..
I am going to be setting up a Raspberry Pi on Asterisk and get a PBX line working by this weekend, as well I plan to make some changes to my node to increase it's output signal and perhaps raise the elevation a few more feet. If the 14dbi rootenna doesn't seem to be enough, I am planning to switch it out with a 30dbi directional and maybe try to find a secondary site on some elevation near me for the rootenna set-up..

VPN on HSMM?
We are doing some really neat stuff on mesh, not just building a network without a use. We are actually running ATV and voice on our mesh. I will be starting a net soon. I will post my IP Address for those who may want to VPN into us. I have been told now how to do it. I have not tried it yet |

There are a couple of us who also have nodes up in Broward -- Tony KK4GUU and myself. There's also a node up on the John Knox Village tower, although I've had mixed results hitting that one even when nearby. |

Thanks for the information, Do I have to configure the MIRC to be able to communicate? Or as soon you connect your router and start the MIRC works properly.
Any settings on the MIRC?

Thanks for the Info;
I'm getting there, hi hi. A friend of mine Has the older firmware installed and told me to use the software named MIRC to do data, keyboard to keyboard. My question is MIRC works with the new firmware 1.0? Do you know any software that works with the new firmware? any help will be appreciated.
God Bless!

The new 1.0.0 firmware uses routing by default, ie you don´t have to do any NAT or portforwarding in order to reach LAN side resources from other nodes. Just make sure the routing works by simply send a ping from one LAN side resource to another LAN side resource and if that works you will have traffic flow. |

What is your app? And why do you need port forwarding when you can directly access everything on your node's LAN?
