Hi Doug;

Thanks for the info do you mean to upload the file bbhn-1.0.0-brcm.trx on my WRT54G that has the previous version.

God Bless!

Topic : New Firmware 1.0.0: clarification of behavior

[AB1PH 2013-08-05- 08:21:18]:

Some questions come to mind.

First, in our initial configuration, we are not attaching to the internet.  Therefore there is no DNS structure in place.  So it is unclear how we must get "DNS working".  Thoughts?

Even though you're not attaching to the Internet there is still a DNS "structure" for the nodes on mesh.
But I think what's being referred to is DNS on your PC, especially if you have multiple network connections.  Reference?

Second: what exactly is 5 direct?

5-hosts in DMZ mode.  It was felt that 'direct' was a more "appropriate" naming for this mode.
This was available in previous versions in place of NAT mode but now it's the default.

Third:  since we are creating dynamically assigned mesh structured, what happens with the 5 DIRECT algorithm when two previously independent meshes now get a bridging node which connects them?  I could understand the behavior with NAT, but adding additional directly addressable nodes seems to have complicated this dynamic reconfiguration significantly.

Nothing happens to the algorithm.  In DMZ/Direct mode, which has been available for quite a few revisions of the firmware, the hosts on a node's LAN are given 10.0.0.0/8 IP addresses based upon the IP of the node's WiFi address.  Are you truly expecting IP address collisions?  Worst case you can go to the setup page and tweak the WiFi IP address and remove the collision.  Tis no more complicated than adding a similar number of nodes.

Any help would be appreciated!

Does this help, Don?

Ok, I am reading the release material.  It looks like the connection to the node are now "5 direct" and that forwarding rules as are required with the NAT approach is not required.

It also says that DNS needs to be working.

That worked for me.  The install went fine.  Then just had to watch for the light to flash like it tells you to.  Piece of cake

[wx5u 2013-08-05- 03:59:02]:

By the way, if you have a working internet connection on an existing HSMM-Mesh 0.4.x router, you can upgrade it to Broadband Hamnet from the administration page on the mesh node itself.  You don't need to go to the software download page and download the files to your PC.

Refresh the firmware download list and "bbhn-1.0.0-brcm.trx" will be on the list.

Can't quite figure out what I'm doing wrong here.  It's been a while since I used telnet to get into a node and I'm lost.  I do seem to remember something about a different port number (2222), but can't seem to get the combination correct.

Any help appreciated!

you need to use the file with the .TRX suffix to upgrade existing MESH firmware

.BIN files are for model specific updating of OEM firmware. Once MESH firmware is on the node, then use the .TRX file

Topic : irc (20.2) and new V1 of Broadband-HAMNET

Just upgraded my mesh nodes to the V1 Broadband-HAMNET.  All seems to have gone without a hitch.  Great job guys!!

My current issue is when installing the 20.2 version of irc, under 'Port Forwarding' when 'POPPING HOLES IN THE FIREWALL' I don't get a choice of 'WiFi' in the pulldown for 'Interface', just WAN.  No 'WiFi' to select.

Any ideas?

Hi there;

Just started on my first Linksys Router (WRT54g V3) and installed the previous firmware, Now tried to upgrade but had problem to upload the new firmware file bbhn-1.0.0-wrt54g.bin at administration menu and gave me this error message." Firmware cannot be updated the upload file is not recognized"

The current version installed is 0.4.3, any clue about how to fix the problem.

God Bless!

Thanks for the reply. I had used chmod to set the permissions on the two files after I copied them. I'll check them again. 73 de Mike

I believe that I am experiencing the same issue as KC7NEC. That is, we can enter our callsign, and then a chat page is displayed. However, typing text into the text box at the bottom of the screen doesn't appear to do anything. I'm thinking that I may have missed a step. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks. -Mike

I'm not part of the development team, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm also easily confused.

As always, corrections welcome.  I'm not part of the development team.

There is some practical discussion of installs of v1.0.0 beta on the Beta 1.0 firmware forum.

In theory, there's no advantage to going back to factory firmware.  Just install the .trx file if you have a router with a 0.4.x version of hsmm.

The only difference between .trx and .bin is a few bytes of header info that convinces the factory firmware the firmware is legitimate and lets it load.  After install of either one, the state of the router should be the same.

Ubiquiti "support":

You will have to figure out how to load OpenWRT on the Ubiquiti and configure it yourself.   This is not an easy task.

Once you do that, appropriate Ubiquiti or other types of hardware should be able to join a mesh network.  The important change is that BBHN no longer uses the olsrd secure plugin, so it will connect to any  properly configured wifi device.

When I say "it's not an easy task," I am making an understatement.  The is no precompiled, preconfigured image to load.  The hsmm-bbhn aware web interface will not be there on your Ubiquiti node.  You'll have to figure out the OLSR setup.  You'll have to manually do a lot of the stuff such as IP addresses that the hsmm mesh/BBHN system does automatically on the WRT54G routers.  Plus several other cryptic and non-obvious details the BBHN package does for you.

BTW, I have not configured a Ubiquiti device to BBHN, and would probably have to work at it for a LONG time with lots of help to do so.

[KM2O 2013-08-05- 01:51:50]:

I am a bit confused as to the best way to upgrade to 1.0.0.  Would it be easier to reset the router to factory default and use the model specific flash file or use the upgrade file which has a different file extension?  I would be doing it from Windows.  Also does 1.0.0 now support Ubiquity or is that still to come?

In any event thanks for all the hard work!

I discovered a problem when I tried to install nano on a node and the install reports no space on /. I also tried to install joe with the same results. The node status page shows free space as flash = 584K /tmp = 7064KB memory = 3480KB. df -h through ssh reports free space as 6.9M on /tmp, 584K on /jffs, and 0 on /. I have verified the same results on a WRT54G v1.1, a WRT54GS v2.0, a WRT54G v3.0, a wrt54G v4.0, and a WRT54GS v2. All with the same basic results, just slightly different numbers due to the differences in memory. I verified the behavior in patching up through 271 after an initial 269 flash and a direct flash to v1.0.0, and both before and after power cycling after the upgrades.

What filename should we be looking for on the Software Download page? I can't find anything relative to 1.0.0.  Am I looking in the right spot?!
